Nup, planting my flag. Top speed quick (enough), acceleration not quick
kick savage GIF by Major League Soccer

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

If we had pick 1 in 2024 and called out his name and he did this? There wouldn’t be any shred of disappointment. He’s EXACTLY what we needed and the scary thing is he’s has miles of room to improve.

That speed, and acceleration Snuffaluphagus he showed on the weekend was a bit scary for opposition tbh

I’m unsure on all the speed metrics, but Murphy sees things way before others that if there is an issue with speed it doesn’t matter because he’s already put distance between you.

Then there’s IQ speed. For someone who is only 19 he sees things happen seconds before others have even processed what’s going on.

He’s genuinely a freak.

It’s a small thing but apart from hitting the ball at pace, he delays that handball ever so slightly and lobs it near perfectly to allow 2 things.

The defender can’t intercept his pass. You can see it in slow motion that he handballs that behind him.

Also allows Switta to hit that at pace.

Do you know how many can’t weight a handball or would just fire it sideways and have it deflected?

His handballing game is elite levels.

Exactly. Just delays it an extra step and gives the receiver a yard on his man. Lovely to watch.

Posting this for the bit at 1:28 min. They're having a crack at English, fair enough, but the reason he couldn't get the ball was the smart play by Murphy deflecting it towards Young.

Haha yeah that was about all I noticed in that frame.
Granted for a big bloke English is a squib but Murph dawg was just too quick of mind there- which Tbf most players are compared to our boy

The other thing that hasnt been spoken about with Murph

Murph has got Pendlebury & yesterday Libba caught HTB with a 1 on 1 tackle late in 4th quarters at crucial moments.

Pendles one was with 5 mins to go at the MCG win and Libba as well very late.

2 warriors who have played 600 more games then murph combined and he has stood up and nailed them physically.

Both players are no slouches and not easy to get them caught HTB.

That was what I took from it apart from the obvious. In a split second he makes all the calculations and releases the handball so that Switta won’t have to break stride and there is no chance of an interception & he will be exactly poised for the 1&2 receive.

It’s football IQ of the highest level & you can’t teach it.

Interestingly one of the few players who I constantly referenced as putting perfect “weight” on their disposal was Cyril Rioli. The same spatial awareness and ability to calculate where the ball needs to be to ensure a continuous forward formation of players in optimal position and the skill to execute whether that be a chip or a flat fast ball.

Players to have 20+ goals and 30+ score assists in their debut season:
  • Cyril Rioli
  • MURPHY REID

Players to have 20+ goals, 20+ goal assists and 30+ score assists in their debut season (during the home and away campaign, excluding finals)
  • Cyril Rioli - 20 goals, 21 goal assists and 36 score assists
  • MURPHY REID - 24 goals, 20 goal assists and 36 score assists
Also worth noting Rioli did this in a team that would go on to win the premiership.

I can’t believe the tigers with 4 picks ahead of us, overlooked this guy, he was a lifelong supporter of theirs as well. Their loss is our gain, kid is going to be an inaugural Freo premiership player.
A 2x brownlow medal winner called Nat Fyfe grew up a tigers fan was drafted by Fremantle after the Tigers had 2 x picks already.

Though one of them was Dusty Martin so that's excusable.

Pick 19 was Richmond's and they took Ben Griffiths.

Freo had pick 20

Well…. Technically so could Murph 😉

It's beautiful. Pay attention to how much quicker he reacts to the drop of the ball than the Dogs player beside him.

They both stop and prop at the same time, then Reid is already off while the Dogs player is still trying to decide which way to shift his bodyweight.
