Question - What would Archie Roberts actually had to have done this season to get the award given his position and team situation?

Same position and height/weight as Daicos 2022. Stats very similar. Daicos had 53 kick ins, Roberts 23 so could argue he's won more ball. Daicos clean swept the award ahead of Sam De Koning and Jai Newcombe. Would Daicos be the clear favourite this year over Reid? Also not far off Sheezel's numbers who had 66 kick ins that year.

Media is all over Murphy Reid and I imagine he's got it in the bag based on the hype.

But if the question was which player has performed consistently close to the ceiling of what's possible in their role I'd say Roberts. Reid has shown us he can kick bags of 4 goals and that's a good game for a small forward. Every time he has 14 and 1 goal seems like it's actually underperforming but everyone goes nuts.

And if there was any consistency in their logic then Jye Amiss and Mitchito Owens should have easily won the award over Sheezel 2023.
You know what the answer is though. When you have multiple guys performing in contending teams vs a guy that’s performing in a bottom 4 team then you know which way it’s going to go. Not saying it’s right, but that’s just the way it is.

Murphy Reid’s score/goal assist numbers are top 10/15 in the entire league. He’s not getting the praise because he kicks a lot of goals, he’s getting it because he creates goals for his teammates at a level that hasn’t been seen by a first year player since Cyril Rioli.

Stats like that always emerge, just hate that there's never any consistency in how things get viewed and what people value. Makes the rising star a media popularity award where whichever stat gets pushed the hardest wins the award.

Mitch Owens had that stat of being the number 1 post-clearance contested ball winner competition wide while also kicking 26 goals. Amiss had most goals in 10 years. But media pushed hard for the guy racking up touches in a bad team that year. Roberts could have broken Sheezel's record if he had taken 3 more kick ins each match.

Also not sure what the update is on this stat but if it emerged that Roberts was also keeping his direct opponent to no goals then how would everyone view him?

Yeah he’s copped the bad end of the media this year. Being a late draft pick in his second year of football probably the reason why. Should be right up there in conversations.

Harvey Langford is incredible. Dont really care if he wins this dumb award.. hes going to be better then the rest of the field combined.
Melbourne supporters greatly overrate Langford.

He's had a good year but there are lots of question marks. But yes, that's typical of such a young player. He'll be a good player, but I don't see a great player.

Yeah he’s second after Reid for mine. Incredibly slept on.

Incorrect. Looks like a Bontempelli/Petracca hybrid. Going to be a superstar.

If Ashcroft has 20 and a goal tonight, surely he gets the nod
Levi has been outstanding, had a great start to the season then a down month or so in the middle of the season and is now putting up very good performances again.

Rising star is a Meh! award anyway, Lewis Taylor got it over Marcus Bontempelli in 2014.

I think he'll be a good player but the fawning by Melbourne supporters is over the top. And the comparisons with generational players is ridiculous.

He needs to improve his overhead marking. It was very strong at junior level, but hasn't been great at AFL level. I think he'll rectify this.

He's very one sided. Too one sided. Bontempelli can spear a beautiful pass on his right foot. Even that hack Jack Viney can kick on his right. I don't think Langford has made one this season. Sometimes you have to use your non-preferred.

He also hasn't been nearly as hard at the footy as I thought he would be. Lindsay has been hard at it, but not Langford. Some of his efforts have in fact been noticeably poor.

He's talent but has a long way to go. Which is fine. He's a teenager after-all.

But the salivating of him this year and ridiculous analysis of his output is misguided, not to mention the way too premature comparisons with greats of the game.

I think your last sentence sums it up perfectly. I reckon the criteria should be revisited and how it’s voted on.
