Geelong and GWS “home” finals

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Hello,

I’m new to the game and something doesn’t make any sense to me…

Can someone explain why Geelong can’t play a home final at their home ground, which holds 40k, yet GWS get to play a home final at their home ground which only holds 25k.
I think Geelong play at least 7 games at the MCG every year which is 6 more games that oppo teams ever play at Kardinia Park.
The bottom line is that the MCG is Geelong's second home ground and that Kardinia Park is unsuitable for finals due to capacity and the unsymetrical ground dimensions.

5 of 23 H&A games actually. Given Geelong are forced to host finals there, I think getting to visit the venue 5 times beforehand is reasonable. For clubs like Collingwood or Richmond, they get 14 trial runs each season.

Back in the 2000-2007 era, i.e before we started winning premierships, we played once or twice at the G all year and then were still expected to "host" finals there. The club got on with it anyway.

It is unbelievable the amount of sooking opposition supporters such as yourself engage in despite all of these facts.

Population
Home finals only if your city area has a population of more than 600,000 people

GC ✅
Western Sydney ✅
Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth ✅

Shithole west of Melbourne with cigar shaped dump of a ground ❌
We don't need home finals or the thousand legs up Gold Coast require just to scrape into finals after 15 seasons.

Let me preface this by saying I actually agree - the Saints and Dogs should host at Marvel if they want.

I will also preface it by saying on the record, it doesn’t bother me anymore and to be honest never really did.

But it’s the same city and a few kms up the road. Geelong isn’t in Melbourne. That’s the primary difference. It’s close, yes, but it’s not the same city.

If the Steelers still had their own team in the nrl no one would bat an eyelid if they hosted a final in Wollongong. Same with Newcastle albeit it’s about 45 minutes further away.
Far more difficult to get to a place like Accor stadium from Newcastle than it is the MCG from Geelong.

Geelong are very familiar with the MCG much more than your opponents Brisbane. You have a definate home ground advantage next week.

Where do people get this from?

2025 - 5 games
2024 - 6 games (play one final)
2023 - 5 games
2022 - 5 games (plus 3 finals)
2019 - 5 games (plus 3 finals)
2018 - 5 games (plus 1 final)
2017 - 4 games
2016 - 4 games (plus 2 finals)
2015 - 5 games
2014 - 4 games (plus 2 finals)
2013 - 4 games (plus 2 finals)
2012 - 4 games (plus 1 final)
2011 - 5 games (plus 3 finals)
2010 - 7 games (plus 3 finals)

Throughout their history, the Cats have only played 7 home and away games at the MCG in one season, which occurred in 2010 during the Kardina Park redevelopment. In most years, they play 4 to 5 games at the MCG, all against their co-tenants. And with the opening of their 40,000-seat stadium, it’s likely that the Cats will reduce their MCG appearances to just 3 or 4 games as they focus on maximising use out of new stadium.

Here’s something interesting. Of the 21 MCG finals the Cats have played, 16 were non GF’s where Geelong qualified as host (i.e. finished higher up on the ladder)

2024 v BL (2 games at the MCG)
2022 v BL (2 games at the MCG)
2022 v Coll (14 games at the MCG)
2019 v Rich (13 games at the MCG)
2019 v WCE (3 games at the MCG)
2019 v Coll (14 games at the MCG)
2017 v Syd (4 games at the MCG)
2017 v Rich (11 games are MCG)
2016 v Syd (4 games at the MCG)
2016 v Haw (11 games at the MCG)
2014 v NM (2 games at the MCG)
2013 v PA (1 game at the MCG)
2012 v Frem (2 games at the MCG)
2011 v WCE (1 game at the MCG)
2011 v Haw (11 games at the MCG)
2010 v Frem (0 games at the MCG)
2010 v St K (2 games at the MCG)

In 6 of those games they are giving away significant home ground advantage (2 v Coll, 2 v Haw and 2 v Rich). Whist in 3 others, Geelong essentially played neutral games (v Syd and WCE in 2016, 17 and 19)

Next week Geelong (4 games) will be playing Brisbane (3 games) at a venue which is essentially a neutral venue.

Brisbane have played at the MCG 7 times over the past 2 years, compared to 12 times for Geelong.

A "real" home final advantage is Fremantle hosting Gold Coast. They have played there 25 times over the past 2 years, compared to 3 times for Gold Coast.

It is laughably easy to dismiss and correct every point you make.

Thank you. He generally just makes stuff up or wildly exaggerates. Next he will try to deflect in some way.

No point sooking about it. The way Chris Scott sooks about it must be negative on the team. If you want to win a grand final, they play it at the MCG.

No sooking. All 4 of Geelong's flags this century have been won away from home and there's no issues with that. It doesn't mean the MCG is some personal fortress. When we "host" teams like Richmond and Collingwood there we face a stronger familiarity disadvantage than the one you have highlighted for Brisbane compared to Geelong. In other words you've argued yourself into a corner.

AFL has an agreement with the MCC, that states a minimum of games be played at the MCG.

This is correct and as a result, Geelong are forced to play home games at the MCG so that minnow clubs can sell of their home games interstate to make a dollar.

Hawthorn should be thanking Geelong.

The AFL aren't gonna change it so Chris Scott needs to stop whinging, he does it every year.

You're the only one whinging: about Geelong. Some time for self-reflection is well overdue, lest you look like a hypocrite.
Lol. You can have your opinion but the constant whinging and playing the victim by Scott is unbecoming for an AFL coach, especially when Geelong are the most advantaged team in the league.

Now this is called whinging and playing the victim. Mirror time.
Do you think he remembers 2019 when Richmond were gifted the last 10 games of the year at the MCG?
Pretty sure they played like 16 games at the G that year.

It’s hilarious when posters can’t look in their own backyard.

If the game was played at Kardinia Park, what is realistic number of tickets that would be made available to Lions members? 5,000 (12.5% of capacity)? 10,000 (25%)? If it were 10,000 it leaves 30,000 for the (according to GPT) 29,255 members who reside in the Geelong region plus the 19,975 who live in the Melbourne area; total being 49,230). I’m sure all those members would love to have to go in a ballot having a 60% chance (being roughly a $1.65 hope in a 100% market), rather than being guaranteed a ticket at the G 🤷‍♂️
As many as Brisbane fans could get before it sold out in minutes. There aren't limits.

Becsuse the MCG is your home final.

Also Geelong want the MCG but pretend they want the peanut ground which encourages socks like yourself to post things like this.
