Why?

We missed out on top 4 by 2 games let alone the top 8 by 1

Wilkie makes our team significantly better
I'd say we could have won at least 2 of those games by not giving up run ons out of the midfield and not playing a high defensive press (at least at times to stop the run ons).

I'm not sure a new full back would have made a difference?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Wilkie but he's contracted and will be expensive in a trade.

I'm also aware we gave up 2 recent draft hands (albeit I wouldn't change a thing about Darcy or Marra (at the time!)) that seriously unbalanced our list.

Was only good late drafting & recruiting that made it a little easier to swallow with the likes of Freija and JOD coming into the squad around the same time.

Anyhow, like I said, over to you Sam.

It’s so crazy seeing these coach combos in Vic juniors. My U14 coach in WA was a mechanical fitter. The “assistants” (random dads who helped out) were teachers and plumbers.
My u14s coach was a Dole Bludger while the Team Manager was a Lithuanian Prostitute with an eye patch and wooden leg.

agree with you but technically we have stuffed up our picks with Smith, and Jamarra that were high draft picks and I would hate to see another high pick go to waste when we can keep adding decent quality youth
I don’t see the relevance of Smith and Jamarra in this case, but if you’re risk-averse and worried about wasting another high draft pick, wouldn’t investing it in a proven, durable defender of good character be less risky than speculating on an unproven kid in the draft?

But thats the thing we no longer have an unbalanced list Richards/Naughty/Kennedy/English/Truck/Dale are the mid 20s guys

Sanders/Hynes/Dolan/Freijah/Croft/JOD/Buss ect early 20s showing a lot of promise

Smith/Jaques/Sellwood/Walker performing great in the 2s ready to make the jump next year

We have enough coming through that we can use a first to get the team that is also built for the now without costing the future because we already have the parts in place for then as well

Sanders would be worth considerably more than Wilkie, and I want him to stay. One of our best young players ⭐

Is he worth considerably more than Wilkie? We're in dire need for good key back for a win now while in the window so i'd argue Wilkie is more important than Sanders who is surplus to our needs RIGHT now

Unless the Saints are going to splash their warchest at Sanders and convince him to sign a long-term deal, I highly doubt they'd entertain a trade for him given he probably won't sign a contract for more than a couple years, anyway. He'd be mad not to leverage his potential value to a Tasmanian team for a big contract.

Going to have to give up something to get something we want right? Also will Sanders stick around when Tassie comes around and he's still not playing as a full time mid?

I doubt it. Has any team ever done that? I doubt the Wilkie deal will happen but if it does it will most likely be for some combination of our first and future first and bit part exchanges. I honestly can't think of many instances when clubs have traded out a significant player they wanted to keep to facilitate another trade.

At minimum we should see Buku, Duryea, Jones, Scott and Poulter off the list. None of them are taking us forward. Coffield too if we trade in a medium or KPD.

Players like Freijah, Davidson, Gallagher and Smith show that you can turn over your depth with third round picks and improve your list. We shouldn’t be scared to do that.

I’d love to see us add 3-4 athletic, competitive kids in this year’s draft. Ideally defenders and midfielders.
Gallagher? Please!!

You mean like how Oliver and Petracca walked away last year? I remember when that happened. Darned player contracts.

Yeah like those two. Except when you leave out the context as to why they didn't get to leave Melbourne. Like Petracca just coming off a severe season ending injury, which led to some doubt about his playing future. Oliver having mental health and alleged substance abuse issues that saw him all over the news that pre-season. Or the extraordinary lengths and prices of their freshly minted contract extensions, that run at $1.7 and >$1million respectively..

Extensions that extend out through to the end of this decade! This is why Oliver had literally no takers at all last year and it's why the jungle drums are beating around Petracca once again. Lets see how this trade period pans out for Petracca, Merrett and Curnow before thinking that contracts have any real integrity when it comes to players wanting out.

Or do you mean Adam Treloar and Brodie Grundy being dumped whilst contracted? "Worthless from a clubs point of view."
Yeah. Like I said contracts are worthless.

Their only value in the current environment is to set the floor on where the player lands next.

Depends what you define worth as, on an open market Sanders would be worth more, as he’s a lot younger and a future star of the comp.

Wilkie would be worth more to us right now though, as he fills a need.

If Wilkie does req a trade, I’m confident we could get it done without trading someone of Sanders caliber anyway.

I see what you did there. Make him the Saints problem, yes.

Well, not if you only get 2 years of elite performance if that. Let's not forget he has played in a very defensive structure under Lyon that allows him to use his traits. I'm worried the way we structure up wouldn't suit him or anyone playing in our back half.

He was in the AA squad under Brett Ratten and in the team the year after under Ross

He is the system
