2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

At the end of their day their offer was still one decent pick and a bunch of junk. Glad we turned it down. We have every right to demand overs for a good player that we see a role for. Our list looks so much better with Marshall still on it. I think the TDK/Marshall combo can cause some real headaches for opposition sides next year.
I just think Mackie is a smartarse and drinks his own bathwater.

Revises the offer at 7.15 to 2025 1st and a F2 - rejected

3 minutes before deadline pick 40, F1 and some FF pick. - rejected

Geelong had all those picks for over a week, and wouldn't offer it. The bloke has main character syndrome and believes his own publicity. He wasn't negotiating with a club desperate for a salary dump, he was a contracted required player.

Well they got nobody, their scene stealing late bid tactic was a complete and utter embarrassment. Enjoy using Stanley, a bloke who was substituted in a GF before a bloke with a broken arm.

I suppose they think Worpel will get them the 9 goals in a GF they got flogged by. Good luck.

Id love Collard to pass him, Collard has the traits to be the best small forward in the game.

It might never come together but if it does hell be unreal.
Ease up on the Mayo , potential and actually doing it are two different things

I think Marshall will be playing middle -> back, not middle -> forward

He has such a safe pair of hands hes a potential gun monster full back when needed

No where near pace and mobility to play full back. Ok dropping back as a ruckman to fill holes but to be accountable for a KPF....not going to happen, would be eaten alive.

Not sure what Saints are thinking here. Can Marshall and TDK play in same team? Can't see that Saints would turn down Cats to keep Ro as a back up ruckman. So they must see him as pinch hitting forward. If King is fit, don't see how that works either unless plan is to play King further up at CHF. Be interesting to see how they fit it together.

That was a whirlwind. Overall I'm okay with the direction that the club is taking, although I'm a bit sceptical as to whether we have the top end talent to get the results we're clearly striving for in the next couple of years.

TDK - I still don't see how his contract can be justified based on what he's produced so far. Here's hoping for a breakout year

JSOS - Happy with this decision. Quality Battle replacement and should pair well with Wilkie

Ryan - Not necessarily best 22 IMO but the trade cost was low, so I'm not fussed

Flanders - Very very happy with Ned. I have no problem trading pick 7 for him.

Heath - Given that we brought in TDK and kept Marshall, this makes sense. I do like him as a player and think he could be handy though.

Steele - Sad to see him to but I think it's for the best. He's been ordinary for a few years and would have played a lot of VFL footy with us next year.

Marshall - If not for this sudden push for immediate success, I'd say we should have taken Geelong's final offer. But given the fact that we're bringing in older players like Silvagni and Ryan, it makes more sense to keep Marshall and I'm glad that we did. If TDK goes down and were left with Dodson and Keeler next year we'd be in trouble. I also have no faith in King to play out a season so Marshall might find himself playing 60/20/20 forward/ruck/bench.

Aleer - Thank god they came to their senses. Would have been an expensive VFL defender after we brought in JSOS. It's unfortunate how it played out, but I'd rather cop the backlash than pay up big for a C grader.

Ryan is best 22.

He's a former AA player (A forward) who's been playing in one of the worst teams we've seen in recent times.

With a clean bill of health and a good supply he will go well.

totally fair points, lets see what happens next years, ive got no clue. But one thing is clear. this was the year clubs said "thanks but no thanks" to players.......

Classic Geelong arrogance.

He had 10 days to offer that pick and give use time to negotiate picks around that F1. But he waited until the last minute just expecting us to give in.

I wonder how many trade radio listeners are gonna go watch the new Springsteen film
I still dont know what that sheila was on about or what product she was selling talking about best unrestricted Free agents and it being Monday somewhere (which is factually incorrect)

Feel for the guy at a personal level tbh. He will always have a place in our hearts, and maybe even rank as one of the top "X" clubmen for us, but its better for him to be playing every week at the AFL than slowly being forgotten.
He got an extra year on his deal at Melbourne.

If people are still hung on Aleer as some black mark against us. Then look no further than how we managed Steele’s exit.

Facilitated without pushback on return.
Ensured he got an extra year and us contributing a minimal amount apparently.

If Tom Morris is correct with the offer I reckon I would have actually done that deal.

Just not that confident Marshall is going to be a gun forward. I think he might end up spending a bit of time on the pine.

Fingers crossed it works though.
Ross saying they came really late with the offers is interesting.
Yes, it's a good deal but now there is no time left to get our follow-on deal done.
2026 1st is still there for next year if things don't work out this year.

It's funny because we have Enright at the club who falls into the other category from that era (with guys like Bartel), but I always got the feeling there was a core, tight-knit group of jerks in that Geelong backline: Scarlett, Milburn and Mackie. His presser last night didn't dissuade me from that feeling.

I do think if Geelong comes earlier with the F1 offer, it may well have got done with a few adjustments. It doesn't feel that off the mark. They did their usual trick of giving their best offer with 5 minutes left and for once it didn't come off for them. It usually does work though so can't blame them too much.

This felt like a no bullshit trade period for us. Got our deals done early and fairly, even if it may have been slight overs with Flanders.

You saw the difference between Sydney's offer for Curnow which involved some decent players and Geelong's which didn't, and no surprise that Sydney got the deal done. Curnow also not nominating a single club helped out. Clubs took back some of the power.

Hopefully we're moving into an era where contracted players cost more than a few draft picks, and be more flexible with their destination club.

Geelong cottoning on that the competition doesn’t revolve around Geelong was the best part of tp.
By leaving the offers so late they’ve actually ****ed themselves up by not giving themselves time to enact a plan B.
They should have just bitten the bullet and sold the farm like Sydney to get their player.

Mackie's left deals to the last minute the last few years, no doubt a deliberate tactic
