Totally get what you are saying. But it’s the same with you guys and Curnow (I’m clearly not comparing them as players) - you guys have leverage as he’s contracted and won’t trade him unless you get a good deal. It’s the way it works with contracted players you want to keep. If one of Naughton or Darcy goes down he is first picked. Having key position cover is a bit different to midfield cover.

That's a garbage deal for Carlton. A player who spent half the year in the VFL is not worth a 2nd.

Mid to high 30’s, after NGA’s etc..looks right to me for a player who can’t get a regular game at the dogs.

And that’s an option too as you’d get him for free next year.

We are talking about a pick in the 40s in a weak draft so not a ridiculous ask for key position depth who is contracted, but obviously you are entitled to see it differently.

He played two-thirds of the games this year. Given he’s probably around the 26th or 27th ranked player on our list and our 3rd/4th choice key forward, I don’t think an early-to-mid 30s pick in an average draft is an unreasonable valuation — especially with him being in contract. I know it’s easy to throw around lines like “he spent X amount of time in the VFL,” but that’s not really a fair representation of the sort of player Buku is. Not many clubs have two dominant key forwards like the Dogs and Blues — and in Carlton’s case, that’s not even the point, because he’s presumably being brought in as a defender (which I don't think he's overly effective at).

Think we all agree it'll be either 35 or 44.

With bid matching picks most probably making many of the 36-43 picks disappear, not a great difference.

There is a lot of goodwill for Buku at the Dogs. He was at the VFL GF and the Brownlow and enjoying his teammates company.

If he's got a significantly better deal in front of him than we can offer, and more opportunity, we won't make it hard.

From Carlton's side, with TDK, JSOS and possibly Curnow gone, having a versatile, competent tall nominate and fall over would be ridiculous.

Neither party will fight much.

TBH, I suspect we'll agree pretty quickly on 44, or else 35 for Khamis and a later pick.

Buku is a swingman like Silvagni, but much better up forward. It was reported last week Dogs will drive a hard bargain as they view him as required depth.

Obviously that means nothing, but if Carlton came to the table offering a third round pick they’d probably be laughed out the door.
