It wouldn't surprise to see us make moves on draft night. Someone comes to us because the player they're interested in is still there. I could be wrong and we go for a Doveston, but I think we will sell high.

Over in Melbournes draft thread they seem fairly convinced they’ll take Cumming and or Dovaston

Gettable is saying we tried to trade our first round pick up during trade period.

Good Coast may not have the points to get all of their academy kids if bids come and that may just take 2-3

We tried for one of the gold coast picks but they ended up at Melbourne.

I did a drive by of the Cats board last night, to see a number of comments from sources close to Butters saying he wants to go to them, referencing mates from the Jets he played with and a few others. I think we really need to stop talking about Butters being a given, and focus on the fact it will be a fight.

I can't believe anyone would not think it is anything but a given and is going to be a big challenge, and also that any discussion here has any influence at all in the outcome. Maybe over worrying about the influence of Big Footy forums

part of the Butters discourse here, I think, is a bit of copium about our incredibly underwhelming trade period and list management.

It might be true that we were conservative with our assets to make a Butters deal easy. But if we don’t get Butters it’s a lot of egg on face. We shall see.

there is a lot of time for other vic clubs to make their pitches and things can change.

Landing Butters, a top 5 player in the AFL and at 25 the peak of his career, would be an unprecedented coup for the Bulldogs.

It would however be business as usual for the Cats or Hawks.

So who he goes to (if he actually leaves Port) will tell us a lot about whether clubs like ours can compete with the bigger clubs. We have more going for us in this sortie than just about any recruiting exercise in recent memory. (I don't count the Treloar serendipity ... we weren't even chasing him until Collingwood put a ribbon around him and pushed him out the door).

I still think we are less than 50% chance to get him (maybe about 20-25%?), but at least we're a chance. We are rarely able to say that. If we miss out I'm not going to mind that we end up with a bit of "egg on our face" for having conserved some trading assets. At least we would have given it a crack.

Better that than nothing ever risked, nothing ever gained.

The proposition that Butters is going to make his life altering decision based on our recent trade activities (or lack thereof) old allegiances, The Bont, who he played underage football with or any other of the numerous fantastical fan derived inside info floating about. Is fanciful.

He will go to whomever offers him the best combination of success, Cold Hard Cash and Contra deals.

If we're the ones who can balance that scale. Nice. If we're not then so be it.

Investing anything else into the discussion beyond having a vicarious interest in the decision seems a bit pointless. And a waste of good bodily fluids. This is especially so, given any decision is likely to be 8-9 months away.

The butters deal in principle would be already done. To which club, who knows but I hope it's us.

All the big deals are done about 1 to 2 years in advance, Dangerfield etc. My mate is the accountant to lot of the big names AFL players such as Dangerfield which was completed in principle 2 years out.

Not to be dramatic here but I think getting butters or not getting him obviously is going to play a huge role in the future of our club . Get butters and our flag window opens up for the next 5-6 years would be very stiff not to jag 1 flag within that period . Miss out on him and I hate to say it I can’t see us winning one any time soon

The engine room has always been a point of difference for us and with Bont in the back end of he’s career, libba and treloar probably 1 -2 years at best left sanders probably off to tazzie could send us to the back of the pack again. Few teams around us looking like having nice rebuilds - Richmond , dees even Carlton is setting up nicely if they can draft well. Goldcoast and Brisbane looking very solid. Premierships are hard to come by and think the butters signature is very important for our club. Just my humble opinion here ofcourse

But if we don’t get Butters it’s a lot of egg on face.
People say ‘egg on face’ like it’s a bad thing. In reality, egg on face is usually a result of over-exuberant consumption of delicious eggs.

‘Egg on arse’ would be a better expression.

Eg: Something went horribly wrong, he ended up with egg on his arse.

It will help a lot if the Bulldogs do well in 2026. Missing finals again, when Cats and Hawks are still up there, won't be ideal.

That is just Geelong supporters realising that they now have free reign after they filled AFL house a bit more with another of their own
