How dare we recruit a 211cm premiership player as a back up ruck for virtually nothing.

Max Gawn or GTFO! Am I right?

And he's American. Can't stand the yanks. Plus the incessant media keep yapping on about how we need to invest more money into our ruck stocks. When will we listen? This club is a joke. We should have traded for TDK. šŸ˜

Please, please, please, for the love of all that is purple and holy…

NO ****ING ā€˜U.S.A’ CHANT.

I swear I will chunder all over the poor sods sitting in the row in front of me. 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
If we win the Flag and there is a picture of Mason Cox holding up the Cup in a Freo jersey

I can see the headline already

Did I read somewhere he’s a naturalised Australian now?

Yep, mid-2022.

Some quotes from the day, apropos notions of him being a person of less than good character.

"It's quite emotional," Cox said as one of 110 people who made the pledge of commitment and received their Australian citizenship at the MCG on Wednesday.

"It's been eight years to get here and it's been quite a journey along the way."

Now, the 31-year-old plans to spend the rest of his life here.

"(It's about) opportunity, just like a lot of people here," Cox said.

"We've got some amazing people that are refugees from different countries who have a lot better stories than I do."

"There's a lot of people that are willing to reach out and help each other and that's something I've definitely noticed in my time here, and I'm very proud to be a part of it."

Good luck to him

Not sure if the signing will work out for us and if he does comes across as a flog i am not sure i just haven't followed him closely enough.

But he moved here with no experience of playing AFL and not sure how much he would have seen back in the USA.

The fact he has broken through and played over 130 games, played in 2 GFs and won a premiership is no mean feat.

Like coaches don't hand out games to people for a novelty factor.

He broke through and succeeded

Low risk, high potential.

Everyone complained that Reidy wasn't AFL standard when he got a game, and don't begrudge him if Carlton want to offer him more money and a starting spot.

If Darcy or Jackson get injured, reasonable backup option that doesn't force either Riddle to play if not ready or force JL to play Treacy or Voss as backup ruck.

Why not? It would be fun!

The while thing started when Cox tore my club a new one in the 2018 finals series. I just had to shake my head and laugh.

I don’t think anyone had any issues with offloading Reidy. He never showed himself to be AFL std and Freo clearly did not rate. Happy to have him play at Peel and 1 game per year. In that one game he was so poor he was moved forward and LJ got the game moving in our favour until he got tired in the last quarter with the ball control Geelong had.

The issue I, and many others have is age. He turns 35 before the season starts. For 1 year cover I’m ok. I’m concerned at 36 he won’t be useful at all. I can’t think of too many if any players of that age running around at Peel or in the WAFL.

The call on him being part of committed three tall forward line structure is likely not a big factor in his recruitment. It is purely back up ruck that can play forward.

Every chance Freo bring in McDonald to play forward and rotate ruck along with Voss before Cox gets a game.

So many posts over the years where we all laughed at this fraud and what a ****in loud mouth pillock he was and yet here we are, again, now saying it’s okay just because he’s on the list.

I get Reidy leaving for better opportunities but getting this bozo in is disgraceful.

He is absolutely rubbish, one good game seven years ago doesn’t mean a thing.

Hes also massively self serving and seemingly more interested in his post football career rather than actually caring about being a footballer.

This is driving me nuts, if you thought I’d lost it over the Bolton trade then I’ve truly done it now.

This club is something else.
What a crap post. Obviously you know nothing about Aussie rule. Either that or a sour make believe supporter.
No, Reidy didn't leave, he was delisted. Why! Because he was / is NFnG..
He is at best WAFL level.
You write drivel. Do you do that to draw the ire of BF followers!

I believe this poster is formerly "Silent Alarm", who had a history of trolling/"bad behaviour" (whatever that means) - whom you would know from your lengthy amount of time having been here. Winding up posters, craping on the club, clickbaiting people - being a general bum-headed drosspot....and the fun list goes on and on.

People like this want you to take the bait, and you did. My advice, if worth anything is to recognise 'crap' for what you feel it is and move along. Let it fester in its own steaming pile of existential poopery. When anyone filters out the negativity (ANY negativity..), things become a 1000 times better :)

I know, just shits me that there are numb skulls out there that constantly write crap articles when they know SFA about anything.
Sour or just uneducated in our game.
Maybe a Yellas supporter.

