Autopsy Round 23 = Adelaide 59-56 Collingwood

Perspective - which team in the Top 8 does NOT think Pies are a threat again after tonight’s performance.?

Sorry to burst your bubble, No team is looking at the ladder thinking - I hope we avoid the Collingwood side of the finals draw. Brisbane, Hawthorn and GWS would love to pay the Pies in finals - they'd all be supremely confident. Adelaide, Freo, Geelong and GC would be thinking that they can all kick the 10 goals needed to kick a winning score against us.

Looks like our current game plan is taken from the AFLW. Get ball, and just long bomb it inside F50 in hope!!

Yeah, it looked like that last night. It was pretty frustrating. But like I said, that was the consequence of the ball living there for so long -- it highlights two things: 1. The lack of ball speed (Bobby Hill's disappearance has hurt us here, plus the "long down the line to a contest" from the back half) and 2. Our lack of an A+ key forward (which is why there are calls for Cox to return).

In no particular order, we lost the game because of:

Umpire bias
AFL conspiracy
Fly (too much incompetence to list here)
Moore (see Fly above)
Checkers
Not playing Bobby Hill
Playing JDG
Geelong (pretty sure Geelong were blamed somewhere, and Bailey Smith)

Did we play the top team on their home deck, after weeks of losses and negative media? Did we dominate parts of the game? Will we win the flag?

No to the last question. Age and injuries and have caught up with us, and possibly some player mismanagement (although we have no real clue about that).

We also have some of the most entitled supporters in the competition. The club owes you nothing. Try supporting one of the genuinely mismanaged clubs (there are a few).

And to the footy gods - please don’t let Geelong win it.

Cameron played pretty well
As defensive intercept, yes. He always tend to do well marking.

But he didn't do well actually being a ruck on hit outs and tackling. He costed a goal by tippy toeing a short throw in where Peatling got a clean look at a goal..... also doesn't won many ruck contests. But yes, as a defensive intercept marker he was good.

Nick was BOG easily

You mean the short thrown in that should of been bought back to do again?

The same was said about Melbourne.

They never tidied it up.
Melbourne has a glaring hole in the offense side of the game.

They get a key forward and they turn things around quickly. They have great defensive strategy but lack enough fire power against lots of teams.

Pies have both fire power with their multiple goal kickers and has a similar defensive structure Melbourne has.

We don't have fire power offensively at the moment, and our backline has been a major issue the past 5 weeks. They were better last night, though...

Perspective please.

We don't have more firepower. Our forwards are no better than Demons of 22-24. Just look at them and compare. Both teams carry a range of forwards who kick 20 - 40 goals, rarely kicking more than 50. I

Anyone else feeling a bit numb over the loss last night and the possibility season 2025 is slipping away along with any good chance we had of winning another flag? Or is it just me.
Agree. Yep we played much better and that's great to see.

But to walk away without the result has cost us top 4 and a double chance in finals.

I haven't see the game yet, so no strong opinions, but on paper, to have 71 I50s and not only kick 56 points, but also lose is just incredible. From what I've read in here, it sounds like our forward entries were similar to how they've been. It seems like we have transitioned to being a forward half team in comparison to scoring from the back half like we did in 2022-23, most likely to combat our lack of speed and to protect us behind the ball. Obviously, I'll have to watch the game, but stats wise it does seem like we might be okay come finals when things get a little tougher and congested.

10-5 marks i50, 32-6 tackles I50, 71-37 I50s, 52-38 in clearances, you probably don't lose many too games winning those stats like that other than against the top side on their home ground.

I agree with all those who think it was a really bad error to delay the substitution of Allan into the game so late.

With Adelaide flooding, we needed to try something different.

Also, surely we wanted to see what Ed Allan potentially could offer - even just as a sub - going into finals. We have no clue whatsoever after this game.

With McStay struggling so much, why wasn't a call made far earlier?

Adelaide were playing in a way that their talls were not going to hurt us. They were intent on smothering us in an asphyxiating forward flood.

So the failure to make a decision on the sub seems quite inexplicable to me.
Isn’t the answer pretty obvious? Fly either doesn’t think Allan is very impactful or doesn't yet trust him to not make a costly error when the game is in the balance.

Weird right. Did he take Allen thinking we'd be miles in front and be able to make a tactical sub to rest a player?

Definately. Who could imagine 6 weeks ago we are now relying on other results just to make the top 4. Also the likely scenario of Hawks in an Elimination final.

Missed the game. Have only read 5 pages but have to say the pea hearts are out in force.
Simple facts
  • held the most potent fwd line in the game, to 59 points ie defence is back
  • had 34 more I50’s - that will give Nicks nightmares because he knows they got out jail.
  • smashed them in clearances and tackles so our pressure game is back.

So to all the doomsayers- which team has the most upside?
Which team wins this game 9/10 with such field position dominance?

In a return match which team do you think will have no fear?

NS these are not necessarily my views but we can spin information any way you want

If I was Nicks, this is how I would analyse these points in the review
  • we gave them a 5 goal start and still in front at half time so in the future, no need to panic, we’ll get them
  • they only scored 56 points against us, barely over 20 points in the following 3 quarters, do that again and we’ll beat them by more
  • our plan of flooding D50 works brilliantly - they could have a hundred entries and and we’ll still get them on the rebound
  • our clearance game was off and we still beat them
  • I think we have more upside than the Pies bc we were down in so many areas and still won

Every coach “fears” the other teams in finals bc anything can happen but Nicks would fear us no less than any side in the 8 - why would he fear us more than any of the others?

By all means be positive NS but without watching the game how would you know what the context was behind the stats you quote?

This gives me the most hope
The weather SHOULD be good in Sept so we’ll be able to live or die by our own brand
We just need match ups to go our way

Did you feel like you should have been further ahead at quarter time?
"No, I thought that was about the right margin. The kick on the siren helped. I thought we had dominance and the game was a bit different when it wasn't wet. We could move the ball, change the angles, you could mark the ball a bit easier. We started well. We needed to though, we needed to. We worked all week. I was really proud of our coaches [of] putting some things in front of the players [because] it wasn't good enough for us around our system and around our effort. It was really pleasing we can turn it around. Have we got more work to do? Absolutely, but again I think we're heading in the right direction".

We can only take the positives out of it...
We're still in the top 4
Our backline really stood up
Our mids worked hard all night
We were able to really dominate the game playing the top side away
I think if we get our cohesion and connection back forward of centre, we will have some confidence playing Adelaide again, which looks the most likely scenario in finals.
Hopefully this time the umpiring is of AFL standard, and they're not intimidated by the crowd and pay the free kicks they should be...

Not much discussion about Will Parker.

I thought his game was solid for a young kid who hasn't played AFL in a while.

I really liked the aggressive kick he went for in the 3rd(?). He took it upon himself to try something different after a long sequence of wasted entries.
He’s exactly what we’ve missed for weeks
The youthful exuberance
We really should have had he, Allan and Steele playing a lot more - would have been fantastic for their development and may have given s the drive we needed
