I like the idea of a butters/curnow/smith trade

Cats - smith + 1st round (18) + 2nd round (39) + cats 3rd round (58) + 2026 1st -> Curnow + port 2nd round (28) + blues 3rd round (49) + port 4th round (65) ie curnow = smith + future 1st + pick downgrades (18->18, 39->49, 58->65)
Port - Butters + port 2nd round (28) + port 4th round (65) -> Smith + JSOS compo (21) + cats 2nd round (39) + Cats 3rd round (58) + tigers 2026 3rd ie butters -> Smith + early 2nd (21) + future 3rd + pick swaps (28->39, 65->58)
Blues - Curnow + TDK compo (9) + JSOS compo (21) + 3rd round (49) -> Butters + pick 3 + cats future 1st
Richmond -> 1st round (3) + future 3rd -> blues TDK compo (9) + cats 1st round (18) + port 2nd round (28)

Overall values Butters > Curnow > Smith (due to various controversies associated with player + cats driving the trade)

Leaves blues with 2 x 2026 1st round picks + picks 3 + 40 + 67 + 85 heading into the draft so we would need to work out how to bring in additional draft/trade capital to ensure Dean + Ison + Chesser/khamis/reidy (2027 draft picks + McGovern/acres)

It's pretty reasonable to expect that you would get 8 years of football (would be 32 in his 8th year) from a guy that would tick every box that would help make us a premiership contender (when you add what we are likely to add). Surely you dare to dream.

If we show positive signs next year & land Butters. I'd be shocked if Walsh leaves - he wants to win at the club he's spent his career grinding away at.

perhaps they’re not, but there comes a point where an offer becomes too good to refuse, just like TDK found.

It’s not inconceivable that Butters could receive offers with equal or greater disparity than the CFC vs STK offers.

And when you’re looking at a 4.5M difference over the lifetime of the deal, it’s hard to ignore.

I’d guess the lowest he’s getting is $1.5M per year, provided it’s to a good club and indexed with CBA updates.

Port will make sure there’s about $2.1M ‘spare’ in the cap to match any offer, and the trade’s going to be very significant.

Butters feels like it’s too many eggs in one basket.

From my perspective, you need a few absolute top-end stars, ideally one (maybe 2) in each 3rd of the ground, but after that there comes a point where the team is better suited with a more even spread.

There’s some sweet spots for value in terms of output, and once you’re crossing into the real top-shelf market an element of diminishing returns takes place.

Both De Konings in general are overrated, if we're being honest. Can do some nice things and look good while doing it, but can really fall down in some key matchups + generally not be as consistent as one would like.

Yeah and if Walsh sees Butters getting massive contract while we dont' come near that for him he might change his stance especially when other clubs come calling with huge offers in their own right...

Geelong are far more successful than we are... big $$ and success plus a potential feeling of betrayal with a lower offer will be more than enough to deter him...

He's 25 all home and away in 2026, 26 in 2027, 27 in 2028, 28 in 2029, 29 in 2030, 30 in 2031, 31 in 2032 and 32 in 2033. To me that makes 8 seasons at age 32.
