AFL Introduces Wild Card Round

I hate it but not sure why all the complaints are here, the AFL know you will all watch. They know that all the sheep will tune in no matter what they do.
They could change the game to use a round ball and you will all watch it.
We the fans are the issue, we accept everything they do and keep tuning in.
Over 100 rule changes in over 15 years, not a peep from the fans. They just keep turning up no matter what the AFL do.

We’re asking 9th and 10th place to have to win 5 away games against better opponents to win the flag. We’re now asking 7th and 8th place to have to win 5 games in a row to win the flag. when the odds are that stacked, what’s the point of their inclusion?

It's supposed to be harder to win the flag the lower you place

I agree. But there comes a point when the odds are so unfavourable their inclusion doesn’t actually make sense.

Good.

Makes coming top 6 worth something

You come 7th-10th it should be near impossible to win

10 does not have the same opportunity as 5th.

Here are the probabilities of the new final-10

1st - 18.75%
2nd - 18.75%
3rd - 18.75%
4th - 18.75%

5th - 6.25%
6th - 6.25%
7th - 3.125%
8th - 3.125%
9th - 3.125%

10th -3.125%

Yes it's true that 10th if they win, doubled their probability from 3.125% to 6.25% (the same as 5th) So friggin what?

Under the final-8, one loss to 1st and win to 8th sees both 1st and 8th on the same mathematical probability in wek two of the finals (12.5%). That's what happens in finals.
I said on the basis of one week.

I think that everyone plays each other once, and then Rounds 18-23 become
A) a round robin tournament for the top 6 to determine seeding for finals
B) a knockout tournament for 7-12 to determine which three teams are seeded 7-9
C) a play-in tournament for 13-18 to determine who gets the 10 seed

We then have the wildcard 7 v 10 and 8 v 9, whilst the top 6 get the week off.

Just think. At round 18, every team is still in the premiership race.
The excitement in Round 17, will 7th jump into the top six and guaranteed finals? Is it better to finish 12th and bank on finishing top 3 knockout or drop to 13th and back yourself to finish top in the play in against inferior opposition?

Carlton finish 9th and Essendon finish 10th in 2027. Imagine the crowd at the ‘G for that and the number of people watching at pubs and homes around the country. Would be massive!

On the contrary a GWS v GC battle wouldn’t be so well attended but probably 90% of footy fans will still watch it on the tele.

It doesn’t need to change. Not one single team that finished 9th or lower has ever deserved to play finals. The top 8 is fine, extending it is senseless nonsense. You don’t need to arbitrarily reward 50% of teams in the competition.
Absolutely this.

Why reward teams who will have roughly a 50% winning record in the season into the finals?
It's not going to make it a better spectacle. Just an extremely average team being served up to be belted.
Genius idea AFL. Why don't we just give everyone a participation while we're at it?

Finishing 10th on the ladder next year will be like having sex with a prostitute.

Sure you technically did it, but you know deep down you didn't really achieve anything.

Can anyone comment on the general reaction to the 15-team AFL competition expanding the finals from 6 to 8 teams in 1994?
I was in my teens at the time and still thought it was idiotic. You want the best teams playing off in the finals. The top 8 is plenty even if we get to 20 teams
