Do we need a first round pick? They tried trading him twice already. Won’t cost much the third time around. Link it to Checkers trade. Throw a draft pick in.
They need to replace him in the long term, so will want to be drafting a talented mid. They are paying 55% of his salary to achieve that end.

I think they erred with their list management. I suspect they were happy with Gibcus, Miller and Young as the primary options and they have a lot of talls so were happy to move on from Blight. Curveball comes along with Young moving to WC and all of a sudden the call to delist looks questionable. I’m not convinced this is a good because it’s a real sideways one from Dean, but the cost is hopefully a rookie list spot so not one I’ll be questioning.
Richmond had 7 picks inside the top 30 last year and they drafted 4 talls in that crop, plus the existing Gibcus and Miller. Luke Trainor is definitely seen as a key defender and they have tried Tom Sims down back too. Plus they're going to have two top 5 picks in this draft, so who knows what their plans are with those.

They just have a lot of high end prospects who they need to clear space for - We're looking for someone who might be better than Charlie Dean and able to compete for the full back spot with Billy Frampton. The requirements aren't the same, so it's possible it could work for us.

I'm in on Oliver but can't believe a club is offering to pay 600/700 k a year for the next 4/5 years to get him off their list.... Interesting!

My understanding is that DFAs are senior spots.

I think he became extremely complacent at the Dees. His best is top 5 in the comp, but his worst is deplorable. Could Fly along with Nick, Pendles and co unlock his best again? For a late pick and a heavily reduced salary id be interested

Massive no for me on Oliver, can see it turning out how beams returning turned out.

Please avoid

Beamer cost us so much in the trade, that was the stinger. Besides the pick swaps, we gave 18 and a future first. Crazy.

By comparison, if it's a Grundy-style salary dump (with a comparable trade price) for Clarry, that's a pretty decent reduction in risk vs reward straight away. The club would have to do some digging, speak to Oliver etc. and make an assessment as they did with Stringer last year.

But I get it - it's a gamble, and it's far from irrational to say it's not worth it.

Unless we add top end talent we won't keep up. At his best Oliver is a top end talent.
He was. Now he is quickly nearing the end with too many years left on his contract.

Melbourne are clearly heading towards a rebuild, otherwise they wouldn't entertain trading trac and Oliver in the same off season.

So they will likely prioritize draft picks over salary cap space.

Paying clarry something between 500 and 600k is a lot more palatable than paying something north of 700k over the next few years .

I have a feeling Oliver will prefer being out of the spotlight and may well choose an interstate team like the swans or even GC.

And 0 brownlow votes from it.
So makes you wonder that maybe he wasn't hurting with his touches.
Are we really judging players on their Brownlow votes after the debacle of the past 2 counts?

It's a bit bizarre that Dees have essentially trash talked Oliver by saying he'd only get games in the VFL if he stayed, knowing they were losing Trac as well.

Had this conversation with Clarry happened earlier whilst other clubs were looking for mids, you'd think they could have bargained for a better pick in return.
