Apologies for any inconvenience. We will try to find a replacement.
Yeah if you’re meeting with the players and the coach and his wife then you are likely making a commitment to get players out and pay up. Like we have done with Neale and Dunkley etc.
what's happened to Merret?
Butters would be handsomely remunerated in a team he would be leading (either by title or by status) back up the ladder
Hawks fans think that Merrett relationship with Essendon being untenable is helping lower his trade value.
If Merrett and Essendon relationship can’t be fixed, and hawthorn don’t pony up in the trade, Merrett might prefer to play at another club rather than Essendon creating a bidding war for him.
I don’t think this is the case but I don’t see how all of sudden hawks are gonna get him cheap because of a couple of comments from players.
Sam Mitchell and family literally met both of Allen and Harley Reid and their relevant family members (less so Reid).

And yetJust like Melbourne and Petracca, I expect something like this:
Club statement: 'Zac expressed to us his desire to win premierships, something that we expect from our captain. Zac understands that he is a required player and he is committed to setting standards and helping the Essendon football club return up the ladder. He is excited for the upcoming pre-season'
It is lowering his price, because questioning his character, his leadership, his buy in is doing exactly that, which is why I think you will not see Essendon or its players fire any more broadsides at the Merrett camp.Hawks fans think that Merrett relationship with Essendon being untenable is helping lower his trade value.

Neither of whom requested a move to Hawthorn. What’s your point?
You literally just said that if your family has met the coaches, you’ve made a commitment to them. Neither us nor Merrett have committed to each other. His agent leaked it. Onus isn’t on Hawthorn to get a deal done at all costs. It’s for Essendon to extricate themselves from this shitshow of their own making.
other than the first paragraph I agree with you. None of that is lowering his price. Both Essendon and hawthorn know what you’re getting with Merrett. It is lowering his price, because questioning his character, his leadership, his buy in is doing exactly that, which is why I think you will not see Essendon or its players fire any more broadsides at the Merrett camp.
Bidding wars are a fantasy continually dreamt up by fans losing a player. They don’t happen
No player manager worth a pinch of shit wants their player put through that sort of indecisive landscape.
Merrett will(has) have his eye on where he wants to go. His manager will work in the background to understand how this trade could work and will eventually declare where he wants to go when they feel like the trade is completely workable.
They will be an advocate for both clubs involved as well as the player, working on making sure that the trade will eventuate.
In the context of the Hawthorn bros comments in this thread yes. There are more than one Melbourne club competing who have capital to get Merrett. If the Hawks are as keen as the Hawks bros in here suggest, then it is laughable that you think you’re not making a commitment to him to pay up to get him out.
You think Merrett would be blowing things up if Hawthorn weren’t committal lol?
You’re mistaking interest with commitment.
One is in our control, the other isn’t.
We had a meeting. We didn’t leak it days out from a final. His manager did in response to the Essendon board deliberately (and unnecessarily) putting out that he wouldn’t be traded at all costs.
There’s a price for everyone. Essendon fans might think it’s around the 2 1st rounders mark, at which point we’ll likely say no thanks and leave Essendon to pick up the pieces of their own making.
2 firsts is the base of fair value…that isn’t overs.
A commitment doesn’t mean you’ll 100% get the player as you can’t anticipate what the other club will do. But it does mean you’re not going to be trying to ‘win the trade’ and will have to pony up to get it done.
This looks similar to when Footscray slagged off Stringer on the way out and then thought you could then ask for top whack.Hawks fans think that Merrett relationship with Essendon being untenable is helping lower his trade value.

Provided Essendon get fair compensation. I think it’ll be a win/win for both clubs.I was prob a tad harsh by saying that isn’t the mark. I expect it’ll be pick 8 and the Worpel compensation pick (19), plus something else thrown in as a sweetener (F2).
Essendon have to give their fans some red meat to celebrate the “win” after all.
Comparing the Merrett situation to stringers is laughable. This looks similar to when Footscray slagged off Stringer on the way out and then thought you could then ask for top whack.
Essendon have had a tantrum and shown their hand. Merrett can't stay.

It’s rare for a bidding war, but if hawthorn and Essendon can’t come up with a deal, Merrett might rather end up at another club over returning to Essendon. I doubt it’s the case, but if the relationship has soured as much as hawks fans say it has it necessarily doesn’t help your bidding power.
Matthew Jelley I’m not sure why that’s funny?
Hawthorn don’t have to trade for Merrett, they’ll give up what they deem fair, and what they think they have cover for losing.
Meek ain’t it.
They couldn't be further apart. This looks similar to when Footscray slagged off Stringer on the way out and then thought you could then ask for top whack.

1. 2 frp is the bones of the trade. Maybe a steak knives player. If you can find another club that will meet your demands of two first round draft picks and a super star player…… Go for it!
1. I do not think any of the other clubs fans sprouting that B.S would support their own club paying that for Merrett. Nor do I think there clubs would do it.
2. I do not believe Merrett or his manager will agree to it.
3. Remember you want to attract future talent and they’re watching how you treat your players, even a disgruntled captain.
4. I suspect the Hawks will be the only the team willing to pay a little overs in compensation as ZM has nominated them.
Good luck!
They couldn't be further apart.
Dogs wanted Stringer gone
Dons don't want Merrett gone
If Hawks have been working on this for a couple of months then they have the plan to get the trade done. It won't be 3 firsts like Essendon fans want, but it wont be a couple of Box Hill players and a pick either.
1. 2 frp is the bones of the trade. Maybe a steak knives player.
2. So hawthorn don’t pay fair value Essendon say no. What happens to Merrett?
He either stays or he decides that he’d rather go to x club rather than back to bombers.
3. This isn’t a threat, because it would be Merrett breaking the contract. It’s also the managers role to ensure that the bones of a deal is in place before a player of the ilk of Merrett nominates a club.
4. Merrett has not nominated a club and is still meeting with pies and dogs that we know of.
would happily take 9, F2 and hurstwaite. move on. of course essendon being essendon won't.
