Autopsy Round 23 = Adelaide 59-56 Collingwood

I think a lot of folks are missing the forest for the trees here.

Our inside 50 scoring percentage was abysmal, yes, but it was largely by design. We were allowing the extra in defence for the crows in the second half because it meant our own defense became near impenetrable. The Crows only scored one second half goal that wasn't the DIRECT result of an umpiring howler. Not just an iffy decision, an outright mistake.

(Meanwhile we got absolutely zero love on any of the 50/50 calls inside our own forward half, which would have made the scoreboard much more interesting)

Tactically, honestly, the plan worked. The structure and the gameplan outmatched the best team in the league on their home deck. Part of that meant copping a huge outnumber when the ball went forward. But that's part of the risk/reward, you can't have it both ways.

I think we probably made the correct call - because with even a tiny bit of luck, we win that. Alas, we didn't get the luck, such is footy, and such is life.

It wasn't an enjoyable watch, it was frustrating as feck, but strategically I think the coaches got a very large part of the setup right.

And intensity-wise, that game looked like COLLINGWOOD for the first time in a long time.

Tough beat, but there are reasons to be bullish here. Go pies.
Unless we smash the Dees and pump up that percentage, it's hard to feel bullish about winning the flag from outside the top four.

Very disappointing result considering the effort we put in. Can’t fault the effort at all.

It feels strange that our backs and midfield killed them, yet we lost. There were a lot of poor entries of course but the ball lived in our 50. Should have done better.

Checkers and McStay totally annihilated. That’s where we lost it I think.
A team that has 71 F50 entries and still loses a game, especially when the other side only has 37, have some serious connection, game plan and structural issues, particularly up forward...

I agree with all those who think it was a really bad error to delay the substitution of Allan into the game so late.

With Adelaide flooding, we needed to try something different.

Also, surely we wanted to see what Ed Allan potentially could offer - even just as a sub - going into finals. We have no clue whatsoever after this game.

With McStay struggling so much, why wasn't a call made far earlier?

Adelaide were playing in a way that their talls were not going to hurt us. They were intent on smothering us in an asphyxiating forward flood.

So the failure to make a decision on the sub seems quite inexplicable to me.

It seems that when teams get a lead on us, or equalise after being down (like Adelaide tonight) they go into flood mode against us.

They have assessed that we cannot score, and they have a high probability of getting one or two out the back.

Adelaide maintained this strategy for the entire second half against us.

It is not new.

Freo, GC did the same.

What is it about our game, our style, etc that allows teams to exploit this weakness?

And why do we seem never to have even attempted to devise an innovative strategy to oppose it?
I honestly think we look so stagnant in the forward line. No space, and poor kicking over forwards heads etc. Not sure what the answer is there. But one thing I’ve noticed, we don’t use the lead on forward mark option nearly enough. It’s always bombing up in the air hoping that opposition backs don’t intercept mark it. Not sure why it’s so hard to have more players lead up and have kicks land on their chest at around 40-50m from goal

That’s interesting given it was reported earlier in the week that Bobby wanted to fly over and be with the boys even if he didn’t play. Whatever the off field troubles. Something is certainly up. Respect his privacy and the club to make the right decisions for the team and for him. As well as support Bobby as much as he may need.
Yeah Fly shut it down really quickly when told it was reported Bobby would be going over, he said it was never mandatory, but his tone and face told a different story.
If I’m speculating, and I am, The club probably told Bobby it’s not a good idea and will just invite more speculation, which I think was the right thing to do.

Are you serious? We lost to Geelong 3 times. How we lost doesn't matter, we lost 3 times mate. If we were better than them we wouldn't have lost 3 times. Just in case my point didn't register, we lost to them 3 times. That is 3 times, I repeat, 3 times!
Why does this give me Greek cousins arguing vibes?

It’s like our midfielders and forwards are lacking some sort of chemistry. We now either bomb to Elliot or a small forward hoping for them to out mark three taller opponents, or we play frantic chaotic footy that leads to the opposition rebounding it anyway

Yep. I'd rather just kick to the pocket with instructions to play defence, get a throw in out of it and work stoppages for goals. It'd be better than bombing it on the head of an undersized forward with 3 oppo players on him.

I think we need to play Cox and drop McStay. Cox is just a far better ruck/forward choice and is just very hard to cope with for defenders. The forward structure simply isn't working and something needs to change. We just look better with Cox and Cameron either dropping back into holes or pushing forward, neither can do this without the other. One of the MMM's has to go and McStay is the one for me. We were destroyed in the ruck tonight.

True Molly, if we win our next 5 games we win the flag. Assuming we don't fall into the top 4 which mean we need to win our next 4 games. I doubt top 4 will happen now though realistically. How likely do you think we will win our next 5 games though? Pretty hard to imagine given we have lost 5 of 6.

Certainly won’t be easy. Wasn’t confident going in to tonight’s game (not uncommon for me) but we responded really well to our flogging last week so I’m certainly more confident now we could still win it. It’s as wide open as I can recall an approaching final series though. You could make a case for any of the 9 sides in contention. We’ll get a better picture once the 8 is finalized and can look at an actual schedule.

I think we should dump the 3 talls in the forward line. 2 is enough considering none of them are top notch.

We just need one genuine tall that can take a contested mark or get an arm chop free kick within goal scoring distance, Cox can but none of the MMM's seem to.

if cox was ever umpired like other forwards for chopping the arms hed have kicked double as many goals
people never liked the idea of an unplayable tall yank that plays for collingwood getting free kicks, fairly or not

We know what Mason can give us, definitely competes in the ruck and as he plays 2nd ruck now he’s going to play against a forward not a ruckman.
Needs a tall defender when forward allowing easier matchups for our other forwards. He may kick 1 or 2 goals but that’s not what he’s there for, he’s there to worry the opposition with his size and when the rotate the mismatch often gets a free from the smaller defenders.

Not saying he’s the answer because we know he’s not but he’s been a big reason why we were winning in 2023 and let’s face it the M’s have been 💩.

Much more like it tonight aside from our inability to score there for long periods. Then again Crows were struggling themselves. It was a good contest in some ways and excruciating in that we couldn’t get more reward for effort with so many inside 50’s. Definitely some positives though and we won’t be easy beats in finals.
