2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

It is amusing all our recruiting and retentions wins are being minimised because of the Aleer situation. Ralph, Barret, Cleary and Jenkins are a broken record about our war crime against Aleer and our holding Marshall ‘against his will’. Yet not a mention of how respectful and efficient we were in getting the rest of our deals done.

I also haven’t heard anyone discussing the Liam Ryan acquisition mention the guy had been all Australian.
Not as a defence of the media (if youve ever read me posting youll know my opinion of the media in general is low) but you usually get the glossy treatment on decisions AFTER you have some success, weve been trash for a long time so we dont get the "its a genius move" etc.
Definitely doesn't train with with Max King😜
Or Hunter Clark

10:13 - St Kilda explain Leek Aleer withdrawal
After chasing GWS defender Leek Aleer for several years, St Kilda shockingly pulled out of what appeared to be a relatively straightforward deal with the Giants within the final week of trade period.
With a lucrative deal on the table for Aleer, the Giants defender requested to join St Kilda, however the Saints opted against trading for the out-of-contract Giant, blindsiding Aleer following multiple meetings and offers out of Moorabbin.
Speaking on Trade Radio, St Kilda CEO Carl Dilena revealed the details as to why the deal fell through.
"It was disappointing from our end," Dilena told Trade Radio.
"It's one of those really challenging situations you face as a leader or as a group, where the goalposts shifted.

"We had to pivot, and unfortunately, the way the facts change, we knew we weren't going to be able to satisfy GWS, so we thought the best thing to do was to hit that straight up, rather than dragging it out to 7:30pm last night.
"Not all deals get done, as we've seen, and we thought it'd probably be better for him if we gave his manager the opportunity to see if he could find another home.
"We also knew full well that he had a contract offer from GWS, so he wasn't going to go hungry, he had a guaranteed position already.
"It was a tough call, but we tried to do it with respect. We knew we were going to have a media pile-on, that's just what happens and you cop that.
"We've moved on, he's got a contract with GWS, he is in a good spot and we have managed to sort out our list.
"I think it's worked out well in the end, and we just have to move on, cop a whack and just keep going."
Was there any thought of taking him to the pre-season draft?
"It was more that it made us pivot and look at plan B, and the depth of our list. We debated it pretty heavily, as to whether we could see it on that basis or not.
"Ultimately, when you are juggling list spots and availability as well as a whole range of other factors, it pushed us in a certain direction.
"It's finished in a good spot."
Did Jack Silvagni coming in affect the trade?
"It did. There was depth added by Jack.
"If you're thinking of this as a two to three year plan, Jack came into the equation very late. It did change the dynamic if you look at the depth of our backline versus other spaces in our list.
"It certainly did shift the dynamic just a little bit. We still thought going into trade period that we would take Leek Aleer."

so basically, "I work for st Kilda football club, thats my job, deal with it!"

im 100% fine with this approach, shows a maturity developing at the club......

Do Brisbane get celebrated for not accepting "unders" for Ah Chee? It's just the typical media bias, Victorian media pundits often slag on St Kilda because they follow the vibe, and it means that the club that they support isn't in the spotlight.

Most people want to see Saints fail, so that they can sink the boots in collectively, but I'm happy with how the club is being managed over the past 4 years. Making tough decisions on great servants (ala Hawks) to refresh the list and focus on sustained success. Sad to see Steele leave, wanted him to get his reward for all he has contributed to the club. Now it is on the young core to take us to finals and beyond.

Maybe some strategy for Tasmania draft??? In 2027 Tasmania have picks 5, 7, 11 and 13 which they have to trade for players or picks. Could be loading up early on points for pick swaps is considered advantageous somehow? But I can’t say I really understand it as I imagine Tasmania would be after established players rather than splitting high picks for 3rd and 4th rounders.
2027 = Superdraft. Load up

Don't rate this. Just hand over the coaching role to Enright now if that is the case.

I speculated when the role became available Ross might see himself in that role when it's time to hand the keys to Enright so may not want to bring in the likes of Bartel. I guess him doing the role while staying on as coach would solve that issue.

I'm still 100% speculating though.

So we’d have taken him still if the price was right, based on list needs. Ie not paying GWS overs for something less necessary.

Brisbane is busy winning flags for fun so i get that they dont get criticised (they also just nailed free agency so kudos) but their demands for Cal Ah Chee should be getting ****ing reamed tbh.

Demanding a first then refusing to budge on a guy they already farewelled and is out of contract and they DONT wanna pay and might conceivably be pushed out of the 23 next year with returning injury players and the consistent top 5 kid was ****ing ridiculous.

IMO that was the biggest story of the trade period and sending him off for a second would have at worst done absolutely nothing to them either way.

So what was it, GWS weren't going to budge or we didn't need him with JSOS? Based on his answer about the PSD it seems more likely it was the latter but then why not break it to Aleer when during free agency. Just weird and kind of amateurish behaviour tbh. End result is great for us I just hope we haven't poisoned the well when it comes to courting future recruits.

Carl Dilena on TR saying that highly focused on having strongest list possible for the next few years and when tassie come in because it’ll be a “raid like we’ve never seen before”
Have we learned from when we tried rebuilding in the middle of GCS and GWS arrival?

Max in the gym today with anabolic gabe lol

Great to see that Max has made real progress! Wish the blokes in here would lay off him a bit. Personally I think it's really encouraging that he's now at the stage where he can hold his own water bottle !!:thumbsu:

I'd say both, JSOS made him non-essential, if the price was acceptable, then we'd do it, as soon as GWS wanted more than we did to pay, we took the opportunity to exit the deal and potentially used the cash elsewhere

lol you couldn't make this shit up. The pathetically unserious Bulldogs, after embarrassing themselves by Beveridge forcing the List Manager to make a completely unrealistic and amateur play for Wilkie because he had he is nose out of joint about being cucked on JSOS, went and did the exact same thing to Adelaide trying to make a play for Mark Keane because Adelaid had enquired about Sanders. :D :D
What a clueless outfit they are. Like Wilkie, Keane has now extended at Adelaide until 2028 because he wanted nothing to do with a club that is run by the coach and throws out offers like confetti.

they did get a 175cm, 75kg key back though :D:D:D:D
Your hatred of the bulldogs always leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling Joff, keep it up

So is it true that Leek initially had a 3 X $300k deal on the table from the Giants, and then after we said no thanks they revised their offer to 2 X $200k?

If that is the case shouldn't the media be all over them like a cheap suit for being shifty kahnnnts? Not a great look for their other fringe players!

Yeah i can cop that. i expected the club to come out and give an explanation or make a move that justified it a bit better
Gubby: yeah, well, uh….you know, we decided we were bloody stupid offering a contract that size to a kid who’s 24 and not so great really.

So yeah, ok , we did have a couple of dates, but you know, dunno, uh, what we were thinking - not like we put a ring on his finger.

Whaddabout the Cats, who uh, you know, left Roma standing at the altar?
