Recommitted Buku Khamis [FA 2026] - requested a trade to Carlton, didn't get there

Let’s be fair on kennedy - you subbed him in the 2nd quarter of a final and encouraged him to look around.

There was nothing left for us to accept as you used everything (justifiably) in the Curnow trade.

It’s a shame for you guys as you could now really use him in your forward line, but what exactly were you expecting us to accept?
Pick 40 a week ago was fair enough for depth, florent is a prime example of what a fringe 22 player who has fallen out of favour is worth and we got him for a pick in the 50s next year.

But the counter factual is that there's an expectation that pick 31 would get a game for us?

We're gunning for a flag next year and are not under salary cap pressure. Pick 31 in a weak draft is kind of meaningless, it's not that much more of a value-add in our chances of winning a flag next year if we didn't have him.

O'Farrell at 40 last year would have got a game for you

Says who - he has missed out on a five year deal no guarantees anyone would offer him the same contract again.

The opportunity was for 2026 to strut his stuff.. in 2027 we have OFarrell returning so no need for him.
The fact that an AFL club can elect to keep you in the reserves for the whole season in a risk you take when you sign a guaranteed contract for guaranteed money in the past though.

When Khamis took that risk when he signed a two-year deal at the end of the 2024 season, he could have easily asked for a one-year contract but didn't want to because clearly he thought the risk of a bad season and being delisted was greater than the risk of a good season, wanting to move, and not being able to (as eventuated). He can't have it both ways, he mitigated his own risk.

41 was a fair offer, but obviously no longer available when you traded it for Chesser. We wanted the early 30s pick to try and package it with our own pick to get up the board. Pick 41 wouldn’t have allowed us to do that.

Carlton gave the dogs a best 22 mid for pick 40, the dogs refused to give up a defender who couldnt get a game despite having no one down back for pick 40.

Now before it gets really twisted, are you telling me with a straight face you would trade pick 31 for 41+50?
Carlton pushed Kennedy out, it means absolutely nothing for this deal. Anyways it’s done now, good luck for next year.

He might choose to leave next year, that's his right. In the meantime, we get another year out of him, and we get the same 2026 third rounder that was offered this year.
You won't get a 3rd rounder for him next year, clubs will wait for delisted free agency period and get him cheaper contract wise as a lifeline opportunity.

Schrodinger's Buku - a player so good that he's worth Carlton offering a multi-year contract yet so bad that he'll be worth a delisting by the Dogs next year, and both can be true at the same time.

What did we offer him 2 years? Do you think the dogs are offering him a new contract if he spends most of the year in the vfl next season? We probably don't even look at him next year as HOF will be back from injury and Dean will have had 12 months into the system.

We wanted to replace mcgovern because his attitude is crap while the other two develop for another year, like i said earlier in this thread offer mcgovern 1 year and move on and next year the need for a stop gap will cease to exsist.

All stubbornly holding onto him will achieve is increasing his chances to finish his afl career next season, I get you guys probably needed to save the depth but he at least would have been able to play for his future if he moved.

Do you not understand your contradictory logic at play here?

Why would you offer him a two year contract if you were not prepared to have him on your list, in two years' time?

If you think his form is so bad next year to not merit even a one-year deal by your club at the end of next year, why bother trying to recruit him at all?

Do you not know how to read?

We wanted him for depth while HOF comes back from a knee and Dean comes in from the draft, he probably would have played 20 games in 26 and 10-15 in 27.

Now were forced to put games into the kids, makes no logical sense to start protecting them after they have already been thrown in the deep end.

So even though you expect him to be good enough 10-15 games, you wouldn't take a look at him though if you did you would give him 10-15 games? Huh?
If he was already on the list acting as a buffer to allow the kids to develop through the vfl yes, if the kids have already been forced to play 15 games in the afl next year what the hell is the point of recruiting buku to give them more time to develop at that point?

How do you not grasp that the ship has sailed?

Then why offer him a two-year contract? Offer him a one-year contract for enough money, more than his existing amount at the Dogs, that he still requests a trade.

What you're saying literally does not make sense by virtue of the fact that your club still offered him a two-year deal

Why is this so hard for you to understand my man it's quite simple.

You give him a 2 year contract to protect the kids in 2026 and phase out through 2027, why would you bring a player in for 1 year in 2027 to phase them out of the side and replace them with kids?

McGovern will remain on this list and do the job buku was targeted for, if the kids still need half a season protection you aren't spending huge cap space to get buku to play vfl for half a year you just give McGovern another +1 deal then delist.

Bit of a crappy move by Bulldogs. Zero chance of playing next year

It’s Wade Dersken all over again

Carlton could have traded pick 31 for him and a future 3rd today, but chose to send it to Sydney to get a better future pick after getting him to request a trade there. Yet we are the bad guys for keeping a contracted player who we have offered a contract extension to also. The mind boggles where some people come to these conclusions....

You now have to trade contracted players to wherever they want to go, for whatever the other team offers, yep makes sense. The AFL trade / free agency landscape is so broken.

According to our list manager we’ve been aggressively trying to re-sign him all year. Cheers Carlton!
