It helped that he nailed almost every inside 50 he kicked. His delivery was brilliant last night.
Definitely was very good. Just clear they'd been given the stat, so were noticing it (as well as mentioning 100 times that he's the best in the comp). He's always good, but this is the first time I've seen this level of commentator adoration.

Not really a complaint, just found it funny.

I think that the blues board are completely broken. Just from the first page of their autopsy thread:

That is how we were when Eddie took over. Totally broken, and that was only 8 years ion winning a flag. The people spoke by no longer attending and demanding change, and voted Eddie in a landslide. Thankfully, he went out and got Malthouse and we quickly turned it around. For Carlton, they have no faith the hard decisions will be made. And they need the hard calls, they need to shake things up and trade players with currency.

**** it, the sun is shining, the Pies beat Carlton on a Friday night and I’ve got a 3 day weekend! Time to break it down! 😆

Naicos: 3 votes for me. Feels like the media do everything they can every week to justify why it might be someone else that gets best on or takes votes off Nick. I don’t think Nick is as far ahead in the count as some predictors have (my personal one hasn’t got him leading), but I’m starting to get this feeling that he wins it this year despite being better last year a la Swan/Judd in 2010/11.

Maynard: He himself said he was a bit rusty, but could’ve fooled me. Just did what Bruzzy does. Competes, brings energy and gets around his team mates for every act that helps the team!

Pendlebury: How is bro 37 and still playing better than 75% of the comp? Calling it now, All-Australian squad at a minimum and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the team (purely because the top teams do tend to get looked at favourably).

DC: Snapper on SEN said that Pittonet monstered him. Finey rightfully pulled him up! Speaking of AA squads, a formality imo. Had an excellent year, hope they can agree on a deal soon.

Jaicos: Another All-Australian contender! The move to half back has absolutely worked, needs to start getting spoken about in the same light as the Bailey Dale’s and Dayne Zorko’s of the world who are pure offence-type defenders. Metres gained and pure kicking game!

McStay: I cross everything that he can see out the rest of the year and hopefully get to play in a flag if we can get it done. The thing that I love about him is his presence and his physicality in the air!

Moore: Without doing too much research, his best game of the year! He has his doubters, but I think people have set the bar too high for him. We don’t need superman Darcy, we need reliability and I think he meets that expectation.

Titch: Welcome back Titch! I won’t get carried away yet, but I’ll enjoy the return and hope that this form from Titch is something he can sustain for 12 weeks. If so, he adds greatly to our midfield!

Sully: Fly said it, this was his best game for our club. Our depth was doubted, he’s one of plenty who are playing their role and contributing to the overall competition for spots!

Elliott: Raising the bat on a career best season from a goals perspective against the arch enemy is a cherry on top! All-Australian lock, think Jeremy Cameron has the Coleman sewn up but we’ve never been about individual awards! Get the man his second flag and I think he’ll be fine.

Quaynor: Played his role, can only beat what the oppo gives you. IQ looked like a man amongst boys against those pleb small forwards that Carlton fans have the unfortunate displeasure of watching.

Lipinski: It’s not like I’m breaking an exclusive here, but his kicking inside 50 is divine. Plays his best footy when he’s helping the defenders and getting involved in the chain on counter attack. Has been doing that superbly of late!

Crisp: Took a while to get going, but finally hit his literal stride and his toughness, great run/carry game and long kicking were on display as they are more often than not. Uber consistent and durable.

Membrey: Flourishing as a third option. Goalless only twice this year, multiple goals 6 times. These are the sort of list management decisions that win flags.

Mihocek: Just battles all night, epitomises the phrase work horse. Give me Mihocek’s career over Curnow’s every day of the week and twice on Sunday’s.

WHE: Hard to be critical of anyone last night, so I’ll spare Will. Started well, my trust in him isn’t rock solid and I don’t think he’s best 22. He is versatile and athletic which works to his advantage!

Long: Interested to see if the return of Titch has a sustained impact on the output of Longy. It’s been the discussion for the last month if both can co-exist in the same side, we’ve got 4 weeks to get a good enough sample size before we settle on how we attack a premiership. Still played his part last night though, I do hope they can make it work, I think they can!

Houston: He never has been a high possession player, I’m not judging him on that number. His kicking is a weapon and we probably don’t use it enough. I think he’s still finding his feet in the system whilst still contributing to the best backline in the comp.

Howe: Don’t really have any thoughts on Howie. Barely had to get out of first gear and had the luxury to sub him. We know what he can do, didn’t need it last night!

Perryman: I don’t think he’s quite hit the heights I thought he might this year, but he’s probably not playing the role I thought he would either. At the end of the day, sometimes you just need guys who come to work, earn their money and go home with no fuss. This is Pez!

Steele: 19 disposals on debut, didn’t look out of place at all. I’ve got high hopes for all of our players, but this guy showed some great signs! His kicking surprised me, we’ll see how much of that is down to lack of pressure from Carlton vs how much is pure skill.

