2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I just dont understand the Jack Steele decision, especially when we gained so little in trade for him.

It certainly makes us worse next year. He might not be in our best 22, but how many times did we roll out our best 22 in 2024 - none is how many. You dont go through a season with 22 players, and I'd rather have Steele as the next mid up, rather than Jones etc.

I think in 5 years we look back and think it was the right thing to do, but in 12 months we might not have that view.
I think it was largely about salary cap - we can't have a player on Steele's money as depth. I agree with you that we didn't gain enough in the trade though, especially with Mitch Cleary reporting that we are still paying some of his wage!

The club has been damn impressive imo.

We’ve had our share of challenges with list management this year. From other clubs desperate to get Nas, to trying to bring quality players in to improve our list. I don’t think the club could have handled those challenges much better tbh.

I think the money being thrown around did unsettle a few of our players… it’s human nature… but the club managed it.

Nas just had to get done. It got done.

I think the Windy signing was really important.

Selfishly, I got what I wanted. I said early in the year I’d love us to look at Jsos, not thinking it would happen. I couldn’t care less that he’s the son of Sos. He’s a smart player that gives 100% and uses the ball well. The fact we’ve brought in good ball users is what I’ve been wanting for years.
I also felt moving Steele on would be a good thing.
I didn’t want Aleer.

The club showed balls, both in keeping Ro and pulling out of the Aleer deal.

They treated Steele with respect by having the decency to be honest with him.

Hats off to Ross, Sos, and my new man crush, Gubby Swagger Allen

So now we’re ready to rock’n’roll. There’s no doubt that TDK’s best is very very good. Same with Flanders. Up to the coaches to see that happens. It really is over to the coaches now. No excuses. Finals or GTFO.
You say it's over to the coaches now, and I'm happy with that. I'm confident our coaching panel is capable of getting the best out of the players at hand, something I haven't felt in a long time.

If anyone can make two rucks work, it's Ross, Corey and the rest of the coaching staff.

If salary cap concerns are the main reason that Steele was traded then we must anticipate that clubs are gonna go hard after Wilson because Steele is only contracted for another two years, so the only trade period where his salary will matter is the next one. If I'm right, Wilson and Sharman are the only players of note that are out of contract in 2026.

My guess it was proactive rather than being due to the cap (ie enforced).

Schooner maker and Zones gone. Hope they get picked up in the VFL team, especially Schooner, maybe a 1 trick pony, but it's a very good trick. And still pretty young.
You'd think if Ari doesn't get picked up as a DFA then then he'd be playing VFL for Tassie.

Can't see him playing VFL for the club that flicked him.

I've fallen well behind.

Are we any chance of pouncing for Ah Chee in the PSD if nobody earlier does?
Seems to be accepted that he gets to Adelaide. I’ve avoided all media today apart from about one minute of Hird and Morris laughing that the Crows will just deny him doing a medical anywhere else and that will be that.

If there’s one position I’m interest to see how we develop it’s our small-mid fwds:

Higgins
Butler
Ryan
Collard
Said
Henry
Owens
Hall (/mid)
Pou (/mid)

Butler and Ryan at the tail end of their careers as premiership winners.

Higgins a top 3 small forward of the comp.

Hall & Pou will probably rotate mid and forward, could even throw a player like Wilson in here also he’s absolutely a scoring threat.

Owens a lock as a true mid sized forward.

Henry a big question mark but if he comes on then he could be best of the lot.

And then that just leaves the development of Collard and Said who have a lot to work with.

All King/Sharman and Marshall/TDK will have to do is bring it to ground.
Would love to see Henry as an attacking half back/wing kick starting our counter attacks with Sincs

Ronnie survives!
RTB loves a role player with work rate.

Ari was a beautiful kick, but never won his own ball. Always running around looking for a cheap receive in the backline. Doesn't translate to AFL footy.

From the Prez:

Max joins new life member Jimmy Webster, Zaine Cordy, Angus McLennan, Harry Boyd, Zak Jones and Arie Schoenmaker in departing the club this off-season. We thank them and wish them all the best for the next chapter.
