Surely this only affects potential new NGA members, not existing ones. Surely they don't kick Dougie or Zemes out of our academy.

Zemes has an African-American father and an indigenous mother. He should be fine to stay in the academy.

Post 1350 which has a quote from C4 stating the AFL wants to remove Indigenous players from the academy
Ah think he was being sarcastic. Cal twomey said yesterday that they are wanting to get more indigenous players through the system.

Follow the quote to C4's post in the Carlton thread.

The AFL wants more Indigenous players in the system but believes that the Academies are actually reducing the number, because clubs don't spend much time looking at players tied to other clubs. And if they don't get drafted by the NGA club (which the AFL is now making even harder to do) then they fall through the cracks.

Nevermind that West Coast, Freo, Port and Adelaide haven't even been allowed to benefit from a large amount of Indigenous players they might've had access to.

In the long run, not tomorrow.

Read the Twomey story put out yesterday about NGA changes Ther is no change to indigenous status and there won't be when an official statement is made in the next month or so about Father-Son, NGAs, Academies and future bidding process.

Twomey works for the AFL, He wrote his story knowing what is going to be approved.

Any word on when the changes were going to be announced? Seems like everyone thought it was going to be today

Doug's status is one thing - which I have no idea when the bludgers at AFL House will make a formal ruling.

All the other stuff, will be once it's approved at the next AFL Commissioners meeting at the end of October.

Their GF time meeting they approved the 2 changes to the rules, no umpires bouncing the ball and no more substitute players.

That changed awhile back re equal status with Vic and other states metro and country zones but the no NGAs in top 20 picks in 2021 and then top 40 picks after JUH was drafted in 2020 meant indigenous players weren't pushed forward at NGAs as there was no real incentive to pick them.

2nd August 2024 rule changes saw the top 40 picks rule scapped for NGA players.

So there's been one draft when those clubs could've been selecting players. Although all four are only likely to start pushing to develop metro based Indigenous kids from last year, so 14-15 year olds that aren't going to be draftable for another couple of years.

Like we didn't magically get access to all Indigenous metro 18 year olds last year, and 17 year olds for this years draft. The decision in 2024 will only start providing true access to developed kids in 3 to 4 years.

The metro / country distinction was scrapped in 2020. I have previously written about it and posted the articles in both this thread and Port's NGA thread.

The articles hinting to the change were originally linked by Addy23. Until then I too incorrectly understood the metro/country split for the WA and SA clubs.

When JHF was drafted if we had of known his full aborigional heritage in 2021, we would have missed out on him not because he lived in our South Adelaide aligned metro zone, but because the JUH rule change of no NGAs in top 20 picks in 2021.

Soooo... Is he eligible for Port?

He'll be announced as eligible for Port but only if Port give up picks 1, 2 and 3 to get him.

The AFL will also announce that due to an accounting error in previous years picks 1, 2 and 3 will be given to Brisbane and Collingwood who overpaid for their father sons

Feel like he’ll be deemed eligible, but courtesy of the new rules we’ll in effect be forced to give up someone like Butters to get the draft picks to match a bid. The AFL giveth and taketh away.

The bolded is only true if Port haven't actually been running an academy and only looking to "develop" kids who were already going to go top 40.

NGA's haven't been the Vic bias thing that you think. The original zoning which didn't include metropolitan areas in WA and SA was because they were trying to make the zones even in terms of number of likely kids. Once they changed to no matching inside 40, no one cared about the size of the zones and thus they included metropolitan zones - meaning that WA teams currently have easily the best zones, followed by SA.

I could be wrong, but I think as it stands, Isaac Quaynor is the only solid NGA matched player in the league - unless you include CJ from the Hawks - which I wouldn't.

The longer it goes the less likely it will be favourable. If we were successful, they would need to let us know before trade period

you're still assuming competence on the AFL's part