Markov: Could be doing a lot worse than to have Leggy as a depth guy. Always brings great energy and his happiness is infectious. Looks like he’s always having fun and that rubs off on those around him!

Parker: Obviously had the licence to just take it on when he did join the game. The race had been run and won, he looks like a smooth mover. Nice to see him get some minutes under the belt.

Anywho, a great start to the weekend. It can all change very quickly and only takes one off weekend in September to end it all, but we can rightfully get excited about what may be. Fingers crossed we can go all the way again! Enjoy your Saturday B&W fam.

I already pole vaulted out of bed but this just gave me further high excitement. 😍

Fly's presser

How are you feeling after another strong win?
"We're really pleased with that performance. We just talked internally about setting a goal at the start of the year to qualify for the finals and we can officially say that we got 14 wins and we do that. Not in our wildest dreams did we ever think we'd have that at this time of the year. This is such a tight competition, so we wanted to celebrate that. We have a deep win on that. I'm just rapt tonight with our system against a team with their backs against the wall".
Is there a sense that your ability to blood new players and bring back Tom Mitchell and still win in a such big manner is a luxury but it also gives you selection pressure in the next few weeks?
"It’s a good problem to have if that’s real, the selection pressure. The guys coming in and doing their job, that's a credit to our development team. We got a guy playing who's been at the club for three weeks, young Roan [Steele]. He looks like he's been in the club for months, so someone's doing that work. Someone is teaching that young man the patterns of our offence and defence. Andy Otten and Josh Fraser are fantastic in the way they set these guys up. Wil Parker comes in and does a job. He looks like he's been playing with us for weeks. We're rapt in our system. Lachie Sullivan's best game of AFL footy he's ever played. We got a few guys out and that challenges you, but it's nice when you got players who come in and do their job".
Jamie Elliott has kicked 40+ goals in a season for the first time in his career.
"Yeah, he's been fantastic, Jamie. Never been happier and part of the leadership group. I've repeated myself here [and] things I've said in the past, but the way we're connecting inside 50, Jamie is giving us a great presence and playing a part of a system that we’ve always found a way to score, but never really had anyone that kicks four or five goals regularly and Jamie’s done that this year which has probably taken us to a new level".
You must have been delighted with the performance of Darcy Moore with his marking and closing speed and his ability to cover the ground so much?
"Yeah, we got Jamie [Elliott] at one end getting rewarded for our system and ball movement, and then the other end our defence, Darcy just led from the front. He was outstanding and in a big game against an arch rival to have your captain stand up and just say 'hey look, this is going to be hard to score against tonight because I'm going to make us be really hard to score against'. We're rapt in his game. He was fantastic".
That's the build up of that slow defensive game you preserve and then building up to that fast play to give your forwards first opportunity to score.
"It's all that. It's absolutely all that. We like to think our offence and defence are hard and glove. If you go too fast it's hard to defend behind and if you go too slow, then it's hard to score as well. We like to live in the balance of that. Tonight's an indication that we kept the opposition to 58 or 59 points. We were rapt in that".
Is that the perfect blueprint/template of how you want to play, especially in the first three quarters?
"Look, we don't aim for perfection. We don't. It's actually a word I wrote on the board before the game. We're trying to get balance of offence and defence, but we're not aiming to be perfect. We're allowed to make mistakes. We can grow from those things. I just want our players to feel comfortable. I think last week there was an air of expectation, 'we're playing West Coast, come on', but West Coast are playing good footy. Well they were in particularly last week in terms of how they were hard to play against. Not a word we use often, only maybe to draw upon 'hey, we don't have to be perfect'".
You took 22 contested marks in this game, is it something you relish in that you can compete in the air but also on the ground you've got that balance?
"Yeah, I just want to give a shout out to our analytics team, Jack Prato. He does an incredible job, him and his team. We saw a bit of a trend towards our contested number, which we didn't love. It wasn't sort of you know, we'd won 7 games in a row, but we're process driven so we did a bit of a deeper dive, or Jack and his team did. It's incredible the work they did to just spell out a couple of little areas we thought we could tidy up and we get to work tonight because of that research and all those numbers and the breaking down of every contest for the last eight weeks of how we won it, how we didn't, how we didn't neutralise whatever it looks like and then our coaches can get to work. This is an organisation, we got so many amazing staff and Jack and the analytics team did an awesome job this week".
Are you feeling for Michael Voss at all given the pressure he's under?
"Yeah, of course I do. For all our excitement, there’s a level of ‘I hope my mate’s okay'. As much as we want to beat our arch-rival, that’s done now. Just go into love and care and support for a guy that I’ve got enormous love and support for. So, I hope he’s going okay, and this is a tough industry. We know we sit in this chair; it’s a hot seat. When things don’t work out, we know what the job sometimes puts across your desk, but I just hope he's okay".
The two of you always talk about how you don't talk in the build up, but will you touch base with him now?
"Yeah, I'll reach out and I'm not sure I can do anything other than just be there for him so we can maybe have someone to chat to through this period, so I wish him well".
Isaac Quaynor seems to relish being a leader down back and he had 3 contested marks, how have you seen his influence given he flies under the radar compared to other some defenders?
"Yeah, I thought last week he had 9 possessions but he was so influential. He just has a big impact and the ball comes to his area, he marks it all the time. He's back to his 23 form, he was in the All-Australian squad in that year. The numbers don't tell the story. The impact and the ability to win and neutralise, I'm loving Q's form. His leadership has really taken off too. His second year in the leadership group and I'm rapt with his form".
Tom Mitchell made his return. How did you see his performance tonight and how important can he be going forward?
"Yeah, another one that's been hungry. We talk about the youth coming in and doing the job but it's nice to bring in a Brownlow Medallist that's been really hungry to get an opportunity. He's been on my desk sitting at my couch for weeks, 'what do I need to do'? 'what more do I need to do'?. I sort of saw the middle of winter as a great chance to bring Tom back because the game changes. His contest [and] clearance, all those things that Tom's brings to the fore. I was really rapt at getting him back in our team".
Congrats on qualifying for the finals, but there's still a long way to go. How do you balance between wanting to finish as high as you possibly can, but also managing players?
"This will be a delicate balance, not to flirt with too much but then you have a reality that we're in a good position to look at tonight. We had three or four guys that are ill. Why would we put them out there? They’re not well. Maybe in the past you're fighting for something, 'oh, hopefully three quarters of Steele Sidebottom's best might be enough'. Shout out to you Steele, we missed you tonight. We just don’t need to do that. This has given us a chance to do things like that. Jarrod Wade, I'll make sure to leave all this stuff to him. He's in my eyes the best in the business. We’re managing players through games. If you have a look at the game time tonight, some of the players have low game time. We certainly won't flirt with things, but there’ll be a deliberate plan to make sure we’re right".
The performance of Daniel McStay with 4 goals, but his impact on the team since he's returned has really set you in another direction?
"Yeah, and I thought Tim Membrey was fantastic with his leadership and his fight and giving us a contest. To have those guys working in unison and we go back to the numbers and we need to improve in certain parts of the game and that's one thing we talked about and we went to work on it. Dan gets rewarded and we love when Dan's jumping the ball. He's got sticky fingers".

