The best captain of the last few decades (probably) decided Morne Morkel should do it in his stead when he broke his hand at the SCG 16 years ago.

Only lasted 2 balls, of course, so wasn’t successful.

Tim Lane brought up the example of Kerry O'Keefe opening in the 2nd innings of the Centenary Test after Rick McCosker suffered that horrific blow to the jaw.

It worked ok, I think KO'K scored 14 and the opening partnership put on 30 odd. Mind you, he was more than a handy batsman, averaging mid-20s in f-c and Test cricket.

Well that is up for debate, we will find out next Summer when the Black Caps play a test series over here, I fancy our chances.