Potentially a 35/36 year old who has played 130 games and doesn't have the same 'miles on the clock' as 300 gamer.

Would also suggest out of all the positions, age is less of a factor for a ruck. Not like pace or reaction time is a factor. Anyway, hopefully only a break glass in case of emergency player.

It's just white noise mate. Background buffoonery. It can only affect you if you let it, best to keep zipping on by in your own lane, make your own journey exciting, and sod what the other cars are doing ;)

I recon we will still use Voss as a pinch hitter if one of Darcy or Jackson are injured. Being a competitive beast is great for the centre square and I'd rather see Voss rattling some cages than bringing in another tall. If both go down, then Cox gets a run with Voss pinch hitting. If we also have a tall forward injured, McDonald can come in and play the pinch hit role too.

Yeah the ā€œmeltingā€ or whatever you want to call it is absolutely mystifying to me from a purely football/list perspective-

For a start he’ll be lucky to play a game but if he does he gives us something of a known INSURANCE!(posters bemoaning Reidy not being ready when injuries hit in23’ are now basically whinging why we just didn’t recruit a teakle or Boyd who are basically Reidy mk 2!??-oh and don’t give me ā€œchance to improve garbage both those options have been previously delisted by clubs , teakle twice!!- they ain’t getting any better ffs!!
And don’t say ā€œdraft a young ruck then - Thats exactly what the clubs already down with riddle!!

I mean Do people understand where our list is at?

go through the pros :

-gives riddle time to develop and LEARN on the job from an experienced premiership ruck
- would be on minimum cash
-I’d imagine will actually be somewhat of a draw card for our Peel games
- provides a different perspective and experience: not just coming from a successful club but just his football journey experience all up , basically took up the game off no experience (and learnt quickly)and has carved out a decent career at the highest level- you d be pretty naive to think he wouldnt have some valuable lessons to part with on our younger players(even experienced ones)

Cons- with his age he deteriorates quickly… meh ,again, the guy he’s replacing was almost never picked EVEN when we had multiple injuries …aka he’s replacing a guy who basically never played for us!!

But hey I gather the biggest reason is simply posters inherent bias towards the bloke/ the shit they’re/going to cop off other supporters for Freo giving him a list spot, so in that case continue to melt away over our 42nd player on our list of ….42 players!!

100%. There's clearly limited upside but almost no downside unless, as you point out, we think we could turn a twice delisted younger ruck into something other than delist material.
Cox is plug and play. The exact kind of depth player a team in contention should target.

I doubt anyone thinks its a genius recruitment move. It just fits an unlikely purpose for a short time.

EDIT: what fnerd just said.

I’m in agreeance with Fnerd post. My issue is him getting 2 years at age 35. Why not give him 1 year and then see where things go. His management can’t be flipping us the bird saying 2 years or get stuffed. They have no other suitors that I’m aware of. But it is what it is. I’m happy to move forward and certainly for next year he is a massive upgrade on the 2023-25 output of Liam Reidy.

I think they very much would be saying at least 2 years or he retires. Cox is a very competent speaker and would have options outside of football (the USA-AFL pipeline may become an option).

Joel Hamling got overs from a contract length.

Missing the biggest Con: American

Two years because he's moving his whole life across the country for a relatively small salary and its the decent thing for us to do? It couldn't be anything else, surely.

I am… surprised, but I don’t mind it. Cox is handy-ish, not a complete spud, and as a cheap backup option, I don’t mind it at all.

From what I have seen of him, he’s a bit of a campaigner (but I can sympathise with that, being utterly one-eyed), and he doesn’t seem a bad bloke off the field.

Missing the biggest Con: American
I assume you're being facetious..?

We've got at least one American that posts on here regularly and loves Freo as much as the rest of us.

I get disliking someone because they're a flog or a criminal but basing it on their nationality is just shit. People should do better.

I literally see no downside to bringing him in.

Experienced, big bodied ruck who will serve as a great depth player if Jackson or Darcy get injured, or even as a third option tall if any of Treacy/Amiss/Voss get injured. Plus he seems to be a genuinely good dude, which is always good for morale in the locker room.

And we got him for nothing.

I like this.