I liked this bit from The Age's review of the game:
That the Blues and Pies had roughly equivalent players absent – the Pies without Steele Sidebottom and half a dozen others from their optimal 23 – meant that Carlton was much worse off, since their depth is toddler-pool shallow.

And this:
Scott Pendlebury strolled around, making footy look as easy as dog walking, as he has for 20 seasons.

It's the non football people on the board that are impatient and ruin the team by putting additional pressure on the football department getting their job done. Carlton went through number 1 picks and premiership coaches and it's all wasted because it wasn't the football department doing the damage, it's the rich stake holders playing politics and putting targets on people's backs if they don't produce results in a short time... it's horrible culture.

Carlton has horrible executive board culture... all the old gangsters wanting to see a premiership before they clock it so they are rushing everything and it doesn't lead to good results.

We are such a connected club.
if you want to see how connected, look no further than Mr Wade.

Qtr time, we were late out of the huddle.
Everyone was coming off except Wade, who appeared to be hovering and looking back into the D50.
He started to Jog towards D50, yelling out.
...Turns out we had 7 defenders. IQ was supposed to be on the bench.
Players we're talking and IQ looked up and saw Wade yelling at him and took off for the bench.
They both made it off just in time.

Head of High Performance, counting players and bench players and before anyone else had twigged (including players), he was off to make sure we had the right numbers.
Let that sink in.

That's seriously good awareness and heads up thinking.
That is impressive.
I saw Houston yelling at Bruzzy to get back to the goal square at the Ponsford end 👍🏻

Bruce Mathieson put in his 2c worth in the press recently.
He should keep his mouth shut, but because he provides money, he thinks he can have a say, when he should leave footy matters to footy people.
Good luck Wrighty!
You're gonna need it!

Nice 👌

Sun came out here this morning, headed up to Tathra pub for lunch and soaked in the 25 degree warmth. Couple of pints of the local IPA and a nice tapas and home now and about to enjoy a nice red watching the replay again.

Nice time to be a Pie.

Just watched the replay.
That third quarter was something else.
The Resters should be happy given the entire team took a well deserved break in the last quarter.

At the game I was laughing so hard during that 3rd qtr. Most fun I've had at a Blues match in a long while.

Even when we fumbled or made a mistake, we made it work in our favour.

Pity about some of those points in the last, it could have easily been a 10 goal win.

That is impressive.
I saw Houston yelling at Bruzzy to get back to the goal square at the Ponsford end 👍🏻
Yeah I watched Dan a lot.
Could have been used more, but was positioning himself inside for the short 45.
We just didn’t want to take on the risk.

He was very good defensively and as you said, wasn’t afraid to let players know when they were out of position.
Was impressive. Even if he isn’t having the offensive impact he had at Port.

Yes 100% correct, factions within the football department to engineer coach sackings, and its happening again.
