Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

Don't think 2/13 for 5/6 is happening because we'd probably take Farrow at 6 anyway is the vibe I'm getting. We can probably get him at 9 with the Carlton trade so no real point. Haven't seen any actual links with us and Cumming, not convinced he's on our radar as much as he is on here.

Now that draft day is getting closer.

Somebody ITK let us know when you know who we are taking at two. That so I know whether I need to waste my time to tune in or not.

I don't to watch the destruction of this footy club on live TV. I am not an bystander to this...

Last time we were told beforehand that Harley was a lock since we have 1 and 2 it should be the same.

In case no one else has shared a link yet, the Rookie Me Central draft guide has landed. Always a great read through

I like what RMC do - not always agree but they do the hard yards and attend games.

I though I would share the Athletic and On Field assessments made on the players I am interested in.

They rate each talent by Elite (Maroon), Above Ave (Green), Average (Yellow) and Below Ave (Red)

I personally put more weight on the On Field as you can have all the athletic attributes but do not know how to play the game, it is worth SFA.

Here are the top 16 in the open pool

With the RMC Ranking of key attributes, it did confirm a few things to me that I saw during th eyear.

If we want to win contested football - just take Sharp.

If we want to player with the most elite rankings - take X Taylor

If we want the HBF with possible midfield potential, don't reach for Farrow as O Taylor offers much the same. As does Barker (he played wing but can play across all three lines)

I am not in the CDT camp and the fact that he is Average for everything On Field summarises how I feel. All his upside is athletic!!! Ranking him as elite ceiling is based on what he does in the gym and track, not what he delivers on the field!! Just saying.

Cumming - bloody good at everything and another contested ball winner.

Greeves - very good but very slow without endurance.

Schubert may have his detractors but there are some thing you just want your KPP'ers to do - aerial dominance, strength, consistency and the contest.

Zero hanger has our 2026 AFL List Size (Current)

Primary ListCategory A RookieCategory B RookieTotal
31. 5 2 38

So this suggests we haven't upgraded Maric and hutch.

Zero Hanger do a great job but they’re just as reliant on information being released publicly as the rest of us and aren’t infallible. For instance they currently have Ginbey out of contract next year when he’s signed to 2027 and they’re a year short on Hutchinson

The 31/5/2 split is incorrect on at least one count as Champion is the sole Cat B player now Livingstone has been delisted - I think because they’d assumed Livingstone had been shifted to the Cat A list when it was actually Dewar

They won’t have accounted for Dewar being shifted to the main list because, even though he has to be upgraded after 3 years as a rookie, that’s yet to occur. It will be done in the coming days as the AFL finalise the draft order and number of picks each club holds

As for Maric, courtesy of Miguel Sanchez being the pedant he is, it’s assumed he’s been upgraded as he isn’t listed in the AFL record as a rookie. Unfortunately there’s no announcement of that occurring so we’re left guessing

Taking those two changes into account the list split is 33/4/1 giving us 5 main list openings - which is the number Clarke stated as being available in an interview after trade period closed

In the absence of any easily verifiable list provided the club or the AFL that statement from Clarke is the best indicator we have

Doesn't make an awful lot of sense given I was 99% the max time spent on the rookie is 3 years? Maric is at 2.5 now no?

Maximum time is 3 years (with a recently added qualifier that allows an extension if a player hasn’t reached at least 10 games I think). However, for mid season draftees, like Maric, that first half a year on the list isn’t included in the 3 years. So he didn’t need to be upgraded until next year

Could maybe be an exception as he was a mid season rookie pick where it's 3.5

This is correct

There's been a lot of enthusiasm here for trading 2 & 13 for 5 & 6 so I thought I'd look at 10 drafts worth of selections (not including the last couple of years since they are not well established).

Over the 10 drafts, I'd take the players selected at 2 & 13 8 times, and the players selected at 5 & 6 just 2 times (2015, 2018).

2021 is quite an interesting one since Hobbs is a bust, but was taken alongside Sam Darcy. The other group had Andrew and Rachele which is very talented. I'd still take a single Sam Darcy over those two players.

Nice work and it’s a sobering comparison

But due to bids the picks used are likely going to fall closer to 3(or4) and 16 for 8 and 9

Absolutely would like that 6th spot. Although perhaps we are looking at it back to front and the player that misses out isn’t an NGA but instead we only take 2 open draftees.

If the rumored 13 + 34 for 9 happens, would a club come with an F1 for 9? Then we just use pick 1 & 2 plus 3 NGAs.

Or if the Bombers came with a pick shuffle for 2 that ended up with us having 1 & 5 and their F1. We might just take Duursma, Sharp and our NGAs plus the mature rookies.

Hadn’t really considered it since trade period but I’m now wondering if future picks might be on our agenda for Walter and Warner trades next year, or we simply don’t rate this draft and are keen on some kids next year.

