A coping strategy for when your team is crap
Fake news, I whinge about the umps when we win!

Srsly I think its poor sportsmanship to blame the umps when you lose. I do moan when they are bad but its because it is aesthetically displeasing.

There's been very few games where enough bad frees were paid that you could say it changed the result.

I can really only think of two, both us vs North, both times we won and I'm pretty sure the umps got ****ed by the angry crowd and cost North the game. I'm thinking about last year, and the Shannon Grant game. Shameful.

Honestly, the only conspiracy theory I actually believe is that the Secret Herbs and Spices are malleable - that there is some kind of chain that feeds back to clubs to ensure that higher-band compo is achieved for utterly shit clubs losing good players to free agency.

Umps make mistakes and it can be frustrating
It's the suggestion of a grand master plot that is laughable

Furthermore, it is a very dynamic sport with rules that are reasonably open to interpretation. One person's error is another person's correct decision (often depending on just how one-eyed the supporter is, and whether they actually have a correct understanding of the rules)

Rubbish.

The ****ing idiot is the supporter who thinks they can suggest the umpiring/admin/rules are simply broken and thats why we see teams umpired differently.
The obvious advantage umpires were giving a particular set of clubs early in the season can hardly be considered random or a result of mismanagement, broken rules or poor umpiring when they can all be grouped by geography.

This thread is much like the Vicbias thread, full of Vic club supporters desperate to down play their league sanctioned advantages.
Time to find another hobby friend, this one isn't bringing you joy anymore. There is still happiness out there, you just need to take a chance.

Since then the almost 3:1 advantage Vics were getting has dried up and the count has tracked evenly and is currently 54-36, however, Vic teams have only won 17 games or ~33% of the 50 games since round 9.
Clearly the umpires were instructed to keep Vic clubs competetive early in the season and since it stopped they've plummetted to fill 6 of the bottom 7 and 7 of the bottom 10 spots on the ladder.
Honestly, I think that people outside of Victoria and NSW don't quite "get" how little it matters to them to be from Victoria or NSW.

I moved from Melbourne to Brisbane in 2019, and was struck by just how much people here identify themselves by their state in comparison to Victorians. Being a Queenslander is a massive point of pride; I'd imagine it's similar in SA and especially WA, being so far away. IMO it's a bit similar to Canada vs USA, or NZ vs Australia - without being dismissive, it matters a lot more to the little sibling.

I remember being in a Northcote pub for the 2018 GF - i.e. a ten minute tram ride up the street from Collingwood. 90% of the pub was barracking hard for a West Coast win that day.

We really, really, really do not care for Vic clubs other than our own.

BigFooty is home of a more...errr...nuanced....nuffie, but out in the true wild - Facebook comment sections - irrational conspiracy theories and unfiltered paranoid rambling runs free of genuine challenging.

Some of the most frequently sighted on my travels include:

* The Western Australian media has a pro-Eagles/anti-Freo agenda and never reports negatively about the Eagles because....reasons.

* Victorian Clubs are favoured at the tribunal and with the umpires - especially Collingwood for...reasons.

* Collingwood gets a favourable fixture because....reasons.

* A classic - Umpire Dean Margetts was the best man at Dean Cox wedding and was a die-hard Eagles fan who favoured the club - ESPECIALLY against Fremantle, who he hated.

This thread will takeoff once the Richmond posters see it. They love this stuff.

Because there are a lot of conspiracy theories based on no evidence does not mean that people do not conspire to manipulate things. And it does not mean that where actual evidence of bias or conspiring is present that it should be ignored.

The one that seems to get a run most weeks is that the AFL has paid off the umpires to ensure "X" teams wins game. It's moronic, but there are fans who believe this crap.
I don't know if I subscribe to the theory that Troy Pannell was paid to fix games by the AFL. But, given his recent jail time for defrauding his employer, combined with some questionable free kick discrepancies in games he umpired, it definitely makes things interesting as to whether he influenced a result in some way.

Thats the spirit

I hear you. Queenslanders are pretty good natured about sporting rivalries with other states.
South Australians on the other hand are just totally out there. An extremely biased media has fed them never-ending hatred for people over the border, with ratbags like Graham Cornes ( a Victorian himself I believe) spending decades egging them on with stories about those terrible viccos.

Yea it's fairly ridiculous. Hopefully isn't the case any more but I remember my family members in WA (all Geelong supporters) years ago telling me how some WC supporters would try giving them shit when they'd just beaten Footscray or something. Fam was like 'why would I give a flying f!ck?' Weird behaviour.

Great story in today’s Herald-Sun about why Greg Williams didn’t win the 1993 Brownlow Medal and Gavin Wanganeen won instead. Williams got 44 disposals and a goal so you’d think he would at least get 1 to tie the medal or 2 votes or 3 votes to win outright. He got none because both umpires that day thought although he was probably the best player that day, he was far from the fairest, with all his whinging and complaining and outright abuse the umps copped all day from him. So they basically said f$&k him. And it cost him the chance to be in a rare group.
