Making ultimatums in a deal you have no leverage in?
Which is a pretty common line clubs throw out to try and extract maximum value but ultimately will sell at the right cost.it makes no sense because Essendon have said numerous times he's not for sale.
Whilst I expect Essendon to take this generous offer, it would be more amusing to instead watch a period of self-inflicted sustained mediocrity.

It’s not about having leverage it’s so we move on and use the picks in other deals while we can
Which many people think was just Essendon's way to try and drive up his value.it makes no sense because Essendon have said numerous times he's not for sale.
Yeah but they've not come off as willing to trade the entire time, so it's very weird posturing from Hawthorn.Which is a pretty common line clubs throw out to try and extract maximum value but ultimately will sell at the right cost.
Setting a deadline is simply stating we will move on so if you are willing to trade talk to us before then, seems logical to me.
McClure is a clown until he says something hawks fans like.

MM/Sam don’t muck around it’s more than a good deal for the Bombers. The deadline is a smart move as it gives the Hawks more time to work on other deals/options. If it falls through can pull the trigger on something else Wednesday morning or hit the draft again before Tassie.
In a few years Hawks have transitioned its list from a bottom 4 side to playing in a prelim …… this ain’t a fluke!
Makes sense if they are moving on from Merrett, but if they still want him, then they'll need to offer something better than pick 9 so the ultimatum is pretty stupid.Hawthorn have instructed Essendon that they have until 7pm today to respond to their offer or pick 9 is off the table, per Sam McClure.
Should be an interesting couple of hours coming up.
Well the initial offer of a mid 1st, likely to be late future 1st and a Box Hill player isn't going to turn anyone's head.Which many people think was just Essendon's way to try and drive up his value.
This way Hawthorn are trying to find out for sure. Makes complete sense to me.
Doesn't sound like we've really given them any other option at this point.
Or it is not posturing but a genuine intention.Yeah but they've not come off as willing to trade the entire time, so it's very weird posturing from Hawthorn.
Wow. This is an incredible rewritting of history. As I recall, you were one of the "2 firsts or we walk!" - brigade. There was never any inkling WC would accept 14.What do you mean?
Hawthorn ended up giving up more than they'd otherwise have for Barrass because WCE were expecting it to be a straight trade for 14.
It worked out better in the long run.
It’s not about having leverage it’s so we move on and use the picks in other deals while we can
But is that really what's going on? Essendon have to address the fact their captain is unhappy and wants out, and if they are not talking about it and contemplating it its just shit people management.it makes no sense because Essendon have said numerous times he's not for sale.
Except they haven't improved their side whatsoever this offseason.MM/Sam don’t muck around it’s more than a good deal for the Bombers.
So why deliver an ultimatum then?
It's posturing to create FOMO, which makes no sense because Essendon have said no all along.
Why didn't they do it a week ago then?
Making ultimatums in a deal you have no leverage in?
Because we assumed Essendon we're a club run by adults who would actually respond in some way to a very reasonable offer. Why didn't they do it a week ago then?
to be fair, 4 weeks ago, Essendon had no idea that he was meeting Sam Mitchell when 3 months prior he was saying he was committed
No moving pick 9 helps us move assets to next year for other targets, we still have the salary space to fill now we aren't getting Merrett and still hold all our assets.Making ultimatums in a deal you have no leverage in?
Holding out for Merretts sake. He went out on a limb to get to us so we tried our best, and it hasn't been good enough unless we see a huge backflip from the dons. Why didn't they do it a week ago then?
Eagles lost by getting a F1 and F2 for a 30yo KPD that didn’t make the top 10 of your B&F with back issues? If that's true it's almost similar to what happened with Barrass and West Coast last year. Eagles really lost out on that one... You'll notice the plethora of Eagles posters in our threads... That's the reason.
