Whilst technically correct in one sense, this ignores the caveat that he's on AFL mandated money and he's chosen not to re-sign early as he'll earn exponentially more downstream. It also ignores the fact that, wait for it, we can pay him more due to our extreme cap space.

In 2017 GWS were paying 4 midfielders a combined total of 4mill a year. The salary cap was 12.45 million.

The salary cap in 2027 (first year paying Harley a new deal) will be 18.44 million. Now lets say he signs a 5 year deal to take him through to free agency for 10 million. The salary cap at the back end of those 5 years is going to be around 22-24million.

2 million dollars a year for top line players will not be hugely out of order.

I read it differently.

I think Ralph is saying ‘if he wants to return home to Vic, why would he put in a counter offer?’. As in, that would be an odd thing to do if you want to leave and, therefore, the most logical explanation would be to believe his actions and that he wants to stay.

Not that I am inclined to trust anything Ralph has to say on the HR situation one way or the other.

Funny you mention that, I was bored a couple of weeks back so popped into their general AFL discussion thread. A couple don’t rate Reid and one even said they hoped he re-signs for 10 years just to make us suffer.

It might be no coincidence that the contract talks have ramped up if he is single as that pull home would have softened significantly.

Still sad though, but I'm sure he won't be single for long.

Did a little shameless deep dive and this would seem to be correct. Not a single photo or tag of him left on her Instagram, and they seem to have stopped liking/commenting on each others’ post.
