It seems highly unlikely, but maybe another club will take a chance on him?

Spend six months in some regional league, maintain fitness and get the body right, and then take a punt on the mid-season draft. Possibly some side or other will have had a lot of midfield injuries and decide he'd be a good get for half a season.

Maybe. We probably will never know unless we either have an alternative world where he does play or we hear news about how his injury could not be fixed.

It's the correct call.

They tried fixing his injury for 3 years without success.

He's approaching 34 years of age.

He is done.

And therein lies the problem. If he hasn't been able to get it together with all the resources and expertise at his disposal over the last 3 years, a regional club at the age of 33/34 seems unlikely to be the point of difference.

Got a little bit emotional watching the highlights package the club put out.

Reminded me what a unique footballer he was. inside/outside, running ground level player, but great overhead. Could have been an All Australian half back, but was an All Australian midfielder.

Feel cheated we never got to see what he could do in his final seasons. Maybe could have gone to half back and completed the circle.

Super career and never put a foot wrong over his time at the club.

Go well Guth.

I think we can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that it's the correct call because we have all seen, at our own club and others, what happens when old guys become plagued by injury and then continue to try to play on. Doesn't end well. Body is broken down, and even if it wasn't, he's old and has missed a heap of footy. The likelihood he would be able to return in 2026 and contribute in some significant way would be very, very slim.

Had a good career, won a flag and a couple of B&Fs. He should be very proud, but when it's time, it's time.

(although he did have periods of lurking around packs for cheapies)
I remember this and it really frustrated me at the time. The more I saw it though, the more I figured that he just didn't quite know how to play the outside mid role, always seemed to be stuck in no man's land - he was much better as either an inside mid or playing half back.

Ahh that goal he kicked in the last quarter at KP against the reigning premier Melbourne in 2022. What a moment.

Goosebump moment, felt like the passing of the guard. We went to top spot on the ladder after that win, and didn't lose for the rest of the year.

I can acknowledge that this is probably the right call.

But I'd still probably have given him 1 more year if he wanted to. Assuming that this means we're taking Bews on for another season (as we haven't heard anything about him being delisted yet), I just think the upside of Guthrie vs. Bews is so much higher that I'd be inclined to roll the dice.

If Cuth showed any real sign of ever getting properly fit again, there would be absolutely no doubt about this. As it is, he's broken down time and time again in the past three seasons. And he would start his next quest to overcome all of that in 2026 at 33 years of age, with basically no football at all in the preceding 12 months.

I'm one of his biggest fans of all around here. Yet even I can admit that this was an awful reality to contemplate and still clearly the right decision to make.
