Pretty similar to Alex Pearce on DBJ?

They let Pearce off
I think it’s a completely different situation (one marking contest another a contested ball) but both should have got off.

5th player pinged for homophobic abuse in the past 2 seasons, and still less than what Tex got for his racial abuse.

It should’ve been 8-10 games to really drive home the message this behaviour will not be tolerated.
Should be the same, or even more than Tex.

Are the AFL saying homophobic vilification is a lesser crime than racial vilification?

Especially when one was direct, the other indirect.

Its the inconsistent nature of the penalties.

They said after the first one "we are going to make an example" and clearly hasn't worked.

FWIW the homophobic slur thing is a bit.... too drastic. Calling someone a *oofter or a ****sucker, isn't a homophobic slur IMO, its just a dumb thing to say.

But thats just my opinion.
How is calling someone homosexual (with what is commonly thought of as a slur) as an insult not homophobic? I'm interested in the thought process.

But calling someone a homosexual and that being considered a slur can only be so if it is wrong to be a homosexual.
I'm not condoning homophobic insults.

Yes exactly.

If you are angry at someone and you call them a slur, you obviously have negative connotations associated with it. Like you want to insult them. Because it would be a bad thing to be a *aggot.

TBF - surely plenty of folks here would've been alive when homosexuality was decriminalised in SA in 1975

Gay marriage wasn't recognised as legal until 2017

It's still illegal in around 33% of countries globally, with several having the death penalty as punishment

I doubt calling someone gay or a homo would move the needle. I'm sure that there are plenty of other slurs that some would find just as distasteful as some racist slurs

When you view everything under the banner of a TV package any calls to speed the game up is because other areas of the game are slowing down

As noted ruck contests , goal reviews , injury/blood rule etc . I think its time to re-jig the Time On Time Off Rule ( Dirty Bird thoughts? ) some continuous clock movement when in general play ie ball ups etc can be done with the need for a TO whistle

The next innovation will be to get rid of the ambulance and start with this

Trying to figure out if you know who I am in real life
Because I'm not sure we've ever discussed anything like this, and I'm unsure why you'd seek my opinion.

Anyway. I think the areas which are causing a degredation on the speed are mostly reviews/ruck rules.

The reviews I think need to be changed. In short, umpires are not to call for reviews, it's up to the umpires to make their decision. Then there's an automatic review which the ARC can call for if needed, but have until the resumption of play to make a change. None of that stuff like Keane's touched on the weekend while they're holding up play in the middle while it's looked at. The only time the arc is to get longer than resumption of play is a players review. BUT they need to go a cricket/nfl type route. You get it right. You keep it, but if you get it wrong. Lost and you cant review it again for the rd.

The other one in regards to ruck rules. This needs an overhaul. Scrap all ruck rules from at least the last ~20 years (I can tolerate the double circle, all rules since then can f*** off) - Get rid of the nominating ruckman. Bang, save seconds every stoppage. Get rid of banning the 3rd man up. Bang, you get a Patrick Dangerfield clearing the stoppage with a hitout like he used to do for us.

A few other rule changes I want are as follows
1) Get rid of the stand rule. It has no effect on the game. But a minor insignificant breach causes a 50. What happens in a 50? The clock stops as the ball is moved
2) Last possession SANFL STYLE (Not AFLw Style). Gives a free, player gets 10 seconds to bring it in. Better than a throw in where you have to wait for the rucks to nominate, get there, then the hangtime in the throw in.

I think all 4 of these rule changes (1. Elimination Ruck nominations, 2. Allowing 3rd man up 3. Eliminate stand rule, 4. Introduce Last Possession) would fix minor flaws in the game, and in the process, shorten games, and speed them up (will reduce stoppages).

May gets 3 games.

Imo he is unlucky as reckon this was a football incident.

The game is broken.

Why is the AFL so hyper-focused on concussion lawsuits that it’s suspending players for accidental head injuries from players hitting the line of the ball or basic tackles, while leagues like the NRL and NFL haven’t radically changed their rules despite facing similar legal pressures?

The AFL seems to be bending over backwards to show it’s “doing something about head injuries” even when an incident clearly wasn’t intentional. Players are getting suspended for split-second decisions in a contact sport - it’s not like they’re swinging punches. Meanwhile, the NRL is played largely the same, and the NFL, with its billion-dollar concussion settlements, has tweaked protocols but not the core rules of the game. Are those leagues just more confident in their legal defenses? Or are the AFL's finances not as good as everyone thinks that a lawsuit would bankrupt them?

The AFL’s overcorrection needs to be clarified beyond "Oh it's because of potential lawsuits". It’s starting to look less like a contact sport and more like a legal liability management exercise.

Stuart Dew moving to the Pear as senior assistant.

What I don't understand is why would the AFL making changes 'today' have any impact on lawsuits from years ago?

I tend to agree, what would have been the narrative if he pulled out of that contest?

Worked for Bailey Smith. Cured his mental health issues with that cash Geelong lifestyle.
And yet he continues to have mystery weeks off regularly. Not sure his lifestyle or mental health have changed that much

So The Chad not Josh's friend, but Dew is....

I reckon it will be appealed and overturned. And I do wonder why many of the media pundits have constantly gone on all week about how May needed to attack that contest differently. Agreeing with Voss that coaching needs to adjust for how players attack contests like that one. But why did not one of the media commentators bring up the fact that there were two players in the contest ??Why didn’t Evans have to attack that contest differently ?? Why does he get a straight run at the footy and May doesn’t. And just because Evans is a spud with no leg speed, and May’s athleticism means he makes up ground to contest that footy, and then a difference in height means Evans collects May’s shoulder. It’s an accident. Evans could have backed off and committed to being second to the ball and tackling, the same way it is being suggested what May should have done.
