Good to see he had a jumper at his house in preparation.

18 year-old Banfield told The West Australian he was delighted to land at the Saints with pick 41 after he had conversations with them during a nervy pre-draft period and said his father was as excited as he was.

“He was just over the moon for me to have the opportunity to play AFL football and the work that I’ve put in,” he said. “He was super excited as a dad for that to work out for me, because that’s been a lifelong dream for myself. “It is a very nerve-wracking couple of weeks after the combine. Once you get that done, it’s out of your control.

“I had the mindset, if I can just control what I can control now, it’s up to the clubs whether they want to get me on the list. I did everything I could so to get to this moment, I’m over the moon.

“My dad helped me throughout that. It was definitely a process that I’ve learned from and it was definitely not easy, but I worked my way through it.”

“I definitely was on the Eagles radar and they had the chance to sort of pick me up but it’s each their own,” Banfield said.

“They’ve watched enough footy of me and I guess if they saw better possibilities, that’s how it works out. I’m overjoyed to join the Saints, a great club and I feel like I could fit in there really well.”

Bit of a dig at the Eagles there. You love to see it

Can someone explain the Weagles draft blunder here to me? They didn’t have a spot left for a father-son and hoped he would just fall through to the rookie draft?
AFAIK they didn't have another spot available to them on their senior list and as you said were hoping he would last to the rookie draft.

I think it'll be great for him to get out of the perth goldfish bowl and cut his teeth as his own man, not smothered in a town where most citizens worship his dad.

He's got Ryan, Boxy, Collard, Carroll, Henry, and Hill for a bit of sandgroper company, plus Enright who's originally from WA.
Enright is actually from Kimba - SA west coast

Eagles fans are particularly sour about the fact that Jamie Cripps and Harry Barnett weren’t delisted or moved across to the rookie list to give them the chance to at least choose if they want to match.

Cripps they see as being at the end of a career and fading fast. Barnett many think is just not up to it after failing to shine at WAFL level.

They are basically accusing their list management team of being weak and/or incompetent for not gaming out this exact scenario pre draft, and taking the necessary steps to work around it.

It is a particularly compelling concern when you consider how ruthless St Kilda had to be in order to open up list spots.

None of this means Banfield makes it as a best 23 player of course. Or that he doesn’t have a go home risk attached to him, even if he does.

But it would be like us missing out on Joey Montagna’s son (I don’t know if he even has one) whose last competitive game was a BOG in a colts GF because our list management team didn’t ensure we had enough list spots. It would hit right in the heart, and the sack SOS calls would be deafening.

Oh the delicious irony if it was that scenario with Cripps. We drafted 2 WA boys at the 2010 draft. Both didn't want to be in Victoria. One left at the first opportunity (Cripps) and the 2nd was a complete dud (Ledger) on and off the field so no great loss.

Roll around 13 years later and we have 3 WA boys drafted in the past 3 years under the noses of the Weagles. Hopefully that karma bus is rolling our way for a change!

The Eagles list management has been atrocious in the last few years. They remind me of us under Trout. Poor draft choices and poor list management. They'll be doing a lot of heavy lifting while Tassie strip the draft out. Compare it to the Tigers who have done an incredible regeneration job from a similar position.

I was sitting with an Eagles supporter last night.
The other thing they could have done is not drafted Allen - sure, they had 3 Top 20 picks - they needed to pick here, but knowing they may have had multiple NGA and FS prospects being bid on, and may or may not have wanted flexibility to match, they could have traded out of that pick.

That’ll be the last time he ever has to wear a cheap Bali knockoff

Nothing but pure Fiji swag from here on!

Didn't see this pick coming but damn, it's actually a pretty hot move.

Him being tight with Box is a win for the vibes in the rooms. Can see them getting some "Bash Bros" energy supporting Naz, Pou, Flanders etc

Eagles fans also questioning the prudence of trading away to Hawthorn the future second we gave them for Liam Ryan, just to move up one spot and make 2 bids on suns academy players that ultimately got matched. If they calculated that moving up the one spot meant that the Suns wouldn't have enough points to match both, they were grossly mistaken. That's not even trade craft...it's just math.

We are all shouting at the AFL about how the Suns have been able to feast at this draft even after bringing in Petracca and Ugle-Hagen. But you have to tip your hat to their list management team, they lined up all their ducks, made some shrewd pick trades on the night, and ensured they had sufficient spots and draft points to fend off the bids.

Is it hard to make trades for picks that increase your bidding potential?

It shouldn't be hard to find a club willing to give you two shit picks for one good one.

Right now it looks like the next 5 years belong to the Queensland clubs unfortunately.

Sorry, that's just basic maths and strategy. The problem is that the mechanisms shouldn't exist to allow them to plunder the first round of the draft every year!!

They exploited the loopholes the AFL still left available - the ability to use multiple picks and the ability to trade in surplus picks during the draft. Close those loopholes and they're lucky to land their top 2 academy kids. AFL won't though

Sounds a bit salty towards West Coast. Good lad

192 cm strong overhead, excellent running ability (6.08 2KM time trial) doesn't mind a goal - looks like a candidate for replacing Mason Wood on the wing?

He's spent however much time in their system, was nominated by them and then watched them pick 5 other kids and then leave him hanging until the rookie draft to get there. Fair enough
