AFL Silver Membership Waitlist Number Part 2

Has anyone been penalised for transferring their membership, or know of someone?

What was the punishment?
My partner sold her tickets in 2019, one of them got caught, who was using her dad's ticket. They knocked him back to Silver for a year. Turned out that that year was covid and they reinstated Gold at the end of the year, so there was basically no repercussions.

Last year, there were a bunch of kids just lurking to the side of the turnstiles that looked scared to approach even the most obvious punter. They need persistent, uppity people to do the job properly.

If they were serious, they’d issue membership cards with a photo and stop everyone for a visual check.
hire metro ticket inspectors, they’re not afraid to harass people

Has Gold always had a waitlist? I'm Silver but I recall it been possible to join Gold instantly but may have made that up. Too late now anyway stuck on a verry long wait for Gold.

I joined in 2005 and got full halfway through 2012.

Must have been 13 because I joined in 05 and had it in 13.

When it used to move at 2000-3000 a year

I always maintained that club of support had a big factor and they may have limited the number of Collingwood full members.

I definitely didn’t have it in 2011, but not sure after that when it came through.

Thanks.
Can you please expand on the ballot system for 2001?
Was it only available for full members?
Did Essendon nominated full members get priority for the 2001GF?
From memory it was done via form and posted in. You could have a max of 10 members on the ballot. And you were only allowed 1 entry per barcode. If your barcode was drawn twice neither would get a ticket. And I believe it was only Gold members as we had a extra that went separately and missed out.

Club of support gave you no priority prior to 2002 as that was the first year.

was the change to club of support done prior to the start of the 2002 season? or something they determined mid season or even by finals?? if anyone remembers

Even that's not bulletproof, MCC have photos on memberships and my cousin said he uses his mates MCC card to get into the G all the time (Collingwood supporter so big crowds too). No way would I risk it with MCC but some obviously do and he says he's done it plenty of times and never been caught (no idea if he looks like the guy or not).

I don't think there was a waitlist in the early 90s when they were trying to find the Southern Stand upgrade. I remember my neighbour joining in 92/93 and going straight to Gold I'm pretty sure which is why my dad ended up signing us up in 1997 after umming and ahhing for a couple of years, got Gold in 2003.

All provisional members of the old VFL/Waverly membership become full members when it become AFL membership in 1992 with the opening of the new Southern Stand. I was signed up in 1987 and got full membership in 92.

Collingwood track my membership years from 87 even though the memberships weren't connected until 92. Although I did have squadron membership used to attend non Waverly games. I don't believe details were tracked back then.

This for me too . Until the likes of Collingwood and Hawthorn and Carlton moved to the McG afl members was relatively empty

Talk about dodging a bullet.

It‘s unusual for such a rapid promotion. Of my family, these are the join/upgrade years:

1994/1998
2002/2009
2010/2022 x2

It was quite common in the 2000’s for silvers to get GF tickets with the prevalence on Non-Vic clubs being in it.
For what it’s worth for me:

1999 silver
2005 Gold.

Easily got a ticket to Brisbane V Port in 2004 as a silver for my first GF ticket in the AFL members.

Or maybe more.
I am 3500 odd, moved up 700 for this year and 860 last year. The year before was 1400 but that was an outlier. Has been under 1000 since 2018 otherwise.

We need a few years of GC or GWS (or to a lesser extent, Freo) being a dominant team, making a few grand finals in a short span, where we have one or two years of some combination of the three playing off against each other. This will thin out the ranks over a 3-5 year span. It just hasn't happened yet.

AFL Membership had two spurts of lots of sign-ups when Collingwood made GF when fans realised that it wasn't as easy to get GF access as it was in the 90's, and they didn't want to miss out on a future GF. No doubt there are Pies fans who went in 2023 who signed up after missing out on 02-03 and are glad they did.

The redevelopment will be interesting. What will happen with the reduced capacity during works? Will they shaft us further afterwards. I am hoping they get some better and more corporate facilities for the w*nkers and give us some seats back.
