i reckon 2 things need to happen for us to get Robey

1 Essendon get band 2 compo for Draper rather than band 1 so don’t have as much to trade up with

2 we begin spreading vicious rumours that Robey is a mummas boy / hates Perth

Assuming you mean F1 from Carlton, the only issue will be what the specific changes to F/S and Academy matching are for next year.

Cal Twomey suggested that to match a bid at pick 1 for the 2026, you might need something like pick 2 and 12 (doubt it'll be this extreme, but sounds like you'll need first round picks to match first round bids), which means Carlton can't afford to trade out their F1 this early in preparation to match a bid for Walker.

I think a simple solution is to remove the discount and only allow 2 x picks to match any bid. That ensures at least 1 x pick must be reasonably close to the bid in order to match the points. Problem solved.

So we need to hope Cody Walker is bid on at #1, meaning in the above system Carlton would need to use #6 and #9 to get him. Or #4 and #13. Their lowest starting pick would need to be #6 to reach 3,000 x points via 2 x picks.

If Tanner Armstrong is bid on at #12, we'd need to use #25 and #26. Or #17 and #38 etc...

So whilst it's good for Carlton that Walker remains available to them, the days of getting him for 3-4 x picks in the 30's as the Pies did with Daicos etc... are long gone.

When Sharp's traits are as obvious as they are, it's easier to find players who you predict to have higher upside, and thus rank them as better talents as Sharp. I think it's pretty much common consensus that Sharp is a player with a high floor, but low ceiling. Anyone who has a higher ceiling could very easily become rated higher than him if they prove to have a decent floor as well.

Sharp and Robey = Complete midfield with excellent forward capability.

Then pick up outside runners later and trade/ draft for them.

If we split one of the picks then we go hard at fast runners with skill.

We may have already done that with McAuliffe. He looks at the level, can he play somewhere else or is he a 70-80% CBA mid?

And secondly what's the plan with Smillie? He looks a 70-80% CBA mid.

Sharp definitely is a CBA mid.

Would leave **** all for Lalor, Hotton and the other pick. Think we go more x factor/versatile guys

If we get the Dogs pick which is a pipe dream but hey we got pick 2 from north ... We should spend it on Jevan Phillipou. He could be anything if he is developed well

Only situation where I'd want to keep both 3 and 4 is to take Robey and Duursma.

Otherwise pick Robey at 3, then slide 4 down for ~7-10 plus an F1, and take 1 of Grlj, Cumming, Sharp, X.Taylor

The only realistic suitor I can see for a pick split is GC, which would have to be pick 14 (after Allen compo) and F1 for pick 4. Maybe they throw in Rosas too.

They could get St Kilda, Carlton, Dogs pick for Flanders

FUTURE PICK PLANNING TAKES OFF​

CLUBS are already planning how many future picks they will need to secure at this year's Trade Period to have them in a strong position to match father-son and Academy bids at the 2026 draft and beyond after the League's new rules were conveyed on Monday.

AFL.com.au revealed on Monday the AFL had decided against a draft 'lockout' for clubs with tied players, however had decided to dramatically tighten up the ability to match bids on top talents.

Clubs will only be able to match bids using two picks, rather than the indefinite number that is currently allowed, while there will also be a grading system of access for top four or top eight teams on the ladder.

Club chief executives were told on Monday by the League that they would get full details on the new rules next week before the start of the exchange period.

It has left clubs pondering how they can find extra early picks for next year for those with potential top players, and how the tougher rules will impact their plans.

The AFL will also deliver an assistance package to West Coast next week before the Trade Period begins, with extra rookie access and selections (up to four) considered likely, with the AFL also weighing giving the Eagles a pick they have to trade. – Callum Twomey
