Interesting cap situation at saints
Given we don't have anyone really earning massive money, you'd have to wonder what our cap situation is going to look like next year when we're reportedly looking at the trade/free agency market

Given the current hype surrounding Robey I can see a situation where the Eagles go with a combination of Duursma & Robey at 1 & 2 as the 2 best available talents, which would definitely throw the cat among the pigeons when it comes to who we draft or whether we take 1 and then look to slide back and acquire more draft capital in either this draft or a combination of this year and next year.

So I guess the question for the Sulley fans is if a situation like that was to unfold what is your fall back position that you'd be happy with?

Who would you then want us to take at 3 & 4?

Would you be open to the scenario where we take pick 3 and then trade back and/or out?

Based on estimates I’ve attempted in the past we would need to be heavily front loading contracts next year just to meet the cap floor. In 2027 our 2024 draftees will be eligible for higher salaries but still not mega $$$ because they are under the new EA model.

In effect we could get rid of substantial contract dollars for our existing senior players next year and anyone else we sign. Then we can do the same with new signings and re-contracts next year. Leaving open to spend big on our 2024 draftees in 2028, and we still should be able to bank the maximum additional cap space both years.

Only way this doesn’t happen is if we royally ****ed up somewhere. I remember someone said they thought Balta’s contract was heavily backended which made no sense at the time. Even with Lynch on $1.5m last year we had shed a lot of senior players contracts and had a very young/low cost list.

If CDT is still available at one of our picks I can see us taking him. I dont' really rate rucks and they aren't that integral to successful sides but I can see the merit in getting the position sorted for the next 10+ years, provided he isn't a bust

Well I guess that Hopps would like more success. Good luck to him. I actually wouldn't be upset if he got a suitor and we got a decent trade. Would sort of free up our midfield, and we get another pick.

Interestingly enough I’ve heard around the traps that he’s not that popular of a teammate.

It’s not shock horror as you’ll never get 44 blokes arm in arm but it kind of adds fuel to the fire if he does want out.

On the topic of CDT I really hope we don't draft him.
Someone rightly pointed out that an Alex Dodson that heavily slid in last years draft would be very similar in potential and had nowhere near the draft collateral to get a similar outcome.

Trade in rucks is definitely the way to go and Richmond will be able to offer in the next few years:
-Opportunity as undisputed #1 ruck whilst Nank enters into his twilight years
-Front ended up contract value where they can be heavily compensated upfront
-Rising team where they can build a nucleus of a strong midfielder core for the next 5-10 years

Examples of trading in rucks for past 10 years are:

Nankervis for pick 46. Had only played 12 AFL games prior to the trade. 199cm ruckman

Witts to GC for pick 44 & 62. Had played 40 AFL games prior to the trade. 208cm ruckman

Vardy to WCE for pick 72. Had played 25 AFL games prior to the trade with injury history. 198cm ruckman

Hickey to WCE for pick 39 + F4 for 60 + F4. Had played 79 games prior to the trade. 201cm ruckman

Lobb to Freo for picks 11 + 19 for 14, 43 & 47. Had played 74 games prior to the trade. 206cm ruckman

Darcy Cameron for pick 56 and got 62 in return. Had played 1 game prior to the trade and 119 since. 204cm ruckman

Pittonet for picks 54 & 66 and got 61 in return. Had played 7 games prior to the trade and 73 since. 202cm ruckman

Preuss for picks 31. Had played 18 games prior. 206cm ruckman

Hickey to Syd for picks 58, 62, F2 (37 in the end) and F3 (48) and got pick 34 in return. Played another 49 games/3 seasons after the trade.

D Fort to Bris for picks 50 & F3 (ended up being 50) and got pick 41 in return. Played 8 games prior and could be a x2 time premiership player in 48hrs time. 205cm ruckman

L Jackson to Freo for picks 13, F2 (pick 34), F1 (pick 7) and got pick 44 in return. 199cm ruckman. Definitely the highest draft collateral out of all the above.

Grundy to Melb for pick 27
& then traded to Syd for pick 46 & F2. Has played almost 250 games.

Soldo to Port for 41, 49, F2 & F4 for pick 50 in return. Had played 57 games prior. 204cm ruckman.

Sweet to Port for pick 50. Had played 11 games prior. 202cm ruckman

The above list shows me that clubs can import rucks developed by others and they can flourish.
Most picks are 40+ carried out at the trade table.
Players like Nank, D Cameron and Fort also show you don't need to be unicorns or flashy around the ground to have productive careers that generate team success as role players as a ruckman.

I like Sharp. I think he's a safe bet. I suppose the challenge is trying to project how a player playing u18's will translate into AFL.

You mention the name Cotchin - I know you're saying "like", not equal in quality - but I think he could be much closer to Jack Graham than Trent Cotchin.

Reading closer to Jack Graham than Cotchin has me like

Xavier Taylor & Sam Cumming would be the best option I reckon.

what might happen is Gold Coast get St Kilda pick for Flanders which might end up 7 and 8 maybe .

they then trade 7 and 8 to West Coast for 2 so they get CDT.

that way WC have 1, 7, 8. One would suspect WC could trade 7 and/or 8 for whatever depending on what they are chasing and CFC compo for de koning also on the table

i want your medication Magic holy shit. Suns to take CDT **** Uwland there on the CDT train

One other advantage for GC trying to get ahead of the Uwland bid is that they can bid on all the other highly ranked players linked to other teams and thereby reduce the price they will end up paying for their own players once they are eventually bid on

The two i like in terms of our needs from Twomey’s list are Dyson Sharp (9) and Josh Lindsay (11).

Maybe we offer Freo 3 for 11 and next year’s first, and hope they don’t win it (even if they do, the points are ok).

That way next year we could have a top 5 pick and somewhere around 12-19, in what is meant to be a stronger draft.

And get Lindsay (mini-Gulden) and a top 3 midfielder.

Get a ruck next year free agency, i presume Nank may head to Tassie for a couple of years with Benny in charge?

Yeah I get if people don't like Sharp cause he's not a good fit but it's weird to invalidate him as a top prospect after being the best champs player and best player in seniors. I agree it doesn't matter too much that he doesn't have great synergy with TT and Hopper, and the mid mix should be better next year regardless with more time to Lalor, Hotton and Campbell. Plus if we do finish 17th again we can potentially pick up Walker who's a better transitional mid than anyone we'd be eyeing this year.
I compared him to Jack Graham, so this might be directed partially at me!? Mid 180cm defensive mid with some athletic limitations describes each in a nutshell, doesn’t it? Both strong leadership, captaining their state at U18 level.

Sharp has been a stand out in his draft year, sure, but JGTI is well on his way to being a 250 game multi premiership winning afl player. I think he can be sold short by some due to a lack of athleticism. It certainly wasn’t meant to be disrespectful to Sharp! I guess combine testing will give us a better idea of where he sits, but I suspect if we’re expecting the second coming of Cotch we might be disappointed!

Sharp just doesn’t feel like a particularly “sexy” choice for a top 5 pick. Safe. But not sexy.

Teams split picks or trade up all the time.

There's a price for every pick. This "don't split picks" by people is stupid. If west Coast offered up their F1 and Hawthorns 1st for pick 4 we wouldn't take it? Or both their Future 1sts?

Sliding 3-4 spots back could buy as another first round pick, probably giving us players who address better areas.
This is deluded, your putting forward a scenario that no club would be prepared to pay. If you're putting up trade scenarios, at least try and get a little perspective about the value of a pick. Our pick, likely 4, is not worth a future pick likely to be 1 or 2 plus Hawthorns first rounder. Ridiculous.
