Didn't we lose 2 years worth of 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the same thing - ie Tippett was a 3rd party payment but we did not exceed the salary cap? Can the crows sue the AFL to get 2 1st ad 2nd round draft picks back as comepnsation?

We were success banned for a decade. I’m not even convinced the ban has been lifted yet.

Why do the circumstances have to be identical? Both have the same outcome - payments being made to players which are not disclosed to the AFL.

It really is semantics though - if the salary cap was not exceeded, then we have done no worse than Geelong it was just paying players outside the rules as they have done whether that was direct from the club or from a 3rd party. yet 1 gets 2 years worth of crippling draft sanctions, the other not even a slap on the wrist. In fact, if thats the only penalty the AFL are dishing out because its Geelong, thats the new precedent and every club should be doing it now knowing its a piffling slap on the wrist as a punishment.

I think most clubs have benefactors like that working to get players across. Including us with billionaire Darren Thomas.

I don't think at any point in the last few years Geelong have had the playing list that would warrant paying players outside the cap and they'd be bloody stupid (like we were) to do that.

Maybe they were anyway of course - though any evidence of that is still a conspiracy theory. If they were, they certainly haven't been dumb enough to put it in writing like we did.

Should they be sanctioned for this to keep it in like with our sanctions for Tippett? Probably more so than they have been

But it is a different circumstance. The draft sanctions for example, we volunteered to do that in 2012. There were stories at the time that we agreed to further draft sanctions to protect the board and CEO from being forcibly sacked. There is absolutely no way in the face of a TPP audit that Geelong would volunteer to give up draft picks.

We were also fined $300k, and Tippett was banned and fined, and several admin were banned

The main issue in our case is that we put in writing a secret side deal with the intention to pay Tippett outside the cap, as well as agreeing to trade him in a lopsided deal. It turns out we didn't exceed the cap, but it's possible that was a coincidence given we wrote out a deal and colluded with Tippett's manager to give him extra payments.

It seems the AFL felt at the time that we were deliberately trying to breach AFL salary cap rules, and they had some pretty compelling evidence, including us admitting to it. Geelong (apparently) haven't done that, so the AFL can only act on the evidence in front of them, and putting a plan to breach the salary cap in writing is worse. That said, there was at least some evidence of not disclosing deals, so they probably should have received a bigger sanction

The issue (insert benefit) of both BRIS's and GEEL's success has been the influx of high quality father/sons in a short period of time ......which had a domino effect of helping attract trade targets .....and then success enhances that Club attractiveness even more
