I honestly dont mind it

Provides an opportunity for those younger teams to get a taste of final footy too

And a better reward for finishing top 6

I don't like the idea for a range of reasons and all of them have been already mentioned. Think it's a massive money grab as team rarely win the flag from outside the top 4, plus I'd be pretty pissed if we finish 7th and got knocked out by the team who finished 10th. It also makes it near on impossible for teams to do what the Dogs did in '16 which was great to watch.

In saying that, it should keep the season interesting for longer. Will I be cheering us on if we're sitting 11th in the last round? Without a doubt. Will I be there if we finish 10th and make it to Wildcard Round? Of course, and I'm sure 99% of footy fans will do the same.
Takes me back to 1994 the old final 8 system.. we finished 2nd and played 7th in the first final (Melbourne)... we lost....

If the wildcard round was a thing this year, the Sydney Swans would be able to rest everyone with two two rounds to go if they wanted to. Below 9th by two games plus 38% and above 11th by three games. They’d actually be more primed and rested than 7th lol.

It would be a risky strategy, but someone like Brisbane could do something like this. Just do enough during the season (win most home games for example) to qualify between 7th and 10th. Rest a heap of players during the year and end of the season. Hit finals fresh will a healthy list. Profit.

Obvious reasons..
  • AFL loves $$$$
  • Clubs love $$$$... you could finish 9-10 claim you made finals.. get at least one finals game played where people charged $$$$ to go to the game at the G etc and make more revenue.
  • AFL not liking the pre-final bye where no games are played. They have now 2 games to force-feed everyone that weekend.
  • AFL dislikes that typically by mid-season top 8 is set, this remedies that somewhat.
  • May make it easier to intice players... finishing 10th does mean you're a finals team...

I'm not a fan of this top 10... but you can sure see why clubs and the AFL are.

Fixed.

The AFL media machine also love the footy in the news and this is yet another way they'll do that.

I'm old enough to remember when the top 8 came in and it was a 15 team comp and there was similar outrage to now, just no social media. I didn't like that change then, and I am not really a fan of this now, but I think this finals system with the 10 is better than the original final 8 system.

Also half the sides in the comp were making finals 1995-2010 and everyone just got used to it, and it will be the same now.

Just happened to be down at Moore Park yesterday, plenty of media there. I saw this bloke running around with NO TAPE on him, jumping and galloping like a 2-year-old colt, lasering kicks and picking the ball up, swiveling, yes swiveling as if he has never been injured in his life. When chatting to some swan's support staff, the comment was made, yeah, he feels brand new, just the lifestyle and warmer weather is helping his body, even getting out of bed in the morning and it's only been a month...

The player: Charlie Curnow...

Very easy to look good on day 1 of pre season.

Let's see how he's going come May/July next season when the wear and tear start to get to him.

What do you mean? The AFL is an amateur organisation.
The clubs are professional. The commission is a bunch of rank amateurs who are only interested in their bloated salaries and that phat bonus cheque come the end of the year.