I know it would invoke some ‘kick the can down the road’ allegations but if it helps land us some gun trade targets or a future star next year over a speculative pick this year, then it might be worth the wait.

The club has regularly stated their intentions to use our three R1 picks - often referencing the amount of work required to get themselves in that position. Also, pantskyle who is usually pretty reliable with his intel, has repeatedly said the goal was 3 picks inside the top 10

So I’d be staggered if we didn’t use those first 3 picks

It’s what we do with 34 and, to a lesser extent, 41 that will have the greatest bearing on our NGA players. We could -

• Combine 34 and 13 to move up to pick 9 in a trade with Carlton
• Match a bid on Williams with 34 and 41 (if necessary) with a later pick coming back
• Choose not to match a bid on Williams and use a 4th pick instead- pick 34 will come in to around 28-30 on draft night so there’ll be some useful players still available at that point
• Trade 34 and possibly 41 for a future pick(s) to a team chasing points or a club keen on a player that has slid unexpectedly

Whatever happens, we’ll only have room for two of Williams, Evans and Banfield on the main list so to land all three, one will have to slip through without a bid. I’d be intrigued to know where we rank each player on our draft board and in what order we prioritise them amongst each other

Walley I don’t think gets a bid and probably only ends up on the Cat B list of Evans goes in the main draft

I’m toastie-less tonight but I’m still hear wondering why the **** we’re going after Farrow

He falls squarely in the range our third selection falls - whether that remains at 13 or we succeed in trading up to 9

There’s a possibility that one of Schubert, Sharp or Grlj slip through to 9 which would require someone like Dovaston, Lindsay, Marsh or Farrow to go in the top 8 open pool picks

I get that people, including myself to be honest, would prefer Grlj or Dovaston over Farrow because they’re considered more of a list need than another half back flanker. But don’t ignore that Farrow is a worthy choice at that point in the draft

So Sharp the least athletically gifted but not a plodder.

Hibbins-Hargreaves interests me. Obviously clubs have concerns with him but he's a one-touch player. If he can put it together, whoever gets him would be getting a bargain.

The true benefit of the 2 amd 13 for 5 and 6 is to drag us out of the KPP/Flamkers area if you ask me. IMHO the best player at pick 2 is a KPP like CDT and best players likely to be around at 13 would technically be non mids like Marsh/Dovaston/Farrow/Lindsay

Best players at 5/6 will be Sharp/Cummimg/Grj/Robey and likely to be 2 of those which just fits what we need

I want 5 and 6 to save us from ourselves a bit too :D

Any reason why it’s not pick 1? Outside chance at Patterson if we make GC use all their points and have to make a call.

Would also guarantee us Addinsall as alluded to above.

Still think there is a romance involved in using pick 1, it's good PR as well. Duursma is the best kid in the draft and deserves to be pick 1.

The most balanced sensible post I think I've ever seen you write.🍺

We don't need to win a popularity contest.. to bid at 2 serves no purpose for us.. it's just a publicity stunt. The biggest chance to get one of the Gold coast boys is at one. Duursma or sharp wouldn't care if they get to run out with Patterson for the next 3 years.
I'm not commenting on whether it is the correct strategy, I'm letting you know why everyone is predicating bids with 2. It is simply the most likely outcome. There is no indication that WC intend to lay bids with pick 1 and it would surprise almost everyone if they did. I mean we have just seen absolute studs like Daicos and Ashcroft not bid on until picks 3 or 4 in recent years, most clubs won't do it and I don't see us breaking that trend.

With only 5 spots, the club must think/hope Evans doesn't get a bid

As Williams and Banners are certain to get a bid?

Really would like that 6th list spot to take away the stress of sitting through the back end of the draft hoping a bid doesn’t come for Banfield and Evans

After our first three picks -
• Match a probable Williams bid or decline and take a 4th selection instead
• Match a bid on Evans or Banfield if one comes

As it stands if we match a bid for one of Evans or Banfield we won’t be able to match a bid on the other. With an extra list spot we’d be able to match both should they come
We must be pretty confident one (or both) will not attract bids.

And TBF not too many of the expert rankings have them in the top 50 - and most expect 45-55 picks this year (obviously a very
As much as robey & cdt could be really good.
Sharp is the sensible option.Harley needs help now. not in a few years.in a few years he will be gone ,if still waiting to see change

with dovaston he does have a point of difference in his game that our other small forwards don’t have.

I’m new on here.read comments ,a lot i agree with some , i disagree with. just a question. when you comment are you picking for the now or for future.
Everyone keeps ignoring Duursma as help for Harley.

We aren’t taking him at #1 due to hopes he only reaches his floor (tall winger), we are absolutely expecting him to be a balanced or inside leaning mid in time (dream is Bont style).

I’m not saying Sharp shouldn’t also be very high on our list, but Duursma does address both the ability deficiency and midfield deficiency we have on our list
