Who cares? We played nice in doing unbalanced trades with Brad Hill, Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis and then recently Tom Mitchell and O’Meara with the guise of it paying off with good will down the track. It never did. It doesn’t mean shit. Look after your own.

Thank you for asking this and I think it’s a good question.

My reading of the situation is that Merrett asked to leave in his exit interview. From there, you told him no and then had the board put out a message that he wouldn’t be traded.

Here’s how everything should have transpired instead.

Exit interview, he tells you he wants to go. You tell him you understand, you wish he wouldn’t, but you’ll try to facilitate for the right price. Require radio silence from him and nothing but gratitude to the club for facilitating this. You want the best price for him.

Brownlow and Crichton happens. He thanks the club but tells everyone he is looking for the next step in his journey. You appoint your new leadership team at the Crichton to take you forward and for the fans to get behind.

Trade week comes and he sits silently while you facilitate a move with any finals contender for the best price. Given it looks like he is playing ball, you now have multiple trade partners for someone who isn’t looking like a distressed asset.

This is all that needed to be done.

Would be a pretty sad outcome for the player and club if he doesn't attend the BnF

Merrett has given 11 years of his best. Essendon have given 11 years of failed promises. So he should just give his entire football career to a club which has let him down over and over and over?

We made an offer. WCE thought they would be smart and get better. They didnt. They took less. After screwing around and flailing for a week.

Its like when GCS played hardball on us getting O'Meara. Our original offer ended up better than the final offer they accepted a week later.

Its not our fault other clubs are terribly run.

I don’t care where Merrett goes, but it’s not certain he goes to hawthorn.

Hawthorn probably only club who will get their coach to meet an opposition player during a finals series.

Also you don’t think Merrett will watch this finals series with a keen eye?
You don’t think if hawthorn or another team wins a flag or gets serious injuries or pumped it won’t change his decision?

I’d suspect Merrett will want to meet with a lot of coaches amongst the finals.

There is so much water to go under the bridge. Allen met with Mitchell too, but he chose Brisbane.

At the moment though hawthorn having Carlton’s pick and their future picks it makes sense for the bones of a trade.
