He’s an awful negotiator
Yep, see’s the picks as players not numbers, end of the day, if all we want to do is draft Fred and Whan and trade in McVee, Does it really matter how he uses the picks to get that done? Yes we always wonder why he “paid overs” for Bolton, but if we’re taking Reid with 11 or 17, what’s the difference, except his own an anxiety on draft night hoping the pick he’s got gets the player he wants.

I disagree. He gets deals done while at the same time negotiating in good faith and keeping a good relationship with other list managers. There is this prevailing opinion that you somehow need to 'win' a trade which is absolutely not true.

Because it's a tight tight competition, and how you conduct yourself in one trade period isn’t seen in isolation, it carries over to subsequent years. What you want to get the reputation for is knowing what fair value is and both paying it when you're trading in and demanding it when your trading out. If you give the impression you don't care, why should other clubs deal with you in good faith?

What if Reid had of gone earlier than pick 17?

Yes, it didn’t, but obviously the higher the pick the better your outcome of who you want.

I think we don’t want anyone with our first. I’d be more than happy to downgrade it.

Eagles would actually be a great candidate but they won’t trade with us.

We tend to "lose" a lot of trades when they happen which is where Walls's rep comes from. We arguably "lost" the Clark and Jackson trades when they happened but any look the players that Geelong ended up with.

Contrast with Dodoro who "won" trades a lot.

maccamk how positive were you on the Humphries move?

If Geelong are supposedly still in the hunt for Curnow, he must be involved coming this way...

Sydney are going hard at Curnow.

I don’t think Geelong have it in them to get both Marshall and Curnow

Be interesting to see how desperate they are though.

12 and a third for 18 and Humphries?

Funny that.

We almost always end up on the losing side while dealing in good faith.

When exactly are we going to reap the rewards of trading in good faith I wonder?

Twomey repeatedly saying they are not out yet just scares me. They are up to something fishy

At the moment they have 18 and 39, plus future picks…not much of interest there for Carlton.

We could me y motive it a bit? 12 and a third for 18 and Humphries?

12 for 18 and Humphries, with a swap of first and second round picks next year?

Let’s gamble!

Ok, hypothetical here,
Trade 1: Pick 12 to Essendon for Picks 20, 26
Trade 2: Pick 26 for McVee (right where everyone agrees he should be valued at).
Trade 3: 20, 34 to GC for 14 (GC gain approx 100 points for bids)
Net outcome 12 slides 14, Freo lose 34, Gain McVee
Alternatively let Melbourne get 14 in deal for Petracca and then do a deal with Melbourne.

I think the more important thing is whether or not we ultimately get what we want from the deals we do. Wallsy knows what the end game is. Probably doesn't thing haggling over tit bits is that important if we have already achieved enough to get what we want.

Trade Radio hosts reckon St Kilda should trade Pick 7 for Sam Flanders.

I admittedly haven't seen much of Flanders but I'm fairly certain he's not worth Pick 7.

I think the issue has mostly been we always trade in contracted players and get reamed because our trade outs are not contracted.

It goes both ways.

We got heaps more than we should've for Hill, Weller and Lobb. Probably others too.

Think there's been a bit of overrating our players and underrating opposition players too. For example a lot of people on this board thought we got screwed in the Logue/Tucker trade - I mean, cmon they're spuds and always were but we got a second and third rounder.

Blake Acres - future 3rd round pick

Comfortably better than McVee at the time of trade.

Mmmmm now I'm not not sure if I overrate McVee or underrated Blacres

FA compo is completely broken when Melbourne elect to trade for Miocheck instead of diluting their pick 42 received for spargo, it’s become a pick manufacturing factory rather than just allowing players to move around. These two players should just move with Pies getting a pick based on Dees deal, likely next to nothing.
