Cal on Gettable:

Reid - has given no indication on what he wants to do end of year, either stay or go so has to make a decision The feel in Vic is that he will stay at least until the end of next year but until he does something, it's always in play.
Rowell - Still likely to stay, the feel is from Vic clubs will be that he stays at GC for 2 years, but still weighing up the decision. Cal thinks if still unsigned in 2 weeks, then alarm bells should be going off at GC.
Bergman - We're one of many clubs with interest in him
Butters - will not move this year and clubs will come for him next year, has a bigger deal then Pickett's on the table from Port but he hasn't taken it
Worpel - will likely find out once Rowell has made a decision as most clubs will prioritize Matt first.

He'd the be the first player the club would part with if it got to that point. I see him as a player who "might" develop but one who is also surplus to our needs in the short to medium term.

Put it this way. Have we even talked about the fact he's not been in the side the last month? No. So I agree 100% that if it came to trading players he'd be packaged up with a nice pink ribbon and escorted to the front gates.

If we have a reasonably fit list to choose from I think he's a long way back in the pecking order. In fact I'll go a step further and say that if he plays again this season or is even close to being considered come finals, then we have bigger problems at play.
In the same way the club has done previously, Clark may be used strategically to rest others towards the back end of the season and also hopefully in a way which may drive up his perceived value to another club's needs (see Esava)

I mean at this point.... if we dont get anyone fitting the GFC terms to come here with a reasonalbe deal, I think we are in the position to push till next year and consolidate what we have.

Its purely a position to be in on the basis IMO of having shot the eyes out of the diamond in the rough stuff on our list ( not sayin they are of no value - far from it - just that we'vee basically paid SFA for 10 -13 players on our list that play best 23 roles and cist us zlich for it.

Thus we can take big name players in BUT if they dont fit the parameters of what we do ( say Reid wanting 10 @ 1.5 per year) then we consolidate and look to the following year.

The Saints need to land a fish. If we do great.... if not, not biggie and move on.

GO Catters

Players Linked:
  • Butters (2026)
  • Reid (2026)
  • Cadman (2026)
Rowell – A strong fit for our needs. Worth keeping an eye on, but I suspect he stays put.

Worpel – A cheaper fallback if Rowell isn’t available, or chooses another club.

Reilly O’Brien (ROB) – A budget-friendly stopgap if Stanley retires. Solid enough for a two-year role if Conway and Edwards aren’t ready, even if he doesn’t fit our usual ruck profile.

Rowan Marshall – Similar timeline to ROB, but more likely to appeal to Chris Scott. Would cost more, though.

Luke Jackson – Highly unlikely. Freo won’t trade, and I doubt we’d pay the salary and picks needed for a ruck. That said, if there is any ruck that will make the GFC break that mold, it’s him.

Miles Bergman – A really solid player who would improve us, but the asking price feels steep for what he offers to a side.

JUH/Clayton Oliver – Both come with baggage. Not worth the drama unless the club truly believes it can make it work

Neil Erasmus - Inconsequential at the end of the day. If the club thinks they can turn him into a player, then more power to them. Not exactly one that wets the appetite, but they're occasionally the best stories, too.

Bloody awesome cats_09..... and as a Cats supporter how can't we not be in love with this club when they keep making one great decision after another!

I know we've discussed it, but here's the clip of Mitch talking about our salary cap

I don't use twitter myself but the melts are absoloutley hilarious. The cognitive dissonance that Geelong being good causes the nuffy level people over there truly warms my heart

I just love how we apparently played the long game with Smith and started orchestrating his recruitment prior his Cotton On sponsorship and had a hand in their sponsorship of him 😂

Oliver? Would need to be fire sale conditions.

I watched the FFurnace with JimmyB and Hird talk about Melb players turning into play and how it contributed to Melbs dump kicking style. Im surprised that there has not been more said on it. After nearly recruiting him , and watching him this year, Oliver seems to just bang the ball so often and ignore better options, Im not convinced he would be a great fit. Could he be retrained to hit short options or handpass? CScott said he has been surprised how quickly BazS has fitted into our play.. and although he does tend be a mixed bag with dispossal he has also hit up players well. The pass to Neale last week for example. I dont know if Oliver would have the same success… and yes it would have to be a fire sale.

To me the obvious one with luggage who might be able to be picked up cheapish if we wanted that risk has to be JUH..

Im not convinced id want either.
