Adelaide's defence he was provoked by a sledge, which I would have thought just reinforced how bad a sledge can be.

Anyway, we are in John Coleman territory now.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

A childish defence by Adelaide.

More on that came out last night - the provocation was apparently a comment from Houston for laying a bump in last years Showdown which saw Rankin taken off on a stretcher

Maybe not the smartest comment from Houston, but doesn't explain Rankin then using a slur against a different player

Again, more excuses.

Just show some character, admit he crossed a line set by the AFL, and cop the punishment fair and square.

It'd show character and integrity - much more so than resorting to wimpy excuses for bad behaviour.

Adelaide Football Club would be well advised to think carefully about their next move.

If they intend to support the player behaviour by mounting a defence that suggests Rankine gets a lesser fine because he was provoked prior himself, that's just disrespectful to the entire process and where the sport is trying to get to.

I'm going to choose my words very carefully (for obvious reasons) but can you imagine if the boot was on the other foot and Rankine had been racially vilified by Quaynor. There would be people calling for Quaynor to be hung at dawn out the front of of AFL House. If Adelaide have proof that Rankine was racially vilified and that lead to him saying what he did then speak up - or shut up.

But if Rankine was merely copping verbal sprays from a Collingwood player with no racial (or similar) undertone, then I think you just take accountability as player and club, accept the penalty and do better.

If I shoot someone because they call me a mongrel Geelong supporter (or racially or sexually vilify me) then I'm not sure I'd expect too much sympathy from the judicial system.

I think that's why the AFL has been pushing for 5 weeks

  • Collingwood contacted Adelaide regarding the incident the next day, after which time Rankine admitted to what he said
  • Rankine did contact the Collingwood player to apologise, but only after the club was made aware
  • Adelaide while saying all the right things on Monday when the story broke publically, seem to now be pushing back and raising various issues to minimise the situation

I'm not sure that the AFL would really be happy with that which is why all the noise from journalists & the media seem to be leaning towards a 5 week minimum suspension

I think if Rankine & Adelaide came out quickly on their own, admitted the **** up and didn't look for excuses, maybe the AFL goes down the path of just a 3 or 4 week suspension being we're getting into finals - but that hasn't been how things have played out which is why the longer suspension is on the table

The Adelaide board is crazy. Amazed that they did not show this level of concern when other players from other clubs have been sanctioned for similar offenses. The idea that playing finals is some sort of special case is just disrespectful to everyone involved in the sport and the wider public.
Bunch of yobbo’s in there, absolute mouth breathers. However this is the issue isn’t it. This is why no man in the league has stepped forward. Players and spectators/supporters are a reflection of society, where we are surrounded by all types.

Change is hard, that’s why we don’t have that person stepping forward, because we just have so many knuckle dragger types with the IQ of a potato, screaming loudly.

Their board is a laugh.

Adelaide should’ve owned responsibility here and taken whatever punishment they get.

They always have this victim mentally, whether it’s the umpires, racism, the whole camp saga.

They could’ve shown real growth and league leadership here but instead they prioritize victimhood and on field success.

They still clearly haven’t learned as an organisation after the mistakes make in the past. Any excitement or good will for an Adelaide flag has been erased. I hope they bow out in straight sets!

Also if I have to hear about how Rankine is hurting, and what he’s going through, I’ll vomit.

Adelaide grow the f up!

Same. I was beginning to soften on them if we couldn't win it but they can gagf.

Victim complex is apparent from both club and supporters.

Hope they go out in straight sets.

Apparently not the first time Rankine has gone down this path against Collingwood either

Ah yes but again you'll find this is someone else's fault because something something provocation something finals

As per Tom Morris, a 5-week suspension but Adelaide refusing to accept what they said they'd accept - they now be claiming that finals are different to H&A games 🤦‍♀️

The Izak Rankine back and forth is likely to go into tomorrow.

The Crows have until late tonight to respond to the AFL's five-week suspension.

The club is doubling down on its contention that finals should be weighted differently to home & away games in this instance.

And even if the league holds firm on five games, Adelaide can then appeal and use other avenues to try to downgrade it.
