VFL Carlton Reserves 2025

Cowan in the midfield just makes sense. Been saying it since he played there early in the VFL season in 2024. Would add some real burst speed to our mix and he's fantastic defensively.

Not a fantastic kick but he is penetrating which would suit a midfield role too.

For me another reason to target some half back options like Florent in the off season, would allow a player like Cowan to push up the field knowing that spot down back is covered.

Carroll Wilson Charleson Ollie all running defender options. I'd play Jagga off HB in his first year at times. Weitering, Silvagni, HOF, Newman as pillars. Can Boyd reach his potential? We have some talent and will add Dean at years end

Flynn Young looks a modern day HB to me. That run and raking Left foot aff HB would be a weapon

Love to see Cowan on a wing or even the middle. Tough, some pace and can kick it long to advantage
Add Cowan as well. I think we were planning on playing Newman on the ball this year? Jagga off half back I think makes sence but as a high half forward who goes into the middle or wing would be dynamite if he can nail that down. Could Saad have a rejuvination next season?

Our defence has some real strong points. I think we need to start seeing which defenders can play wing. Cowan? Carroll? I have always wanted Kemp there but I do like him as a third tall forward. It's BS that we haven't had the opportunity to develop that this season.

We need to sort out our wings, onball group and get some real forwards in still.

It's been a hell of a hit this season without most of our best 8 forward. Curnow, McKay, E Hollands, Kemp, Cottrell, Williams, Motlop and Smith would have been 8 players who would have played in our best 22 this season and most have spent far too much time missing or not fit. Motlop probably the only consistently available and fit player. Out of those 8, I expect that all other forwards will be gone in two years time apart from Moir. White and Young may be given more time but the rest need to be replaced. Durdin shows flashes but really they are not flash.

Get those 8 up and going next season. Allow the natural progression of our backline. And do something about the lack of ability to chase, run down, carry the footy and connect with the defence from our midfield and we get back into the 8.

Our list is not that bad. We have had some poor list direction, put together a poor forward line and a very out of date, slow, immobile midfield. We need to fix that.

I think we can be back in finals next season and begin our mini rebuild from the top half of the ladder. I just hope that we don't blow the list up like every second person on here thinks we should.

Get the forward line fit, fix the midfield and we can push top 4.

Our Football Dept is administratively inept our coaches are tactically inept our list has been drilled and instructed poorly and are now dispirited and disinterested - contributing to poor skills and effort.

The fix can be quickish - but we can’t afford to make any more errors on key appointments.

Slow, limited physical presence against AFL bodies, doesn't keep up with the pace of the action when stepping up.

Worse than S.Durdin, so I'm more excited to see Grainger-Barass in a third forward, third defender role.
DGB looked good in the highlights.

Amazing how the general consensus on here not that long ago was that Power was no good, and will be one of the post-season causalities. All it took was one VFL game to launch him into senior coach discussions
Power is OK. Not sure I would attribute the upturn in development to him.
I believe our recruiting of some late and rookie picks if late has been first class. Tom Lonergan from the Cats and Brad Ebert from Eagles successful period and Port have been pivotal over the last couple of seasons along with Torin Baker.

Ebert is Head of Development and Lonergan’s title is Development and Talent Manager. Baker is simply a Development Coach. Power’s official title is simply VFL Senior Coach.

The question becomes the amount of cross over with the AFL and VFL boys, which will speak to how much influence Power does or doesn’t have.

I’ve always rated Power as a coach. I met him about when he first came to Carlton around 2019, and he is an incredible bloke. Very relatable, respectful, and giving of his time. Was highly respected when he worked for the AFL academy as well

All aboard “the Power train”….agreed it’s comical…as is the concept that the reserves are trained to play any differently from the league side. The only (big) difference is the game is played at a much lower intensity allowing players more time to execute their skills.

He’s barely had anywhere close to a strong compliment list of available players for any period of time to help develop players and game plan in his role at the club…

It is not 1 game, it is the teams performance over the last 6-8 games where despite a very young team they are playing great footy and the young players are developing. I don't think anyone who watches VFL thought that he is that he was no good or that he is a Senior coach in waiting

I was seeing people ripping into him for his 3 quarter time interview LAST WEEK! This narrative has only appeared in the last 4 days or so. It’s done almost a complete 180 seemingly overnight

Hopefully the joy and optimism continues here with the chance to take a game from a team in the top 10.

Obviously potential senior berths up for grabs with another subpar showing last night.

O'Keefe returning from injury will be a watch as will several others who had best ever games last week.

Of draft/trade interest on the Brisbane side are their MSD selections from last year.
McLachlan, Beecken and Craven. Only McLachlan has had a senior call up so it will be a watch as to where the other two sit come the end of the season. Beecken is a running half back with good skills and Craven is a small forward.

I wold be seeing if Acres can play in the middle. Might give us another onballer to work with.

I'd like to see if Ben Camporeale can play wing as well, could be a way of getting him into the AFL side.
