Polite intrusion incoming. And I'm not sure how to word it.

JUH needed a slap. No doubt.

But the fact that he could have stayed and dragged $800k out of your club but decided instead to go play for $250k with a one year contract deserves some credit.

If it was your son and he said "dad, I'm going to drop $600k, move interstate and try to sort my shit out".

You'd applaud your son.
I get what you're trying to say but the $800k was not guaranteed because the Dogs would have kept fighting legally to not have to pay it if he didn't turn up to training and adhere to his contract. Then we could have looked at 2025 retroactievely and been in the legal right to reclaim that money off him.

Perhaps Jamarra could have still earnt that $1.6 million and would have legally been defensible. But Dogs were/are prepared to go to court over it, but now we're not carrying the contract for a second year we're cutting our losses. It's not that cut and dry. For all of our criticisms of Jamarra's management agency they would have been giving him the best advice financially/legally here. It's not all take a pay cut to revitalise your career that they're making it out to be.

Ok, I'm just being positive about a humans health and your club.
Thank god I'm not a GC supporter posting this :)
I guess you have to look at it from our View.
We have now lost Bailey Smith and Marra, both super talented, best 22 who have partied their asses off/taking coke while both have been on medical/person leave full pay. Then use mental health for their behaviour.
You know what's not good for mental health... heaps of cocaine.
we lost Approx 800k burnt in salary cap for the last 2 years, All while being played out in the media.

I am as disappointed as anybody in the trade for JUH, and worried that he will make us pay in future as a tremendously talented young man.

However, I think some perspective is needed.
  • We have confirmation that JUH's situation posed as a distraction heading into the 2024 elimination final, and a whole year of speculation and frustration from our coaches and players in the media.
  • Despite his talent and his output at his age, of the 18 teams in the league, only one of them was willing to take him on. We weren't alone in not wanting him on the list. Only one team did no matter the cost.
  • The coach at this club has a history of working very well with and getting the most out of troubled young men, including bikie affiliates and people with active charges of armed robbery and other heinous acts.
  • Despite this history, the only offer they were willing to put to JUH was a one year, $200,000 contract that is heavily incentivised.
Regardless of which version(s) of events that you accept regarding JUH, the above is not the circumstances of somebody who is a good chance of turning it around. It paints the picture of a young man who is incredibly up against it to get anywhere.

We may end up rueing this situation in future, and we should absolutely be conducting a thorough review of our conduct and whether JUH could have been supported in any better way, whether proactively or reactively.

But to suggest that we've just given away a star player for pick 74 is not really the whole truth.

Personally, I will take a balanced approach and hope that JUH finds happiness and success - outside of football.
I think you missed the most import thing that explains Gold Coasts taking a punt on Jamarra. That they have more than enough KPF to take the chance on the trade turning to custard. And he also provides cover should King decide to take up Collingwood's standing mega offer that they currently have on the table, should Jamarra turn it around.

They've brought in some cheap insurance that they can walk away from at anytime without it ever blowing back on them.

ah yes let me celebrate years of mediocrity with not much being done to improve that

good job doggies on missing the 8 for the second time in 3 years bravo
Something about the word "mediocrity" that just makes everything about a post on bigfooty invalid.

Are we "accepting" of it as a club?

Cannot believe Essendon are gonna keep Merrett. Talk about ego getting the better of you.

The way it’s played out is just Andrew Welsh swinging his $400m dick. They need to start fresh and he needs to go.

He's under contract. Good on them.
I don't want to see the Hawks get better either.

I'm entirely fine with it from an Essendon perspective. They're not North, West Coast or Richmond, and they have money in a football department, they're always every chance of randomly going on a run (the last 20 years aside, lol). But to do that, you need to have good players first.

Step away from the over analysis of draft picks, salary caps etc. Teams bottom out in the hope of eventually getting good players, but they do that by ... getting rid of the equivalent good players that they already have? It has never really made sense to me and good on Essendon.

All of this is beside the point of just enjoying winning games on a week-to-week basis. It might not win them the 2033 premiership or whatever, not doing this trade, but at least their fans get to see more wins because of Merrett next year.

What is going to help them more in the long run, have Merrett who is 30 and doesn’t want to be there, or get three decent draft picks in? It’s not like they don’t have mids. Caldwell, Durham, Parish. Just rip the bandaid off.
