Couldn't figure out if it was the mum or the mrs initially. Respect either way.

Annoying now they got what they wanted, might not be annoying down the track when he ends up a bust, hopefully.

Hope so, but damn I'm still fuming lol
Still don't think Robey will be a bust like others are saying to make themselves feel better. He might not be a superstar but he will make Essendon a better side.

Happy with cumming

Very nervous about Grilj….wait and see

Would have liked XT/sully

Let’s see how this pans out

Hawks wanted Grlj bad, they are a side good at spotting talent, Essendon not so much looking at their track record so that's how I'm looking at the Grlj pick.

Robey will be a great forward along side Caddy, he wont make it as a mid at AFL level and this is the very reason we didnt take him and the Bombers did

My instant reaction last night was that Grlj was a reach. Not that that's a bad thing.
Im just surprised we didn't trade with Essendon to get the pick they got from Carlton.
I don't think Essendon or Melbourne would have taken Grlj.
Essendon clearly had Farrow as a priority as they risked Sharp being picked up by Melbourne who had just lost Petracca and Oliver.
Essendon probably got wind of that late invite to Latrelle Pickett and took the gamble that it was because Melbourne wanted him. Helps hold Kozzie to his contract having family with him at the club.

We could have done pick 8 for 13 and a F2 while still getting our man. Obviously there's no way of knowing whether or not Essendon was offering that but I wouldn't be surprised if they were due to their openly public ambition to move up the order.
Michaels in your interview with Giesch, can you ask a question around this? Did the team have concerns that Essendon or Melbourne would have taken Grlj? Were the trade offers for pick 7 instead of 8 and we didn't want to risk losing Cumming or the ability to bid on Patterson and Annabele?

I'd be super interested to hear a story around that.

Essendon wouldn't have done a trade - it would make zero sense from their side.

'Hey, we'll trade you our pick so you can get the player you want because otherwise we'll get him, even though if we were going to get him we wouldn't be offering you our pick.'

Has noone studied game theory!?!

Clearly this was attempted and Essendon made (the right) call that we'd pass and they'd get him all the same

I think people got fooled by the Robey hype. The ground-swell spilled onto the boards, then the media embraced it and then many people thought it was a lock, including Cal Twomey (who if you didn't think was a wannabe expert dependent upon Club whispers, you do now!).

Robey could be a great player but he could be average too. He's seems slow and lumbering to me, too much like Hopper. The game is moving away from players such as these which is also why we didn't take Sharp. Speed and ball movement in the key.

This draft we chose our players based off need rather than best available. What a luxury! To have the confidence in our last years draft crop to look to add players that compliment them.

Our future midfield is not one dimensional like our current one (or what Essendon appears to be creating). It has an inside bull with pace (Smilie :praying: ), a inside/outside mid (Cummings), an elusive play-maker (Hotton), a silky star (Lalor) and a outside speedster (Gryll). All of them can rotate through the midfield and all of them add different component, can rotate through multiple positions and are quality ball users.

We could have got Robey/Sharp but we did not want to become a team of only inside ball winners. We needed diversity and players that compliment each other.

It makes for an exciting future.

Richmond would’ve definitely waited for that. Dons and Dees held their nerve.

I've studied game theory.
Essendon had an unbelievable night to be fair to them. They made all the right calls and all the right gambles.
I was just surprised that even if our bluff on Robey was relatively obvious, it was still a risk for Essendon to potentially miss on him. Maybe they were okay to risk it as they could always fall back on Xavier Taylor, Farrow and Sharp.
The whole industry knew they wanted Robey.

Dodoro would have bitten.

yeah, same, G will fine, a good soldier for the club, but just a bit of an empty feeling after going through the death ride all year to get the extra high pick.

you really want a sky's-the-limit potential player at 4. meanwhile, efc fans will be having an absolute belter of a night, on our's and Dee's behalf.

If we wanted a Grijl-type, we could have traded down. If the trade wasn't there, you change your plans.
Rubbish we rated gryl top 5 from everyone including academy players.
U dont pass up a chance to nab a guy whom tested elite and is best combine tested player for 2 years with performance behind him.

The board laughed when i said Robey wasn't a good fit. The game is leaving the big lumbering types like Cripps and Bont. Even Rowell has speed out of the contest and sheer running power. Game moves too quick now. I like the picks in Cumming and the Sizzler. They will compliment Lalor/Hotton nicely.
Saying the game has gone past players like Cripps & Bontempelli is a bit of a stretch.
Just look at how well Langford played last year

Was the reason we didnt pick robey was speed? How slow is he
He's not slow. Takes a bit to wind up but when he does he's quick.

With Lalor and Smillie similar types we probably saw it as overcapitalising in one area at the expense of a much greater need ('from the gun' speed and agility combined with all-day endurance).
