NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

The opposition club didn’t report Graham’s incident he took it on his own to self reporting it. There is a difference.

Compare that to Issac waiting for not just the player, the opposition club AND his own club before taking any form of ownership.

It will end with 4-5 weeks and that’s fair. It’s fair for everyone. Large whack for Issac but who cares there he’s done it to himself. Good for the game keeping it remotely consistent and it’s good for the wider football community and other groups that may have been affected. A 4-5 week suspension whereby he can do some education programs is a start

Collingwood didn’t report it , Adelaide did and once again you’re completely ignoring the point

In AFL land, calling someone a f***** and doing what Tom Lynch did is apparently worthy of the same punishment.

But in the real world, nothing happens to Rankine, but Lynch commits a criminal offense and goes to jail.

Totally out of touch with the real world. Bunch of virtue signallers.
Go and call someone a f.... at work tomorrow and let us know how it goes

He should get matches. What he did was wrong and extremely stupid given the gravity of finals etc..

But the reported weeks of 4 plus is super excessive (and yes I know there is precedent but that doesn't make it right). They need to change the rules to say 2 weeks for a first time offence.

This what Eddie McGuire has suggested.

2 weeks first offence, 12 weeks second offence

Just bullshit.. no one likes the whole situation but the fact you have Collingwood players snitching after the weekend speaks volumes.. izak was being antagonised all game and people say things in the heat of the moment.. this whole woke culture can gagf as far as I’m concerned..

These incidences should resort to a fine or one wk suspension and nothing more…
If it was a Collingwood player saying it to a Crow player I doubt we would have even heard about it, Pathetic that Collingwood lose the game and snitch like a bunch of sore losers.
Definitely not worthy of missing a final but society has gone piss weak and the AFL will hand out an excessive penalty too avoid backlash.

What were your thoughts on Finlayson's suspension last year

I think it shows that person is a pretty shit human being. If a player misses finals because of it, well they only have their own bigotry and stupidity to blame, and lets be honest, most people who are homophobic these days would not be doing too well on an IQ test.
Got it, personal insults are terrible, if only all those shit humans with low IQ could be more like you

I see we’ve reached the deflection and delusion stages now.

Some amazing whataboutisms and irrelevant hypotheticals in the last few pages.

Dont care if they're remorseful. As long as they change.

It's (apologies are) all words. And I dont care if someone says they're sorry. I need their actions to show it.

I did. Read your post again. You said would you rather a GF or an away prelim. So you’ve assumed the result.

If you hadn’t assumed the result you would have said home prelim vs away prelim.
The guy I quoted was implying 3 weeks off in finals for Rankine.. Saying we should drop the 1st game to get him back in the grandfinal.. If anything he was implying we'd win an away prelim..

My response was me preferring a home prelim which if his premised 3 final ban was the outcome would mean Rankine was out for the grand final if it was made.. over purposely dropping the first game thinking an away prelim to get into the grandfinal so we had Rankine playing was better.

The thread is quite something, haha.

It's pretty simple: AFL have set a precedent with comments like this so if it was said and can be verified, it's 4+. If the AFL hand down a lesser suspension they've gone back on their word and can be rightly pilloried for their usual finals/good player/money bias. Any other discussion is beside the point.

Pretty sure they've set precedent on giving less weeks or even no weeks in finals. I mean Cotchin playing that 2017 GF.

I wouldn't hold it against someone as an irreversible sin but I also don't buy into "heat of the moment" because you've got to have slurs at the ready in your vocab to get to that. I think taking your right whack (via suspension), owning up that it was a shit thing to say and then trying to be better is enough. I'm what many on this site would describe as a fanatical leftie but I don't subscribe to hanging people on one offence and I know people can change and improve - especially idiots in their 20s. Come down hard on the behaviour, encourage the person to be better.

No it doesn’t. It shows that they made a mistake. We all do.

I cheated on my wife and destroyed my own family.

I’d like to think that at that time I was a shit bloke. I’d also like to think it doesn’t condemn me to being that six years later because I changed my behaviour and moved on from it and I’m not that person anymore. one of my better mates at work went through a gambling addiction and ripped off $48,000 from the social club. Turned himself into the police and spent the next few years cleaning hotels at the crack of dawn on top of a second job to pay off his debts while. He’s not a shit bloke. I know this because I know the guy. He was a dickhead to do what he did and an idiot and selfish but he’s a kind man who has raised another man’s daughter since she was 18 months old, he’s been punished and hurt people but he’s righted his wrongs.

People f**k up. It doesn’t make it ok, not by any stretch and he should be punished for it, and he should be asking the particular section of society that it was referring to in a derogatory sense - as well as the opponent it was directed to - for forgiveness, and making a heartfelt apology (assuming he means it). It also means he’s probably stupid and an idiot.

It doesn’t inherently mean someone is a shit person. Especially in the world we live in where people do some of the most f**ked up things imaginable to others on a daily basis.

If he deep down had an inherent belief that homosexuals were inferior human beings that didn’t deserve the same treatment as everyone else and didn’t talk to them, didn’t acknowledge them etc etc or recognise them as he would recognise everyone else, that might be a problem on the ‘human being’ scale. This however doesn’t prove anything other than the fact that, like all of us, he can be a dickhead

We're not in finals yet!

I do take your point, though - and it's an element of this story that makes it very interesting. There'll be some blokes who have sat on the sidelines for many weeks watching this with great interest. If the league wants to rethink the level of these suspensions, do it on the off-season. It'd be so glaringly blatant if Rankine gets less than what others have in 2025 for the alleged comment/s.

If a player had a hate campaign going against homosexual people, I wouldn't think that was any good.

A one line put down in the heat of battle....we all need to smarten up our language around these things. It is important, but it would be more if the person didn't learn from the experience or if they continued to do it that I would form a particularly dim view.

The AFL has these penalties way out of proportion. A one week suspension or stiff fine for a first offence should be sufficient to get compliance, second offences, happy for the more severe penalties. Plenty of people I respect have made similar comments to Rankine, and I am sure I have. I would like to think none of us do so any more, because where we grew up in a world that encouraged it, we now realise it was wrong.

Something that could be a slip of the tongue, can be forgiven, censured, or moderately penalised.

Sustained or vicious vilification or repeat offences, save the bigger punishments for these.

What is the view of American African-American sportsman using the N-word to refer to each other which they do all the time. I was listening to Eddie McGuire talking about his son who plays Gridiron and he said that his son said it goes on all the time. Should those athletes all be suspended for 5 weeks, and if not why not?

So basically homophobia is half as serious in the month of September?

Even old Gill Mc would have had a hard time spinning that one.

Does it apply to MRO incidents too?
Have you already forgotten? Houston's hit on Rankine late last year was closer to a 10 week suspension, but was cut done to 5 because Port were about to play finals.....

Would you want white men suspended for calling each other white honkeys?

I see it as a generational pass down, it was what you were called if being soft or another word starting with a p because it was associated with the campness that was colloquially paired with the homosexual types. It is something that many a kid of the generation of now and before and before that were called when they stubbed their toe and whined too much. It is not acceptable and it is great that the awareness has been raised to what the actual terms mean as a lot of children would of grown up using the term in close on total ignorance. That is why I still harbor some sympathy for the people using it in terms of rage as I don't believe they are using with a hatred filled for the homosexual community. I believe they are using it with intentions of another message.

It goes to show how ****ed up things are when a Swan's player gets fingers deliberately stuck up his ass a couple of weeks ago for everyone to see and the AFL find no case to answer, but a little heat of the battle slur on the field not picked up by microphones is supposedly going to cost a player a finals series.
That just don't sit right.
