I think it’s Good Bloke Syndrome, see Billy Brownless and others.
As a Cats fan, I appreciate the work he did as an assistant during our 2007/09 premiership years. It was documented that he was one of the driving forces in helping GAJ go from a talented but inconsistent small forward to arguably the best midfielder of the modern era. When GAJ left to the Suns he cited his relationship with Hinkley as one of the drawcards.
This is all irrelevant compared to the fact that Ken clearly took PAFC as far as he could years ago and lacked the ruthlessness to make hard decisions or demand excellence.
His farewell tour this year has been an embarrassment, I’ve never seen a coach more checked out having watched his pre and post-match pressers last week.

And he had multiple blowouts.Ken Hinkley is a retread.
They’d laugh.Make him interview then knock him back.
"The players love Ken and he has a unique ability to get them up for big games"Kind of funny, we've gone from:
"Win the 2025 premiership, for Ken" to
"Maybe just try and make finals, for Ken" to
"Win the second Showdown, for Ken" to
"Win a home game in the last 5 rounds, for Ken"
Standards eh?
Finals are not big games for the sake of this discussion."The players love Ken and his has a unique ability to get them up for big games"
This is one of those Hinkley myths which has been repeated so often that the great unwashed believe it without question."The players love Ken and his has a unique ability to get them up for big games"
Crows players are too intense in showdowns. Our boys don't like itThis is one of those Hinkley myths which has been repeated so often that the great unwashed believe it without question.
Anyone paying the slightest attention to our results in finals and Showdowns knows it to be complete BS.

But I'd love for him to set fire to a Vic club. This is like a pyromaniac assuring the country fire services of Victoria he’ll be making sure he burns everything down here first.
But I'd love for him to set fire to a Vic club.
Ken gets them up for HIS big games not the clubs big games. Hence why a 2 point win against a lowly St Kilda last year was seen as a ‘big game’."The players love Ken and he has a unique ability to get them up for big games"
Unfortunately 99% of the media can't tell the difference, or they can but are horribly disingenuous.Ken gets them up for HIS big games not the clubs big games. Hence why a 2 point win against a lowly St Kilda last year was seen as a ‘big game’.
I'm not sure 2017 was the closest because the Club never really wanted him to leave.
I think they were much closer in 2023 after the showdown loss when Tredders said Ken's tenure was untenable. I strongly believe they would have sacked him had they lost badly to Sydney the following week.
Got reasonably close last year after the Brisbane debacle.
Koch went rogue in 2022, but I can't recall another time when he went against the advice of the Board or the footy experts per se. He tends to let people do their jobs. At the same time, his lack of knowledge means he doesn't appropriately hold people accountable. He has told countless people he doesn't understand why the Club hasn't won a flag under the current administration, which really speaks to the fact of the matter as to his incompetence when it comes to running a FOOTBALL CLUB.
Blight in 1999 comes to mind.Serious question because I dont know. Has a VFL/AFL coach ever before had a celebrated farewell game?
I'd say Kevin Sheedy at Essendon after 27 years and 4 premiershipsSerious question because I dont know. Has a VFL/AFL coach ever before had a celebrated farewell game?
