Oppo Camp Non Geelong football (AFL) discussion 2025, Part 2

One game I've seen not mentioned yet is the 2014 Qualifying Final. Maybe QFs don't matter
Na that matters, it just doesn’t hurt as they had our measure that year and were only top 4 because of a Hell of a lot of Joel Selwood heroics.

I actually thought we did a great job that night and it was exciting to see young players like Guthrie coming on

Who's going to even be playing at that date?

Either it will be a bunch of nobodies, or the game will be at half rat power because everyone treats it as a glorified practice match.

Who will even go to it and watch? Probably a stupid question because people will attend the match.

For me, State of Origin is gone and has been since 1999. Its not like in the NRL where the prestige is in order:

1. State of Origin.
2. NRL Premiership.

In the AFL the prestige is:

1. Premiership.

There is no place for State of Origin in the AFL anymore, its well and truly run its race apart from marquee matches (EJ Whitten Legends game). I can not understand the big push for it to return.

It's difficult to make it mean anything when half the talent comes from Vic to the other team is just everyone else.

You can't really generate tribalism for the shared identity between guys from Tasmania and the Northern Territory but not Victoria.

Still, put 2 dream teams together, have them do no practice or strategy and by extension have no real defensive structure, and you're gonna have a massive classy looking shoot out spectacle

Cats, Hawks, Lions, Pies make up 44/100 PF spots this century.

And something that makes the 17 grand finals this century featuring at least one of these 4 teams & those 44 PF spots is this

How was the Indigenous All-Stars vs Fremantle received earlier this year?

Would seem that this takes the place of that next year

THIS. Exactly this.

The paradox of State of Origin is that having it as a regular fixture only makes sense if it's more prestigious than club footy, otherwise it's just a novelty game. But the problem with that is, having it be more prestigious than club footy is an extremely undesirable outcome. We don't want to see State of Origin is become the highest prestige trophy. It would be a bad thing if that happened. The NRL paradigm freaking sucks and we should consider ourselves lucky as AFL fans that that dynamic doesn't exist in our sport. Who wants to see the AFL premiership reduced to second-tier status? Absolutely no one. I certainly would never in a million years care more about Victoria than I do about Geelong, and the same is true for supporters of every other club. So it can't work. Truly a redundant and outdated concept and I hope it fails miserably next year.

And dont get me wrong, the State of Origin in the NRL set up works very well and it has a massive following in Australia and thats fine. The state of Origin in the NRL is big and fair enough too.

But it doesnt work in the AFL anymore. It was scrapped for a reason - lack of interest and clubs not wanting their players to get hurt during State of Origin games. The priority or should I say biggest priority for AFL clubs is the Premiership.

Would prefer to see the international rules brought back. That at least has something going on.
State of Origin was fun to see superstars play together back in the day, but agree it’s done its dash. We don’t need this taste of nostalgia.

I didnt mind the International Rules series. At least it gave the AFL players a chance to represent their country (Australia) and play with players from other AFL teams. More prestigious I think than State of Origin matches.

They should bring back the International Rules series - not sure why it hasn't been back. It hasn't been back in quite a few years.

I'll take a limited player that can kick 71 goals in a year any day
Sure he kicked 71 goals, but only had 8 goal assists, wasn't great in the scoring chains and was a passenger for a lot of both finals because his play style isn't great when he isn't getting silver service i50s.

Richmonds best (ugh) was when they had 2 big forwards who either kicked goals or created for others. Hardwicks system requires forwards with some degree of flexibility.

But if GCS had a second decent KPF, then Kings goal return drops from 71 likely down into the 40s-50s as another KPF scores goals, but he lacks the skills to bump up the goal assists and score involvements which means when he has those games where the ball isn't hitting him lace out what else can he provide?

And I don't think King can evolve his game to be more involved, so unless Dimma has new and better plans in mind the risk if you back in King as your only KPF is what happened last night, because Long and Humphrey are too small and they had to roll Mac Andrew in there to solve the forward line issues at times in both finals (which bailed them out against Freo).
