Could mean something regarding departures, but even without departures the age of our group means it's an area we need to add a prospect likely to come on quicker than Macarthy. I certainly don't think that Buller is bankable or an automatic in next year's best team - just another potential bloke who will give short term depth with the potential to become more than that in both the now and the future.
I think it's also about having a spread of ages in our talls
West and Howes are kids, and McCarthy too when we draft him.
Smit is 20 and Steene has not long turned 22.
Buller is 24, so he fills an age gap between our kids and our 30 somethings.
BBB will soon be 29 and the skipper turns 30 in January.

Both Cox and Mihocek are without contracts for next year. There’s a real scenario where both are gone opening up two spots in the 23.
IIRC, Cox doesn't mind being used as needed.
He plays when needed, he has height to bring the ball to the ground for the smalls to go to work, if the ruck duties go back to jumping, then he's good for that jumping ruck role and as the second ruck near and in finals.
Not playing every senior game will help his longevity until we find a good replacement.
One more year is a smart move. Who else has his height? No one, it's a weapon on its own, even just to take the biggest defender and free up our other fwds.
There's a few reasons for his inclusion in games.
Cox has an aggressive attitude when he wants and having his parents watching in finals, well, that just speaks for itself.
I have no qualms with Brody securing more money, his body is banged up and as others have said, he started late and is looking to secure his future. He's done us proud and been an absolute workhorse.

Really think we should have a look at Jack Steele if we want to have another crack next year. What would he cost?

Who are we recruiting to replace Pendles Sidey Crisp and Titch in the midfield
Titch - Long
Pendles - Perryman
Crisp - DeMattia/Allan? Someone not yet recruited, Butters?
Sidey - Allan/Steele
IMO, Allan might play more middle next year to get trained up by Pendles.

Titch hardly needs replacing, and Crisp is years away.

I would imagine Perryman is slated to play more midfield as the others move out & Parker takes his backline spot. McCreery also seems suited for more midfield time, as HH comes into the side
Yes that will paper over the cracks but who will join Nick and Ned in the midfield when the golden generation have departed ? Hope we can find a solution

I think age is relevant for the oldies, but for those with 5+ years ahead of them, it's AFL readiness - which is 19 if you're Logan Morris, but can be 24 for other blokes or never for a heap of the KPFs who make lists. I've never seen Buller play, but late season reports and stats suggest that he should at least be AFL relevant depth straight away and hopefully for the 5 year timeframe which most of our planning would revolve around.

Given we were actively hunting Rowell, I don’t think we’ll die quietly

he's an interesting one.

if we are looking for midfield grunt he's an elite tackler (better than anyone at Collingwood) and 101 clearances would be no 2 at Collingwood.

he also played 3 less games.

I would definitely take him.

For these reasons - we have the Ferrari, we need to have strong bodied tacklers. Long is 1, we can do with another.

Really like what we're doing with recruiting young key talls into our system, finally!!
Clearly to me West should make it.
Howes has potential.
Hoping Steene & Smit can advance further in 2026 and maybe debut at some stage...
Buller could be starting 23 early next year and succeed Brody if he leaves..
McCarthy could be the pick of the bunch in about 3 years.

I won’t bother mentioning who started the Jack Steele rumour… but would we have a look? Think he could add something.

For a fair price I’d be more than happy with recruiting Jack Steele

It's one of the more ridiculous things. I'd love to see Stepho get his shit together and become the player he should have been - but it just is no chance of occuring at the Pies.

I’ve been not so secretly wanting Stephenson back for ages lol

Pretty sure I’ve posted about it last year

I still have belief that he can be what we hoped he’d be back in 18/19. 25 now, so should have a better head on his shoulders and surely would have learned a bunch of lessons over his time.

His absence and subsequent desire to return to the point of taking it upon himself to approach clubs directly would indicate dedication and application won’t be an issue either

Caminiti was also mentioned as a possible key position recruit recently. Has ability and might be worth looking at

I was starting to think I was the only one. He's a good defender who can go forward. He has steadily improved every year. I think his best is still ahead of him

I like the Jack Buller idea. Really like how he clunks marks!
Members, Checkers, D-Mac and Coxy are all over 30.
I really like the look of West and Howes, so to get a guy like Buller, we can leave those 2 to develop as forwards, where we can have Buller go up as 2nd ruck, particularly while Steene and Illiro still need time.
a bargain basement pickup that could mean a lot for the team list!

He was electric. Could have been a champion. But the hub rumours included Josh and Jaidyn sharing a room and Peter Daicos calling the club to say get that dickhead away from my son. We're the least likely club.

I thought Smit looked good down back and would be worth persisting with

I'm surprised that we're going after Buller when McStay, West and Howes can't get a game. Hope Checkers is staying but this seems to point to him leaving.
West and Howes kinda irrelevant. I'd assume he's being targeted as a forward/ruck. We have McStay (who's not much of a ruck - tho Buller hasn't done much there either) and Cox. Then the younger players who aren't quite ready.

Buller makes plenty of sense as a Cox replacement. At worst a forward/ruck backup. Possibly a starter. Mason is turning 35 in March and has kicked 2 goals in 9 games (Buller 11 in 9). Whether Mason wants to play on or not, it makes sense to want a younger option.

Forward/ruck is the one position we have been weak at this year (both starter and backup). It is the most urgent position to be looking at. Buller isn’t the answer to elevate our best 23 (as far as I know), but seems a better backup option at least. Certainly younger, and that's a start.

If he had Daicosian drive he would have been a perennial AA type

If I'm Smit and or Steene I would be see the Buller news and be busting my a$$ over summer. Likely that one of them wont be around end of next year. They can't carry 3 rucks and a ruck/forward.
