Best hawthorn goal of all time

Great thread! Lots of excellent nominations.

For importance - Burgoyne, 2013 PF.
For skill - Cyril and Buddy would each have several nominations.
For sheer absurdity that makes me laugh with joy - Langford 2014 GF.
For drama - Brereton's first goal in the 89 GF. Possibly the best moment I have ever seen on a sporting field.

No other Hawthorn goal epitomizes the Hawthorn way like this one - the Hard way.

Hurdles after hurdle, met with determination and fortitude.

“Teamwork is the thing that talks”

"An unlikely, bulky hero" and "The resistance may be broken!".

Two legendary comments that made a wonderful moment even better!

There was a goal in the 2012 home and away v Collingwood that was a stunning possession chain culminating in a Clinton Young goal on the run. 3rd quarter I think, and for me, it was the moment that signalled we’d become the team to beat.

Commentator at the time described it as like watching the Harlem Globetrotters. The aesthetics were amazing and really showcased that extraordinary team at its peak - the irony being we’d go on to lose the GF that year. But we all know what happened next.
That goal sprung to my mind also. It involved some exquisite football from, Shiels, Rioli, Roughead, Poppy, Mitchell, Rioli (a second time) and finally Young. Too bad there’s no footage available??

The other one worth mentioning was the 11 second end to end goal. guerra, to Stratton, to none other than Buddy, who leapfrogged a player lying on the ground to smash through one from 60.

I'm going to be extremely biased because this happened RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME in the first ever AFL game I attended, but for me it's Paul Hudson from boundary line Round 6, 1992 vs Adelaide at Football Park.

FYI the Brown and Gold flags you see go up just behind the goals is not the cheer squad, that's me and mates from High School (my flag being the Brown/Gold/Brown striped flag). The Channel 7 coverage for most of the night went to us everytime we kicked a goal. :D

Yeah would love it if someone could unearth the footage. Was Jordan Lewis involved as well? I can’t remember.

This isn't the best.

It's not kicked by a Hawthorn legend.

But I was at this game and the place went absolutely bonkers because it came from such an unlikely hero in Jack Fitzpatrick.

This goal + one prior in the goal square from Tom Mitchell I think it was, saved our 2016 ladder position and gave us a chance at a crack at Fourthorn.Jack Fitzpatrick FROM DOWN TOWN

From the modern era only as that's all I really know. It's the Dew/Williams goal in the 08 GF and Burgoyne 13 PF.

In both cases they aren't displays of raw talent or skill, but of grit and determination. Culminations of a team effort under immense pressure on the biggest stages. Symbolically they are both the killing blow against a strong opponent who held a psychological advantage going into the game.

And Buddy's dribble goal in the 11 PF would also be up there given the combination of athleticism, skill and clutchness on display. Even though that was a very tough loss to take at the time, I still remember the game fondly purely because of just how good that goal was.

And one I don't think has been mentioned yet. Roughy's last goal in his final game. A great goal in its own right but also added emotion given Roughy's standing at the club and him overcoming the cancer battle to return to the AFL. And adding to the impressive execution we learned from his biography afterwards that he could barely feel his feet due to the side effects of the cancer treatment.

Fantastic reaction to the thread exactly what I’d hoped for it’s an amazing way to remember everything this club has done for us. As I said not about crowning a winner so much as revelling in joy, a lot of great suggestions and many of the key ones covered, now looking for lesser nominations. I will add 2 to start:

Changa 08 first goal. The pickup from Campbell brown the hard run that Changa was elite at and the finish just lifted my spirit that we may be a chance.

Puopolo for his 5th 2016 against Adelaide in last minute to win 3 games in a row by 3 points each game. We were 15 down with 5 to play and looked gone. Absolute ice in his veins. Also a special mention to his preceding goal long kick out in front no one inside 50. the pumping of those small
Muscle bound legs was something to behold! Highlight of this game on YouTube.

At 2:50 onwards. Insanely good team goal - first quarter of the grand final rematch and we just blew Freo off the park. We were at the peak of our powers of that era - love it.

**** that’s good viewing. The Spangler, Pops, Rioli, Bruest goal. So dispiriting that it comes from defending a certain goal for Freo. Manic pressure my ass

That “did I really just do that?!” look of shock and surprise on Jack’s face was priceless too!

In all seriousness, though, I find it difficult to go past Burgoyne's 2013 preliminary final goal against Geelong. Hawthorn were 20 points down at three-quarter time against a team they had lost a dozen games (or thereabouts) in a row, with a spot in the grand final on the line. I daresay that if Hawthorn had lost again to Geelong, Clarkson would have been given the sack by Kennett. Hawthorn kicked, clawed and scratched their way back into contention in the final quarter, and Burgoyne's goal was the cherry on top, but it was not an individual goal. Gunston and Lewis both played their role in creating the opportunity for Burgoyne to take.

Um, you're forgetting someone.

That Changa goal in 08…never forget it knew we were on what a statement.

Dunstall kicked a great one against the Bulldogs, kicking and tapping the ball to himself before getting around and kicking it on his left foot.

Langford kicked some absolute beauties in the 2014 grand final.

Hodge also kicked an underrated goal where he smothered and gathered the ball right off the boot of his opponent in the centre square, then kicked the goal from outside 50m. Absolutely amazing..!
