This idea is inspired a bit by Curry leaving UA recently and starting his own brand, but also by Barcelona exploring a similar option a little while back. Could Collingwood make jumpers under their own brand?

They'd need to find a good manufacturer to make their on field stuff, but for everything else, would it be viable for them to cut out the apparel brand and make it on their own? I'm not sure if brands give teams money to make their kit, or if it's more of a partnership and the club just gets % of sales revenue. If they didn't have to deal with a big name brand, maybe could be worth it. Nike stuff seems to have a reputation for being bad anyways, and isn't normally ready until much later than other clubs stuff. I'd say Collingwood is the only club big enough to do something like this.

Isn't that what they tried to do with Star? i remember hearing something like that but i could be wrong

it really is the same shit each season, only changes are really the sponsors. Where is the creativity?
Feels like clubs are only willing to do throwbacks now. I can't remember the last guernsey that felt like an actual step forward design-wise.

I think Star was where they landed when they wanted specialised football jumpers for the club, I think they did investigate at the time doing their own appareal but the costs of it was too great so they signed with Star.

That’s exactly what Star was.

The chat was that all the players would have curated cuts and there’d be revolutionary materials and the club would make all the money from merchandise - it’d revolutionise sporting club apparel.

But then Collingwood were just buying the jumpers from Asia. Someone on here found them available on a Chinese shopfront for 10 bucks and they were exactly the same.

And merchandise sales didn’t do anything remarkable because the designs weren’t very good and the brand had no currency or appeal.

you severely underestimate the appeal and prestige of brands like Adidas and Nike etc.

Thanks. It was just a suggestion given the AFL is a small market that Nike and particularly Adidas don't care too much about. It's not like heaps of other teams supporters are going to buy Collingwood merch because it's made by Adidas, is it?

I am saying I would buy Collingwood merch because its made by Adidas and Nike, if it was made by Kookaburra for example I would not

It’s actually staggering that clubs still aren’t willing to shake things up, even with their away kits. There’s a huge opportunity for revenue here, yet it's like their cool with the idea that one guernsey should last a decade.

Meanwhile, clubs in the Premier League, NFL, and NBA take bold design risks every single year and guess what? Supporters buy the new kits every single season and it's a huge money maker for them.

Sure, clubs are doing more one offs but it's really not the same. We want more cult classic main kits.

Yeah people are buying cars every 5 years because they're not built to last anymore. I've got a 1997 VS Commodore as my daily with over 350,000ks on it and it feels brand new. These new Chinese cars only last a few years.
my 2007 hilux has 400,000ks and runs brand new as well

If the 90s and 2000s were the era of experimenting with new designs and being a bit creative, the 2020s are shaping up as the era of playing it safe.

The saints have had some really great guernseys in recent years but even those have mostly just been recycled designs from the 90s/2000s.

so you're happy with the exact same guernseys every single year, with the exception of a minor collar or sponsor change? LOL
He said clubs are doing one offs but he wants change to main kits.

Yeah I’m perfectly fine with traditional, main kits being perfected and only changed for sponsors etc. One offs, Gather Round, clash jumpers, go for your life.

But at a time where the AFL is seemingly open to selling out nearly every facet of the game for a buck, damn right I want main kits to stay the same. There’s not much else that doesn’t change.

And my main issue was not what he wanted, everyone likes different shit. It was that he stated it’s what “we” want.

I think this is one of the advantages that the Lions have over more traditional clubs.

The home kit has largely stayed the same over the journey, but introduction of a red kit to the mix, and then a dedicated clash kit has really done some awesome things. The 2024 gold Lion clash was my favourite of our clashes, but at least they have tried to do something unique-ish every few years.

Unironically would've been a cool design if they had it from the start of the rebrand
100%, this is more so where I'm getting at. Like their whole marketing ploy with the rebrand was going simple to symbolise focusing on winning no frills football, and I just think they should have gone all the way with it in plain red and it would have been a more understandable sell. Because in my opinion wavy two tone heat wave side panels or whatever they want to call them isn't my definition of simple and no frills.

afl fans are incredibly conservative when it comes to guernsey designs. look at all the people who complain that 'oh we only wore white shorts back in the days and that was fine!' every time a team releases a new clash
Not just AFL fans, Australian culture in general. Who would want to be the person to design a guernsey for Essendon that isn’t a red sash (last year first time it was anything other than a red sash, and it was black!), or a Carlton guernsey that isn’t more or less the monogram on a plain background. You’d be crucified by people regardless of if it’s good or not.

Preseason used to see some creativity, but there isn’t even a preseason comp anymore.
