Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

it makes no sense because Essendon have said numerous times he's not for sale.
Which is a pretty common line clubs throw out to try and extract maximum value but ultimately will sell at the right cost.

Setting a deadline is simply stating we will move on so if you are willing to trade talk to us before then, seems logical to me.

Yeah but they've not come off as willing to trade the entire time, so it's very weird posturing from Hawthorn.

MM/Sam don’t muck around it’s more than a good deal for the Bombers. The deadline is a smart move as it gives the Hawks more time to work on other deals/options. If it falls through can pull the trigger on something else Wednesday morning or hit the draft again before Tassie.

In a few years Hawks have transitioned its list from a bottom 4 side to playing in a prelim …… this ain’t a fluke!

Essendon won't have understood anything you said

Hawthorn have instructed Essendon that they have until 7pm today to respond to their offer or pick 9 is off the table, per Sam McClure.

Should be an interesting couple of hours coming up.
Makes sense if they are moving on from Merrett, but if they still want him, then they'll need to offer something better than pick 9 so the ultimatum is pretty stupid.

Hawthorn has the time pressure here, not Essendon, who have been adamant Merrett is not being traded.

Which many people think was just Essendon's way to try and drive up his value.
This way Hawthorn are trying to find out for sure. Makes complete sense to me.
Doesn't sound like we've really given them any other option at this point.
Well the initial offer of a mid 1st, likely to be late future 1st and a Box Hill player isn't going to turn anyone's head.

What do you mean?

Hawthorn ended up giving up more than they'd otherwise have for Barrass because WCE were expecting it to be a straight trade for 14.

It worked out better in the long run.
Wow. This is an incredible rewritting of history. As I recall, you were one of the "2 firsts or we walk!" - brigade. There was never any inkling WC would accept 14.

Turns out they should have as it was a better pick than what you'll get in this awful draft, but that is certainly not what was being said this time last year.

Pretty easy to understand, it’s the best offer we’re willing to offer, rather than leave it till tomorrow night and miss out completely, we find out tonight. If it’s a no we move onto other things and do some more deals tomorrow. It’s great work. I for one hope it falls through and we pick up a first and extras next year for 9 then have a crack at Humphrey or Zac Bailey. Keeps our window open longer and is a much less short sighted approach

But is that really what's going on? Essendon have to address the fact their captain is unhappy and wants out, and if they are not talking about it and contemplating it its just shit people management.

Except they haven't improved their side whatsoever this offseason.

Tried for the following and look to have missed all 3:

Reid - Re-signed
Petracca - Off to the GC
Merrett - Don't have sufficient draft capital to entire Essendon and haven't talked any best 22 players into wanting a move to the Bombers.

They'll need to rely on Day coming back from a career-threatening injury and playing well, as well as natural progression from their younger brigade. Meanwhile, the older blokes get older and they'll only have new draftees to inject into the side.

Why didn't they do it a week ago then?

Coz the last day of the trade period wasn’t a week ago?

Making ultimatums in a deal you have no leverage in?
No moving pick 9 helps us move assets to next year for other targets, we still have the salary space to fill now we aren't getting Merrett and still hold all our assets.
Why didn't they do it a week ago then?
Holding out for Merretts sake. He went out on a limb to get to us so we tried our best, and it hasn't been good enough unless we see a huge backflip from the dons.

If that's true it's almost similar to what happened with Barrass and West Coast last year. Eagles really lost out on that one... You'll notice the plethora of Eagles posters in our threads... That's the reason.
Eagles lost by getting a F1 and F2 for a 30yo KPD that didn’t make the top 10 of your B&F with back issues?

Interesting.
