Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

If he has got a big ego (and I am not saying that he does) I hope that Sam tells him the cautionary Tale Of Mitch Thorp. If Greeves doesn't shape up, he'll be gone in 1/3 of the time that Thorp lasted

Whether the slide was due to:
  • lack of pace
  • lack of defensive running
  • attitude
  • off-field shenanigans

I hope the last 3 days has been a massive kick in the nuts and it helps shape him as a man. Go take your opportunity young man
This is everything I would have wanted to say.

MVP for VIC and 2nd in the Lark medal got Greeves a rookie spot at the Hawks after 18 clubs chose not to select him 60+ times.

We know he has the talent, but can he increase his endurance from a 2km 6:47.

I am delighted we picked up Greeves as a rookie.

Regarding his athleticism, I see similarities to Cripps and Smilie.
Although Greeves looks bigger/heavier than both.

If Greeves can put some work into managing his weight similar to J. Lewis, and comes through a pre-season looking like this version of himself (17 y.o.) then i think we have an elite prospect with the discipline to get results.

Also, regarding his pace:
Just going to leave this here... from pre-season

Greeves
20m: 3.10s
Agility: 8.24s

Sharp
20m: 3.12s
Agility: 8.75s

If this is true, I think Greeves will only get better with AFL level conditioning and weight management.
His stoppage work is incredible, and he is a very powerful presence in every contest.

PLAYING STYLE
I see a Wayne Carey style of CHF who has been forced to play midfield because of the modern game.
Obv. not the same level of talent or forward craft, but it's where he is suited most IMO.
Look at his leap up to the ball in marking contests and leads.
His timing is beautiful to watch and he has decent hands.

Greeves happens to have the talent to also be an elite inside midfielder too, which is where the modern game has forced him to prove himseld, but I think he should play him 50:50 mid/fwd.

Rgarding his size vs U18.
I think he would also monster most of the AFL tbh.
Senior players are better conditioned, and generally stronger, but not necessarily bigger.

Greeves is just a big lad and will become a big powerful senior player doing the same things he's been doing at U18 level.

The only questions IMO:
1. Does he have the discipline and work ethic to get the most out of himself.
2. Will we profile his attributes and position/s correctly to make the most of his talents?

I expect him to dominate early rounds in the VFL and push hard for a debut.
The guy is not lacking anything for the type of player he is: a big, brutish, dominant inside mid/forward.
You can't expect such a player to also be good on the spread etc

I can see him playing quite a few games next season if 1 & 2 from above go well for us, and him.
Bargain!!!

It's not often you say a draftee needs to lose weight, but I think losing a few kg's would allow him to cover the ground better.

From his highlights, the athleticism (agility, endurance, acceleration, pace, etc) of AFL will be Ollie's biggest challenge.
Thought exactly the same thing. Looks to still be carrying puppy fat.
Would love to know his weight, he is a lump of a kid.
Hopefully applies himself to pre-season and becomes a player for us.

Jordan Lewis wasn't that fast from memory, and he slimmed down and went ok.
This kid has a very long way to go to be compared to Jordan Lewis.

If he can put in the effort that Lewis did every week, he will have his lick of the icecream as well.

leaving to one side that nobody would comapre a newly drafted player's abilities to a retired, legendary a 4-time premiership player, the body transformation is a good analog here.

Also, if we want to compare like for like, Greeves' U18 form is as good as anybody's.
35 disposals and 4 goals in a prelim final.
The kid can play.

I'm excited that we got him. Sounds like he was a stellar performer at the level, and has potential. The optimism is tempered by the fact that - and I hope someone proves me wrong - I don't recall any highly rated juniors who have slipped in this way turn it around and go on to dominate. They normally slide for a very good reason.

Very interested to see where it ends up. Would love to know the true story of why he went so late one day. Hopefully after he wins his first Norm Smith.

Will be interesting where the club sees him playing. He's got a skillset and body type that could play across most lines. I've seen some of his running data. He doesn't test slow. Doesn't test quick either, but certainly not bottom 30 percentile slow which is when alarm bells start going off.

Let's see how he goes in a professional system and if he can rise to that level of sustained work. Go well Oli, wouldn't be the first kid I've seen get a little wake up call and use it to have a great career.

If you're not quick you need to be fit. It's a good thing he is already quite bulky, will be easy for him to get fit as he doesn't have the added goal of needing to stack on weight at the same time
He ran a 6.40 for the 2km.
It's not top shelf, but he's no slouch.

Super talent. It's a great pick.

Ollie has proven to be a talented footballer over his junior career, so to get him to the club with a rookie selection was a bargain. No doubt their are some deficiencies in his game, which he will have to work on, but if he's prepared to knuckle down and put in the work, he has every chance to succeed.

What a rookie pick, bruest and Ginny have shown the rookie draft is pretty important…

His a massive kid, reckon he will pick up some pace once the conditioning is their but his sheer size means he would not be out of place to play senior footy from day one.

Suprised we didn’t take a second rookie

I needed an interview. And an interview i got

Basketball background :thumbsu:

Ryder Cheeseman available for an SSP spot?

Edit: Born a couple of decades too late I reckon. There was a time when Collingwood was drafting names like Tyson Goldsack, Steele Sidebottom, Tim Broomhead. Ryder Cheeseman would’ve been a natural fit.
