Review Round 21, 2025 - Collingwood vs. Brisbane Lions

Can I say this without getting a crapload back. If he hadn't kicked straight we'd be having a whole different conversation. And he got very tired in the back half of the game. It's understandable given his prep.

But I didn't think his game was any great shakes except he kicked 3 times as many goals as Day has ever kicked.

Looked cleverer with his forward craft than his ruck craft.

He is slow though, with an uninterrupted pre season he should improve his endurance which would lead to him not looking as slow, hard to run in bursts if you are fatigued.

He finished well and popped up in the right spot but it wasnt like he was taking big marks or anything

My biggest concern was his rucking was terrible. I was hoping he was developing into a potential number 1 ruck but his rucking looked a long way off. Would almost prefer Day for rucking

Rapt for him to kick 3 but I was a little disappointed with his overall performance

Yeah I thought his rucking was below par.

I've seen him ruck so much better in the reserves obviously not against the big boys and you'd have to think he's going to improve a lot with some games under his belt.

But apart from the 3 , and full credit for that , all he did was get in the way sometimes and be handy to have someone his size in front of the pack.

If henry's game this week was his base level i'd consider swinging eric back if the crows or gws forwards get a hold on us.

tough call but he went ok when he went back last year, does a good job of spoiling a contest so the smalls can compete.

And Charlie has been mentoring the kids so we still have an older head able to direct play. Plus can parked Cam in the forward line. And morris is already tactically smart.

Not sure 1 full game in the seniors is his base level. Lets see what the next few games return us when oppo teams use is lack of mobility when running with the ball. I sincerely hope he stays and performs well but 1 game is far from what we should expect from him every week.

Sad to say but Charlie is nowhere near mentoring the kids. More like the kids are mentoring Charlie. His body language has much improved in the 2nd half of the year.

Henry had a real nice game but he had 5 disposals.

I'll take 3 goals from 5 disposals every game. Plus he created contests. He is dangerous enough that his defender wont leave him. He can drag that person away.

Plus his 5 tackles. Defensive forwards aren't the easiest to find.

He's got to come in and not hold back with his thoughts/recommendations on changes. Some of those change suggestions have not been so well received but he is the ultimate professional when it comes to managing difficult situiations. They (like we were) are lucky to have him.

Bunch of things - getting rid of the bounce (just don't do recalls), being super reactionary to clubs wishes/wants, the stuff about the fixture in terms of second competition that doesn't go away.

I like some of it because it benefits us (going to 5 on the bench, keeping the stand rule) but on the whole while I respect Swanny a lot, I have no faith in Andrew Dillon and where his instinct is for the game.

I also think he's going to get a rude awakening about the reality of a super large bureaucratic organisation that is thinking about the whole game, not just one club - I get that large bureaucracies are frustrating but there is a good reason why they are risk averse.

Eg having Michael Christian talk about tribunal decisions as part of a review/wrap up show - that's just potentially free evidence in concussion litigation in 5-10 years. Like Chrisso explaining why he didn't charge Maynard in 2023 and then the AFL overruling him, lol.

The Tribunal is frustrating but at the end of the day it serves 2 purposes (1) let players litigate their right to play (earn match payments or not pay fines) under the CBA and (2) protect the AFL for legal risk.

My fear is that because he's been with us for so long and that we're now a successful club and getting the envy vitriol that anything he does that is seen to advantage us will get a pile on so his instinct will be to avoid that at all costs.

I don't think his presence at the AFL will advantage us at all , certainly not more than most other clubs.
