Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

To be frank, St Kilda fans have hardly covered themselves in glory on here the last 2 months but whatever doesn't happen on this one will be Geelong.

Geelong have clearly had a blanket rule of not trading for contracted players so they can extort negotiate for a good price. So trying to get two uncontracted players in Curnow and Marshall must be making Mackie feel a bit icky

I would have thought the idea of wheeling out the corpse of Rhys Stanley for more than a couple games next year was scary enough to just bend on f1 instead 1st this year but it will be interesting to see if they do.
Rucks are overvalued. Our ability to back up again next year won't be determined by Rhys Stanley.

Blicavs was our best ruckman in 2025 - was one of our best finals players when in that position- and bringing Stanley back for the GF was a mistake. Hopefully Blicavs just rucks a lot in 2026. Fairly simple solution.

That doesn't mean they are useless and irrelevantthough. Marshall is a gigantic upgrade
Upgrade yes.
What he's worth giving up is another discussion entirely.

We've made two offers for two improvements to the team. F1 for Marshall is enough.
3x R1 for Curnow is a lot of draft capital to commit, even if still under what's required.

If neither club wishes to budge more than happy to move on without either.
Someone is hitting that copium hard ;)
Someone doesn't know me, have long held rucks in low regard in terms of importance. The list of premiership rucks the last 15 years of so speaks for itself.

The early word from connected people, before anything was really discussed publicly, was that we told Marshall we'd try but couldn't guarantee we'd get it over the table with the saints and he was apparently happy with that.

Bit different to Leek Aleer who is out of contract and available for a future 2nd that was apparently too hard to plan for.

Absolutely fair enough

I do think Marshall and Cats/C.Scott would be a great fit tho. He's not a typical ruck and I think he'd shine in Geelong's system

I'd prefer to keep him than get a pick in the 20s tho

We won two finals by basically conceding the ruck and using our 'ruckman' as a utility/midfielder.

Bringing back the "real ruck" didn't exactly help us on the GF.

So I assume you guys don't care now if you get Marshall?

I agree that in the recent past that a ruck hasn't decided a GF except Gawn in 2021. However, 5 on the bench and changes to the ruck rules. Times could be changing.

He'd be a very good get for us.....but he's not the "missing piece of the puzzle that you need pay overs for because he's the only thing between you and a flag!!!" that some Saints fans keep suggesting.

The reason you need to pay overs is we want to keep him and he is contracted. Plain and simple. If it was Geelong on the other side of this, you guys would want Mackie and co to get overs. We have no reason to settle for unders or even a fair deal, to be honest. It should be skewed in our favour. Negotiation 101.

Fine either way. It sounds like the scenario that satisfies the most parties is Marshall trying to have a crack in St Kilda's forward line. Ro will get over it eventually. Geelong will just use Blicavs and SDK in ruck more if Conway is injured again. A no deal situation is okay.

Manager has thrown the toys as well.

Saints burning some bridges this off season.
The Aleer situation is a bad look I'll agree.

But I'm not sure how we can be painted as the bad guys for not trading a contracted player for unders.

Geelong have gone after two big named contracted players and so far have only offered unders. Clubs shouldn't have to fold in this situation to make player managers happy.

Saints are well within their rights to keep Marshall he's under contract

I suppose thats the jist of my point. Noting no one on bigfooty is a list manager and dont know what their club will do, Ill be interested to see if they break noting yes, Mackie is more stubborn than most.

My overall nuffy read is that they know the 5% chance they have of getting Curnow makes Carlton getting a F1 over 19 this year will be non-negotiable so trying to have their cake and eat it too. Think at some point a decision will need to be made on which player they get and I personally would have thought Marshall is obviously the better cost to improvement ratio and will get done.

I'd say if anything
As entertaining as the Gubby interview was.
Saying that the Aleer deal would get done
Was the mistake.
But, he did state on a few occasions also.
That we would do what's best for the St.Kilda fc.
I thought an F3 was a fair price for a player who has shown potential but not developed as hoped.
Until you sign a contract, nothing is binding in business
And what's the point of ringing a guy to give him that sort of news
That's what his manager gets paid to do, mediate.
He is not our concern until he signs on the dotted line.
And we've given them 6 days to sort it out.
We've organised our trade ins fairly & quickly
And also pulled out of this one with time to spare for the other party.
Its a business transaction, you want it or you dont.
