They have shown in the past that they have been able to dial it back while still staying aggressive.

Last Ashes a good example. Stopped trying to hit boundaries the entire time and piled on the runs. For some reason they jump back to overtly aggressive after it has shown to work by being slightly less frantic

Maybe the pressure should be put on coach McCullum?

Of course it was better. Those going on about Head's innings....yes it was good....but Gilly's was much better. What you'll find is that far too many people on here have a poor feel for cricket.
Gilchrist's innings was great but it was against a team who lost 5-0, probably the most embarrassing performance by any cricket team that's travelled here in history

These guys might top it sure, but in the context of this test it's a pretty amazing innings

Gilchrist also never made a hundred when one of our 1-6 batters didn't also make a hundred (I think... heard this mentioned once)

Head seems to be able to do it when others aren't

Was it Bazball though? Those 4 wickets in 19 balls was all good bowling.

They’ll cop it from a lot of corners for ‘trying to smash everything and score at 7 an over’ or whatever.

The bottom line is it hasn’t been a case of them trying to smash the ball all over the place for the most part - Crawley’s wild first over drive and some of the tail-end wickets excepted.
It’s just been ‘loose’ shots that you either don’t play at all, or you play with some proper conviction and a bit of foot movement if you’re going to play them. Doesn’t have to be textbook; few players are. Just get it a bit closer to the line. They had concrete boots on with those three shots today.

And absolutely some very good bowling. The first innings bowling from Australia wasn’t overly spectacular aside from a bit of Starc. Thought today they were much better.

Just look at how they have bowled this innings.
Absolutely panicked and gone short for no reason

What was the last time an Australian scored a test century in Australia when opening?
Warner in the first Test of the Pakistan tour in 2023/2024.
