It’s a smart idea. The clubs message to its members needs to be that we’re playing youth for the next 1-2 years in order to develop our lust and improve our depth. The members would happily suck up another 1-2 years of mediocrity if it helps us do all this and then grab Cody plus another top 5 gun in 2026 as well as a free agent like butters with our extra Curnow-less (TDK/JSOS/….) salary.
It does probably spell the end for Cripps, Newman, Saad and Hewett though which is fine as the replacements are going to be guns and built for the modern game.

I think that Hewett has a couple of years left in him. It'd definitely spell the end of Williams though.
You could argue that the U17 pre-GF game in 2023 (this years rookies) was full of better players than what next years draft looks like.
Players like Faull, O’Sullivan, Langford, Lalor, Travaglia, Reid, Moraes, Lindsay, Kako, Hotton, L.Camporeale, Ashcroft all on one team that all showed good AFL level footy in 2025.
The other team had; B.Camporeale, Draper, Marshall, Smith and Trainor. And Ben getting the Best on ground. And they won despite having less drafted players (or at least players than got regular footy in 2025).
On a side note I’d be expecting Ben to be starting midfield in 2026.

A lot of mid 2024 power rankings had Lalor 9/10 or even later. A lot can change in a year of junior football.
Cody's plane of improvement has to level off and others will emerge.
Obviously there is no hiding him, but I suppose we will look to limit his exposure.

I expect Ben to become a regular participant in our midfield in 2026, nit sure what you mean by “starting midfield”.
He will be “blooded” as much as possible through the season. Will be interesting if he gets a “second position” or has to wait for inside time.
